Default webra 1.45

Does anyone have this engine mounted in a pattern plane?

I'm new at this so these questions may seem elementary to most of you...

I just got Webra 1.45 that I intend to put in a Typhoon 2000. I'm having trouble coming up with a mounting system for it. I intended to use the home-brew Piedmont soft mount system,

http://piedmontmodels.com/dave_brown..._made_soft.htm

but it comes up about 1/2" short of the front of the cowl. I could build a stand-off of some type or a box. However, several people have advised against this mount. Anyone have experience using this?

A Hyde-type mount seems like it may be overkill for a two stroke engine, but I am considering it. I'm also considering a Dave Brown Vibradamp.

The nose ring is another problem. I have a Gator RC nose ring, but it won't fit over the thrust washer. Do nose rings come in different sizes? If so, who has them? Is one even necessary with a soft mounted 2 stroke engine?

Thank you for any advice you can offer.

Dave

Default Nose ring

I'm about to mount mine into my new Temptation. I too noticed the difficulty with the tightness of the nose ring. I took out the rubber and sanded the fiber out a little to that made it fit great. I don't understand why your having a problem fitting the engine unless you already glued in the firewall. I'm thinking the way to mount it is too secure the engine to the mount, then put the engine into the plane with your spinner backplate attached, before the firewall is in. Now come from behind and carefully fit your firewall so it is snug against the back of the mount and it fits like a glove around the inside of the fuse. Its not easy to get it snug but my freinds are so good at it that they only use thick CA to glue it in. Its important that you do it this way to assure that that the spinner is fitting into the front properly. The fuse is molded with the proper thrust offsets. Allow around a 1/16" gap between the nose front and the spinner by tack gluing a balsa ring to it during the fitting procedure. Now mark off the holes where your mount must bolt onto the firewall. Take everything out and drill your mount, attach your blindnuts drill your needed holes and put it back together and then glue in the firewall. Sound right to you?
Another guy in our pattern club is attempting to do the Piedmont/brown mount. I use these mounts that are Hyde knockoffs that we get for around $40. They work very well. I did the mount your doing on 2 sport planes I built last year and they too will work I just don't think they will last. Good luck. Mike

Thanks for the reply, Mike.

I should have mentioned that I did make a dumb mistake and glued the firewall in per the plans before I fitted the engine. I could have saved myself a lot of headaches if I had thought ahead. I should have known better.

Ripping out and reinstalling the firewall is an option. I'm building an all wood version so it is possible, although messy.

Thanks again, Dave

Default NOSE RINGS

Most Hyde type soft mounts rquire a nose ring. If you get any kind of osilation with a nose mount you should nose ring it.
I have made my own nose rings. Use 1/8 ac ply and split med. fuel tubing for the insulator.

Default and another one from the front

Homemade nose ring.

When sizing the hole just use your dremel sanding drum a little at a time till there is a snug fit. A little silicon on the tubing makes it slide on easier. Easy to replace the tubing when needed and no need to special order a nose ring. Fuel tubing is in my tool box. I replace the tubing about once a season so far.

I run the 1.45 Bully's and to install the engine you remove the thrust washer. The nose ring fits the front of the engine tight but it does fit. I think the two engines are very similar.

I don't know that the home brew mount I devised would work with stand-offs. The neoprene well nuts secure the mount by grasping the backside of the firewall, so your stand-offs would likely be too thick for the grip range of the nuts.

A good option if you don't feel like messing with a nose ring is the Hyde "A" mount, that works without a nose ring. It's a bit heavy if you can afford a couple of oz weight penalty. I like it better than the Hyde ARI mounts with integrated nose ring, plus it's a less expensive.

Thanks for the reply, Lee.

I realize I can't use standoffs with your mount. What I was thinking of was mounting it to a box attached to the firewall. I might also have to relieve the firewall to accommodate the well nuts. I'm still considering other options too. Not sure what I will use yet.

I'm a new to pattern and am just learning how to install an engine in a pattern plane. Soft mounts and nose-rings are new to me. I now realize that I just have to remove the thrust washer to install the nose ring. The Gator will probably fit.

I'll get it eventually. I always do!

Thanks again for the reply. I'm really looking forward to running the engine and flying this plane.
