Default Simjet 1200 ASE startup problem

Recently I purchased a used Simjet Turbine and I am trying to get it running. I get one of two outcomes. First it spooled up many times and never started on the powermax fuel, I then got a message on the data unit that stated Timed out. Next few trys it did start on the powermax but never started on the Kero. It then stopped an another message stated weak gas? Does anyone know what might be my problem? I'm new to Simjet turbines. I have run Jetcats and Wren turbines.

Hello.

Kerry would be the right person to solve this, but i would like to try while you wait. Please check the glow plug. Make sure its coil is pulled down and outside
of the plug's body about 1 to 2 coils and make sure it si not touching the ground side at all. Check to see if the amount of gas is sufficient to sustain the combustion
temp in the chamber to heat up the kero. Last but not least, check to see if the fuel pump was running during the fuel ramp after ignition of PowerMax. Battery deserve
a good check too. Good luck.

Thanks, I managed to get the turbine running. I noticed that the fuel plug in the ECU was in incorrectly. But not I have another issue.

After running the engine twice tonight after the second run when I shut the turbine down I noticed that the starter would not engage the compresser nut. It would pop out about 1/16 short of enguageing the nut. Now it will not engauge at all to do another start. ?

Other questions:
What is the recommended Idle speed. I noticed that it was set to 55,000rpm. Seems high to me.

Also After the second run time I noticed that the turbine was very, very hot to the touch. Even the mounts were hot and the front of the turbine was hot. could not touch it, would burn your fingers. It is mounted on a Bob cat so no ducting.

If this is a SIMJET 1200, the idle speed is 50,000 > 52,000 rpm. For a 2300 or 3000 the idle is 30,000 > 31,000.

When you shut down the turnbine, you need to do so from the TX using the Trhottle trim lever. If you do so by turning off the power to the ECU, the cool down cycle will be terminated and the cool down will not take place. In this event, turn Rx power off, then back on and advance the Throttle stick to high and this will re-initiate the cooldown.

As for the starter engagment, you may need to replace the O-ring or check to see that the Brass bendix assy. is functioning and extending properly and may need just a drop of oil in the pin slot. You can "re-use" this O-ring by removing it with a straight pin and turning it over and re-installing.

IF you have the older style SIMJET where the motor has to manualy clearanced to the compressor nut, that is easily done by removing the starter nose cone, sliding the starter motor forward unitl it just touches the compressor nut. Place a pencil mark onto the electric motor housing at the rear of the aluminum starter housing. Using this line, back the starter motor away from the compressor nut 3/32" and carefully re-install the nose cone which will lock the starter motor into the correct position. All should work properly if the O-ring is in satisfactory condition.

Kerry,

Thanks for the info. It is a 1200 14lb turbine that i got from Mike spendle. I will have to take a look at the starter to see what needs to be done there. I'll try the Oil and then look at the O-ring. The only reason I questioned the Idle is that it pushes my Bobcat forward at a pretty good pase just on Idle without giving and throttle.

Kerry,

I got the turbine running after re-aligning the starter to the compressor nut, I also turned over the o-ring and oiled it. I also found that I was not using a large enough starter battery. I put in a 11.1V 2200mh Li-po batter and she fired right up. The "Weak gas reading" was do to not enough gas being placed the on board starting gas tank. The Idle was set a little too high, so I changed it to be within 50,000 rpm on Idle. I have since flown my bobcat several times with the Simjet 1200 14 ASE. I must say this is a very good engine an I love the how fast the turbine spools up from Idle to full power. I would defiantly buy another Simjet. Thank for your input.
