Hey Guys.
I have this kit and would like to repaint it before I assemble it. I would like to paint it in the 3 color scheme, and would kike to use Nelson Hobby Paints. The question is which blue do I use for the dark blue.
Thanks for the help,
Ron

Hi Luke, I went to order 2 canopy's last night along with a cockpit kit, but had to stop to help with my sons homework. I see today your products page is stating you are done with this run. Tell me that is'nt so. Let us know if you get to making more. Thank you Capt. Winters

Well Luke, I'm on a rough grass field... One guy has this bird and nosed it over trashing his canpoy, so i gave him my stock canopy - since i had no intention of using it... So an extra for the off chance I flip my bird hard... and the extra doors.. well I'm sure those will take some abuse. Get while the gettin's good, ya know?
Now to get the other birds on the assembly line finished!

I took my first two flights with this bird yesterday. Good Flying Plane. Tracks well on take off and was up within 25 Ft. Landed both times with full flaps, with no tendency to drop a wing. Had a minor issue in that the plane wanted to climb. May put in one degree of down thrust in engine mount. Also, some paint chipping on right leading edge, even after applying a polyurethane overcoat.
Flying with CJM Retracts and Magnum 120. The Magnum 120 was more that enough power.
I'm Happy

After lurrking around this thread for several months, you guys have inspired me to get a CMP Hellcat too. After a 25 year career in Naval Aviation, I have a bit of a bias toward Navy warbirds (although I do have a P-47).
By the way, I found this print of a Hellcat with side number 83. I'm not sure this is the model for the CMP paint scheme, but its similar. ( http://www.aviationarthangar.com/f6fhellcat.html )
Thanks to all for the great ideas and tips. Keep 'em coming!

Has anybody found anymore detail on this scheme? I've been looking.. Found lots of cool stuff, but nothing on the actual markings or a pilot or anything...
And thanks for the link to AAH, john... I've got 5 paintings set to order for me and my grandfather.. Including that one of the F6F. P-38 and F4U over Lady Liberty...

OH NO! Canopies are all gone??? Hey Luke/Dion/Your Highness, I just got a 2nd Hellcat off E-bay for ... get this... $104 incl S&H and insurance. Rediculous! Bonus to me! I wanted to do the full bash on this 2nd kit while flying my first. I need to get out there and purchase all parts you still have. I want everything incl any and all instructions you've written. Would love to make my own tailwheel retract etc. And, of course, I have this thread to draw from. Great learning tool. Tnen... if you shoudl ever decide to make any more of those gawjus canopies, I'll be in line for a couple of those too.
Would you mind giving me the link to your ordering site one more time?
Thanks!

Never mind about providing the link yet again. I found your link on your RCU profile and purchased all available goodies. Now.. I just need to get canopies. Hmmm....
If you aren't going to make more, is the canopy mold still useable? Might a person liberate the mold from you? You know.. pick up the torch and all that. I'm sure there will be a demand for some time. There is a demand for at least two sitting in front of thsi screen! LOL
Thanks Luke,

I'll definately try glassing one of the sets... What weight cloth would you suggest? My extent of glassing has been to reenforce my wing joints lol

And I owe my fellow modellers on this thread a "thank you" for not pointing out what a dumb@$$ I can be LOL Much earlier in this thread I was all proud of the neato switch I made to disengage the tailwheel steering servo when the tailwheel is in the retracted position. It only dawned on me a couple weeks ago that I could have simply mixed tailwheel steering with the retract switch on the transmitter. Thanks for not turning this thread into a "TOM IS SO LAME" gang-bash.

Great News!!! I'm very glad to hear there are more canpoies coming. I'm in no rush at all. It'll be some time until I'm at that point. I'm a sloooow builder and have on ein the works already. In fact, might even pm you for an opinion on a generic wing sheeting question I have. (I'm sick of reading threads on wing sheeting and none address my question). Anyway, when I do get to working on hellcat #2, I'll post the work on this thread and keep it going.
You posted some detail on the tailwheel earlier in this thread. I'll use that if that's the same notes you're speaking of? If you have any unposted tech tips, I'd be very happy to have them.
Are you done with your's yet? Still painting? I'm curious to know what your final weight came to be? And then.. of course.. how she flies!
Flew mine a few times a couple weeks ago. I'm much more comfortable with her now. Greased landings with flaps.... overshoot runway without. Even without all the scale trimmings, the big Hellcat is a majestic bird on the ramp.

Thanks for your help. If you have any info or templates for your scale tailwheel would you be willing to share? I feel bad asking because you have offered so much to this build and asked very little in return.
I'll be starting mine very soon.

James

I think the only splurge item on my Hellcat is the tail wheel. My cockpit was justified and paid for by removing weight elsewhere. Running one servo for aileron, cutting all the plywood and glass from the cockpit area and six inches of wing. My cockpit only weighs 1 1/2oz, about the weight of one servo. I completely sanded off the original paint on the fuselage and used my ultra lite finishing system on the wing and tail. I'm very curious myself to see what she comes in at, I'll post the #'s when I get them for sure.

Goodness. On other threads, all you get are shady, poorly detailed opinions. On this thread, you get a detailed "How to" complete with lab and study materials! LOL
Sheeeyit... every plane I make from now on will have a hand made, retractable tailwheel... even tricycle geared models.
Awesome!
Thanks again Luke!

LOL! Thanks Tom! If I don't have enough "students" sign in then I'm not going to bother, I can build it faster without documenting everything. You all have the drawings now anyway, so go for it!
You on the other hand Tom are a very good student, you never forget your pencil!
