RE: Predator Outrigger Project
It looks like you are using plastic tubing to cool the motor-does that work well? I don't bother cooling mine but I only run 6 cells.Nice job so far-the compartments are cramped on the Predator especially once the deck is on.I built a little platform over the stuffing tube to mount the receiver.[8D]

about that ford bashing... with the price of fuel these days, I think I might as well stick to Honda
back on topic... I experimented with some fiberglassing today (first time), but since I only had epoxy, I used an old undershirt for the material. I think it turned out fine, I might add some pink insulation foam to it for a bit more stiffness - OH, forgot to mention, this is going to be the canopy...
I also attached the other sponson and put in all of the electronics, now all I have to do is make a rudder and linkage, primer and paint, then test it on the water!

when I was building mine (small predator) someone told me not to bother too mutch about the weight, I think that mean light dech without internals (my thought) as for example mine boat weighed les than 300g empty and about 800g with hardware, engine, esc and li-po... so I think You can put as mutch weight that makes power as you wish and the bigger "power" density the better.
besides I run 5070 rpm/v feigao S motor and it works great in my aplication on 2S li po. I used y531 x632 props. x62 was really fast.. the crusual thing is to choose good esc and batteries ir you want to go really fast

RE: Predator Outrigger Project
Hmm... I haven't really been worrying about weight with this project, but I did do a weigh in out of curiosity...
so far with everything except the rudder and steering linkage, the boat ways in at 1pound, 15ounces (about 870g)
The ballance is right behind the sponsons, and the boat feels and looks very nice now that both sponsons are on and aligned. Then only thing that I am a bit worried about is the floatation of the hull. I can't realy envision how its small displacement will keep some 2 pounds afloat. Am I just overreacting or does it realy have any flotation issues? for those that have built the boat, where would be the normal waterline for it?
Now I am making a rudder - I just want to know what dimensions work well (I am also running a standard servo, will it be enough torque? its futaba S3003)

Water line on the hull has no effect to performance. When on plane the water line will always be similar. A boat that sits deeper in the water does not mean it will be slower.
Rudder - Around 2-1/2-3" x 1" will work well.
40 oz in or greater will be more than enough. A standard servo is a bit large but will work.
Don't worry so much about weight.

RE: Predator Outrigger Project
Ok, thank you!
my first boat (airboat) was too big and heavy for my motor and electronics and couldn't get on plane to well so that is why I am concerned about weight. I guess that water props are more effective at propelling things in water than air props
I think I will lay down the servo and run a flexible bike brake linkage wire to the rudder. Its going to be a short connection so there should'nt be too much added weight (yeah, I know you told me not to worry about it... its kinda a mental thing... must stop! [&:])

RE: Predator Outrigger Project
this morning i broke 110 mph i have a heavily modified predator with a single 800 size motor and two 5000mah lipo final speed was 112 on the gps. man that thing freaken suprised me this morning i had been tinkering around with some hydrofoil-like turning fins i guess i got it just right cause the entire front end was floating above the water.

Try using aluminum pipe around the motor it will work better
PS just do not put Cadillac on your boat cause it will spend more time in the repair shop than on the water

David. the one boat that failsl on me does not even have a cadillac logo on the side of it.
my car is very reliable and dependable. More so then you PT loser. which is newer BTW compared to my older lac.

RE: Predator Outrigger Project
well, glad to hear you ask... I haven't gotten anything done on it because of soccer tryouts for the school team. for the past week there were sessions from 8-12 and 4-6 every day and you had to go to all of them... I usualy came back tired (we ran an average of 6 miles a day) and just plopped down on the couch and ate...
all that time didn't go in vain, because I made the JV team, but now it will be even harder to find time to work on the boat. I'll have to finish it up in the next few weeks because of school, but as the soccer season progresses, there should be less lengthy practices. [8D]

RE: Predator Outrigger Project
Well, Ive found some time to work on the boat, reconfigured the cooling system a bit, had some fun bending tubing (I actually learned a lot!)
I stabilized the stuffing tube a bit, mostly for looks. Decided to ditch the glass-shirt cowl, went with a plain ply and balsa one instead. The rudder was by far the hardest to make, it is fairly close to a true wedge, that took a lot of elbow greese (a plain ol file is all I have to shape metal)
next I need to make a stand for the boat and glue the top deck on. then its preping and painting. I have decided to say goodbye to the honda stickers and will use leftovers from my T4. Team Associated should realy start making boats!
but before all of that, I have to connect the rudder linkage.
