Kolm 135 install in CARF Mustang
#176
Perfect!!!
Photo 1 : i will close the inlet of the cooler
photo 3: isolate the carbs totally. the second one will get to hot.... and if the inlet of the carb is to near the cowling, you can cut it down.
Photo 4: for better cooling you can install a spoiler so the air get sucked out!
all install is perfect!

Hi Guys,
[QUOTE=Salte;11957318]Nice Do you have more info on the PPG Liquid metal?
I think this is the product.
http://www.automotivepaintandequipme...quid_Metal.pdf
DrScoles - Your Mustang looks fantastic ! Good to see the Firgelli actuator worked out for the canopy.
Ixtrim - What is the base colour of your P47 "Snafu" I am assembling a CompArf P47 and will be doing the same scheme.

Thanks a lot Lxtrim! I will follow your "instructions".
Two questions:
1. When you say isolate the carbs completely, do you mean that I should wrap them in heat reflecting material, or isolate them so that they get their own "air in/out" system? If heat reflecting, maybe this can be used (photo attached at bottom)?
2. The formost exhaust pipe sticks out a bit too much to my liking.... Can I cut it flush with the cowling, or are there resaons not to do this?

This is the Isolation material is perfekt! Own Airflow is not needed. Look aT facebook:

this Cooling was made by me.
Tomorrow when i back in Office i Send You photos of mY exhaust.
I did 20mm Pipes On the Original an they go Out on the right side. They Only look 1mm Out of the cowling. So no problem so far....

Kim, The Spit looks awesome! It looks like you have more room than I did in the mustang. Wondering if the scale of the Spit is slightly larger than the mustang? I really wanted to do the spit, but now that the mustang is painted, I'm happy with the decision. I would like to do the spit some day though.
And Tom, why didn't you share that FB site earlier!!

Sorry doc i forgot
a cool guy from Swizerland. He came to me for Building the cooling becaus his first Test destroyed the engine.
The Scale exhaust is a big Desaster. Don't do this... To expensive. To much work And problems.
All you planes are awesome. My Spitfire is sold And i Wait for my Mustang!

I wanted to try the scale exhaust, but the electric starter would make it near impossible. So, I'm still going to use them, but just for looks. I'll grind off the backs of them and glue them to cowl. At the time, I really thought the scale exhaust would be cool, then once I figured out how much work it would be…. not so cool anymore ;-) All thats left on my mustang is the checkerboard, then the decals….

Think about the Very high Temperature of the exhaust pipes.... Glue will be not enough. Because of Isolation, the endpipes get extremly hot.
After one flight you have to Wait about half an Hour because the Heat under the cowl is to high for the carbs.
but.. Of course it is cool

Ok Lxtrim (are you Thomas Gass?), here are my modifications..... tell me if there are things I still need to change
I may have over-done the heat protection, but I can remove some if I need to adjust any needles. The spoiler is 2cm into the airstream, but I wonder if the angle is correct.
Is it an option to cut out openings in the side panel, to supply the carbs with fresh cold air? (and cover the holes with metal mesh)?
My "air out" exit hole is bigger than the photos I saw on the FB site you referred to, but that is ok? (just not very scale like).

Hell Kim (yes im Thomas )
your installation looks good. cut out the adjust-needles. will be easier to handle. you can also isolate the exhaust-pipes. will be less arm unter the Cowl.
your spoiler also looks good!
fresh air for the carbs i did in my spit with IL135. but, don´t make holes... make little intakes. i will search for Photos of it.
also i show you how i did with the exhaust pipes. i don´t like the first pipe in front of the cooler...

Guys, Is this ok, or am I way off in some way?
There are 30mm aluminium tubes glued to the side panel, sticking just inside the extra part mounted/screwed on to the carbs (my Moki does not have one mounted). The cut out in the side panel is bigger than the opening inside the carb, so there should be enough air supply to the carbs.....I hope.
Some will think I have ruined the scale look, but I am ok with this. Compromises .....

Hi Guys, some great info on this thread.
One question.....why not duct incoming cool air over the carb side of the engine and exhaust the hot section on the other side to the carbs? that way the carbs are always in the cool airflow side of the system.

Craig, I have been thinking the same during my cooling construction/build. I just got back inside, after my very first testrun with my Spitfire/Kolm 135. I tested both without the cowling completly closed, and with the side plates off. I took some video/photos as well (incl telemetry data), and will edit it before posting later today

Ok, here is the video/photos. Please comment.....it seems the engine runs fine after 2 minutes, but rich after 3+. I thought engines usually run leaner when getting hotter?

Temp 1 is sylinder... yes 1, and temp 2.... you get it
Some photos showing how the sylinders cool down (side panels kept on during cool down):

Kim, can you redo the video in fahrenheit...;-) :-) ... So you got 250 on one cylinder, is that an acceptable temp? 50 degree difference from front to back, that seems tolerable. It will probably be a few months before I get mine back together, still a lot of finish work to do. Thanks for sharing the video and your experience with it. I read that these motors were broken in at the factory can that be verified??
