I like the above pics. Is it possible to do the work with out take off the covering? I’m not planning on glassing the wing. I was hoping to minimize the work. Is there any out there who has done it that way?

If you were carefull it can be done. I would use a thin diamond blade in my dremel and make the cuts down the side where the rails were to be glued in and then remove that balsa. Now make the mods needed to the bay as necc to install your gear and some good hardwood blocks. What I did on this one was remove the existing ribs on each side down to the ply floor but no lower leaving the ply floor which is actually not the floor since the wing is upside down at this point. Now make the hardwood blocks for the rails. Now that these are made make some new ply ribs but make sure that they fit good with good contact all around these will be glued in beside the rails. Now before I glued anything in I made sure of a good dry fit after that I glued in 3/8" and 1/2" triangle stock anywhere I could to beef up the area. Now I glue in the ply ribs making sure of plenty of 30 minute epoxy especially at the front and rear of the rib where it attaches to the spar. After that is setup I glue in the hardwood rails making sure that all areas that contact wood have 30 minute epoxy on it. Now if the blocks are very true then since the ply floor is still in you can use that to glue to and it should be square to the wing so that the gear should be sitting at the correct angle. If you do all this carefully all you should have exposed is a bit of ply on each side about 1/8" that you can take a brush and touch up. Just use your imagination and your preveous experiance it isn't that hard and it will be much stronger in the end. Oh and have paper towels ready already torn so that if you get glue on the wing you can get it wiped up right away. Hope this helps hard to explain perfectly.

Luke--I don't know if, when you get this--but I was one who ordered some of your parts for the F6F Hellcat. I just want to say, I find the canopy, cockpit kit, etc great workmanship, and am very glad to be part of the "crowd" to get some of the goods, while they lasted. No---I haven't touched the Hellcat at all---MUST get going on it---tough to do from a hotel in Los Angeles,California,...so, I study on "how to's "....Hope you're doing well in this Hobby Business.....still making parts?? All Best-----Edward A. Sarkisian

Well, I acquired one of these in a trade last week, new in the box - as well as a YS 120F, Robart rotating retracts (probably some other goodies in the box - haven't had time to look) (went out at lunch - looks like I have a retractable tail wheel too)
Up to about page 15 reading this thread - I'm sure I'll gain a wealth of knowledge. First nitro plane since I got back into the hobby 4 yrs ago - been flying electric so far. My buddy has the CMP Zero, I should have some fun chasing it around.

Do you make drop tanks and bombs for the Corsair 60 size ? I'm reading the post and seen your remarks about the hellcats and i have a top flite Corsair with intiror kit and dumy engine i hope to build into a show plane and still fly it. I planning on building a hellcat to go with my P51 and Corsair. I hope to build and fly the full set of WWII fighters.
Anyway Thanks Jim S

Good to hear from someone on this thread. My Hellcat (from Nitro Planes) is still in the box but I'm collecting the components. I got a really good deal on it from a guy at the AMA show last Jan. He had bought it but had to many other projects. It came with Century retracts... $225 for the plane and retracts. Also I bought a hydraulic unit from a friend...$20 below cost. I plan on putting a 125 Saito in mine. It's a good engine with all the power this bird needs. I want to keep the weight down. The guy I bought it from an old time buider said it best not to add to much weight to war birds, they fly best without it. A lot of people on this are doing a lot different things to theirs but I plan on keeping it simple. I think it looks great the way she is but I might change some of the grafpics.
Good Luck with yours.

Once you're done Shubova, we'll have to hit Whittier Narrows and fly. Worked on mine a bit last night, got the wing hold down bolts in, belly pan tacked on. Onboard glow driver showed up yesterday, will probably work on that tonight.

OldFart,
That would be great but it won't be happening soon. Got another project (GP Supper Stearman) to finsh. I haven't been to the Narrows in years. I had bad experience there...to mean crazy people. Maybe on a week day might be better.
Thanks for the offer.

Shubova,
I had a cmp hellcat with sierra, retracts os 1.20 inverted with onboard glow painted in tri color flew great wieght was not a problem.I ,m making one now the same way.I stalled on landing and cart wheeled it and totaled it,man it was a good looker and flyer, it flew great.Loved it so much I had to make another. Also have and flying now the great planes super stearman with a g-26 also flys and looks great. So dont worry to much about the weight with a saito 125 you should be fine.
good luck,
Fred

Opinions - I'm at the stage where I need to find a home for the 2000mah RX battery and the onboard glow driver (which also has a battery) - I'm considering locating them above the fuel tank, in the area "below" the servo tray (below with the fuselage inverted)
Were there any big CG issues with the Hellcat? I know my buddy's A6M Zero took a lot of nose weight.

Thanks. I'd planned on locating the RX battery and glow driver module "under" the servo tray anyway (cleaner) - but this just reinforces my belief. YS 120 will help
