Hey I hear ya on the scale aspect. When I first got into warbirds, I swore to myself that I'd fly them on the scale prop. I quickly came to realize that this is a tough proposition evenfor electrics, and the fact is that I love speed on my birds, even if they are going 700mph scale! I had a ".50" CMP Mustang that I bashed a 4-bladed prop for out of 2 Zingers and it came out great. But at 14x8, it was lethargic and still pulled a ton of amps (65A) on a power 46 size motor. Definitely not ideal.

But I haven't given up. This one will remain as is, but I have other builds, including a 72.5 ESM Spit and 2 Sea Furies,that will be getting proper 4- and 5 bladed props. The key is to select a high amp motor like the geared Neus and Hackers, or a Scorpion outrunner and vary the cell count to suit the prop. I have a Scorpion 5525-195 (their F3A motor) for the ESM Spit and it can accomodate an 18x16 on high cell count or a 5-blade 18x16 for scale speed. That's the theory anyway!

"Jet Mang" on the other forum has video of a Thunder Tiger Sea Fury running a 5-blade 16x14 prop from Zinger with a Neu 15151Y and 6.7 gearbox. Goes fast and sounds marvelous. No sound module needed!

First of all "Welcome" to all the new brothers. It's great to see the squadron grow.

Just a quick update on my Hangar 9 Spitfire 60 build.

The topflite cockpit had to be modified quite a bit, but I was able to get it installed
and looking half decent.
I threw out my idea of copper machine gun barrels and opted for a plastic straw.
I drilled 1/4" depth holes into the leading edge and epoxied 1/2" length straw cuts into the holes.
Then I cut and sanded down the protruding straw plastic to the leading edge.
I then reamed out the dried epoxy to about 1/8" depth and painted the holes black.
Way less weight this way.
I have to get some red covering squares to put around the machine gun holes yet and it should
look a.o.k. I hope.
The canopy has not been fully fastened as I am looking for a pilot figure yet.
After that it's going to be the robo strut 650 install, weathering and the topflite matt clear.

Somepics showing the installation on my WM Spitty. The clear canopy cut-out template is perfect for showing what things look like inside! Sorry, I used my i-phone. The stock setup calls for split elevators operated by heavy and flexy 2/56 rod inside guides, so that's 3 total. I ditched all this for light and much stiffer carbon rods. Saved me almost 7oz. nose weight if my calcs are correct. Airframe mods include cutting out the hatch, setting up the batteryarea,and gussetting everything up front with triangle stock.

I only have one flight so far. I have the planes here, but my friend lives in Texas. We were able to put it up one evening before dark. The flight was only about 5 minutes long due to the lack of light, but the battery voltage was still full after about 7 total minutes of run time. Typically I try to fly at what appears to be a scale speed with my Warbirds, and this plane did that with about ½ power. It appeared to have pulling power considering the output power was close to a DLE-20. Did not try vertical, but I am sure if I were to prop it as TTRotary said it would scream.

Your Spit is looking very good. I do like your gun holes in the wings. What are you going to use for the gun barrel??
Please keep the pictures coming. I may have to pick up another H9 Spit and do some mod to her. I know some people say that you can not make a ARF look good, but looking at yours, yes you can!!!

you won't see gun barrels on spits, at least in the pics of the real deal I've seen. you will see the canon barrels though.

thanks for the additional info. I have a TF P47 60 arf that I've been thinking about converting to electric. I have a SAITO 115 for it that I got for a good price last year. I have a SAITO 100 in my H9 Spitfire 60.

I scrapped the canon barrel idea with the copper pipes and tire valves as machine gun barrels. I thought that I should save
some weight so that I can put in a pilot instead.
When I first had that idea, I did not know what the real MK II looked like up close. Upon reading some of
the posts here and seeing some good close up pictures of the wings, I decided to go the "Black Hole" route.

March can't come soon enough.

I have searched the net for some good 1/8 or 1/7 full figure RAF WWII pilots, but could not find anything that
I could use. Lot's of 1/4,1/5,/1/6 out there though.
Short of bringing the wifes Singer sewing machine out and making my own,
any of the brothers know of a good place to get one of these?

I would hate to swipe my sons Woody figure.

Chucksolo, please check out the first page pictures of the Mk IX Spit on Park Flyers & Backyard flyers forum and notice the level flight shot of the up elevator deflection angle which turns out to be fairly close for normal level flight peformance for PZ's killer size Spitfire. I would have responded sooner but my PC seems to have developed a malware problem that, so far I have been unable to fix. (Got a partial fix now.)

#1 WARBIRDRCER, thank you for the great job with the tee shirts! Sun was shinning this morning so I started charging batteries with full intensions to attack the war torn skys while proudly wearing one of my Spitfire Brotherhood tee shirts. Its getting dark outside now so looks like I have to stand down today. My chronologically challenged eyes scare me when I try to see my Spit in the air under such conditions.

Now it works - 5 minutes later. Gotta be malware on my machine, must do some more security scans. I just saw an article on WND entitled: "Your worst fears about 'BIG BROTHER' are true." Maybe if we are careful we can continue to enjoy our Spitfires, especially now that the "western world" and the Queen are so interested in those Burma Spitfires and Sir Winston. We can always hope.

I would definitely use nothing smaller than a Power 90 or similar for the TF Jug. You could even go to a P110 for it. Much draggier airframe than the Spit.

A Woody doll really,

I took one of my Daughters dolls, years ago as she is now 20, and cut off the head, and arms and fit a WW-2 pilot in its place. There is no substitute for a full figure pilot in my 60 size Corsair. As pics show, he is in appropriate Bougainville attire, except his may west.

I am trying my hand at weathering my ESM Spit. I need some help with the exhaust stacks. Does anyone have a closeup of their model that they feel like turned out very realistic? I would like to know what colors you used and the technique (Airbrush, drybrush).

I am looking for a full pilot figure as I have the Topflite cockpit with the
seat installed.
I like FireBee's suggestion with a doll body and have a look for a decent pilot bust.
Then play Dr. Frankenstein and make my own.
