Sportstar1, thanks for your comment. I think my DA can only go to YAK54 from Aeroworks now. But what would be the best gas engine choice for P-47? Zenoah G-38 or ZDZ 40RV or Fuji BT32 which one you will choose in terms of reliability, easy of operation and cost...

I was going to write this ARF off, but this thread changed my mine. I went to my LHS and picked one up. I typically fly large scale aerobatic planes, but I've been eager to get my hands on a large scale warbird!

I think that you guys that are putting the big thumpers in this airframe are asking for suffering down the road. Remember that the thing is basicly a stringer and former fuse and the firewall/box is 3mm ply. It will fly on a Saito 120. My friends has a Moki 1.50 and he says that is too much. I put a Moki 2.1 in mine just because that is what I had laying around. I take off at 1/3 throttle for a nice scale run and climb out- 1/2 to full leads to about a 50 foot run and rocket take off. I only use close to full for big 4-500 foot loops. I really reenforced the firebox with triangle stock and multiple layers of 2 oz cloth both inside and out. It is just a great airplane and flys better than about anything I have flown. With that 20 inch prop at idle and the flaps at 60 degrees it slows down to a walk. I love it. Scott

kind of the pot calling the kettel black the moki 2.1 is a big thumper and it wouldn't be as much fun if it didn't have enough power as far as one flying on a 120 4s i would say it may fly but not very good

I doubt it'll fly with a Saito 120 on the nose. I had a Saito 125 on a H9 60 size P-51 Mustang and it wasn't that fast.

I am trying to find a good combination between speed without compromising the airframe. Do you guys think that the G-38 would be a good engine? I am considering a G-45, but that seems too extreme. I saw the RCU video with the G-26 and it was just too slow for my liking.

I have a Fuji 32 in mine turning an 18x8W APC at 7400rpm and it performs well. As the engine is not broken in, yet, it does adequate loops, from level, without falling off. As the engine picks up rpm, with breakin, it will just mean I can reduce the throttle. The Fuji most likely weighs less than a G38. No tail weight was needed. 16lbs.

I saw a video on youtube of a H9 p-47 flying with the Fuji 32cc and it looked pretty fast. That is why I am considering the G-38... but then when I saw that the G-45 was only $70 more I went hmmmmmmmmm. lol

Two points from my own experience with this fine model:

1. I put a G-26 (1.55 CID) in mine and I would say that is the absolute minimum size 2-stroke you can safely get by with. I wouldn't even consider a 1.20 4-stroke; 1.50 4-stroke is probably the minimum.

2. For those considering big engines, the fuselage is VERY fragile. Don't just look at the engine box / firewall. Look inside the airframe. There isn't much to it. And every stick seems to have been hot-glued together. If you're going to use a big engine, you might consider reinforcing the entire airframe.

There are others on this thread who have used the G-38 to great satisfaction. Their posts are way pack around pages 30-40. Based upon their experiences I picked up an FPE 2.4, which is a 40cc engine, for mine. Now I just need to get the kit...

The Moki does vibrate a bit more than I would like for that airframe.As I stated-the only reason I put the 2.1 in it was that it was sitting in the engine box- The only other engine in there was a Webra Bully and that is even more of a beast. I didnt want to put the 2.1 in after Bobs advice regarding his 1.5 -But I didnt want to spend another 300 bucks even more . The whole pland was outfitted under the WIHLA plan (What I Had Laying Around). The retract servos are even different- one Cirrus and one Hitec. I think the Cirrus was on sale for $32 at Hobby People. It only has 80oz of torque but it has worked just fine so far. Scott

Riotgear I fly a 19 lb Spit with a G38 and 18x10 TF prop and it flyes it perfect. I think the G38 is the most user friendly motor out there. Just gass and go. Mine has the mag ign and spring starter. We fly at 6000 ft also. Rich

Some pilots have installed G-38's. Some others have complained about the sturdiness of the firewall. I had a mishap with my P-47 and the firewall collapsed on me - after I had epoxied all joints inside and out. As with the entire fuselage, the structure of the engine box is too weak for such a large heavy plane - engine. (Interestingly, I've found that the wings are very strong.)

To answer your question, I would say the G-38 is not too extreme based on what those using it have experenced. I put a G-26 in mine, and I really regret it. It flies okay, and will even do nice loops. But it has no reserve power to compensate for my dumb thumbs.

I would urge anybody building this kit - regardless of engine - to do some serious firewal/engine box strengthening.

Here's a couple pics from today. Two with BME44s, one with G38. None of the firewalls are modified (although I soaked mine in thinned epoxy as usual).All are holding up well after numerous flights. You ought to hear them on formation low pass!

The factory struts are weak. One hard landing and I had to straighten one strut and re weld the scissors mount on the other.

after flying mine for the entire summer with out a major problem with the gear i have decided to change the struts not because mine are week but they don't have enough travel to be an efective shockabsover
i just happen to have a set of dave platt strruts that can be made to fit they have about 1" of travel were the stock strut is about 1/2"

CAPT G, how does the G-38 fly the P-47 compared to the BME-44?

Have been flying my Thunderbolt all summer with the stock retracts, can't get on with the flaps so do not bother. Have bounced the plane on several occasions without any problems. Any advice on using the flaps would be appreciated. Picture not great.
