Default 16' Rigger

Hi guys! Im busy building a 16' predator rigger. This is my first rigger and I still know very little about this. I was thinking of using this outrunner motor. Do you guys think it will do? Im a south african scholar and im building this as a expo project so I need it to be fast. I was also wondering what the overall weight in grams (g) should be for a 16' rigger after it is fully completed.. The build is comming along very nicely and I will soon post pics. Thanks very much.<table cellspacing="3" cellpadding="1" bordercolor="#0062c4" border="0" bgcolor="#d5daff" width="800"> <tbody> <tr> <td bgcolor="#ffe1ff" valign="top"> <div align="center">High Quality</div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#ffe1ff" width="391" valign="top"> <div align="center"></div> </td> <td bgcolor="#ffe1ff" width="610" valign="top"></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#239ac7" valign="top"></td> <td bgcolor="#239ac7" valign="top"><span class="Style2"><span class="Style1"> SPECIFICATIONS</span></span></td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#ffffff" valign="top"></td> <td bgcolor="#ffffff" valign="top"> <p class="Style12">Brushless Motor KDS WS2217 3800kv for 450 size helis</p> <p class="Style12">High Quality product.</p>

if you are building any thing that is 16' you are going to need a lot more than that, maybe a v6 would do the job but since you are most likely building a 16" rigger i'll leave your typo alone

Haha sorry for that. I ment to say 16". All that you are going to accomplish by using a v6 in a 16' rigger is to sink it haha. Please guys I need all the help I can get. Project must be finished on the 21th of July. Thanks again

Motor is fine. Almost too large to fit but, if it fits run it.

On 2S it will go well, on 3S it would be a monster and you might be pushing it past it's 45 amp limit. I would try to use a 60amp speed control.

On 2S you can start with 27mm props up to 35mm, watch your temperatures and start with short runs checking every 40 seconds or so.
On 3S is experimental and you could burn something up. I would try to get your Lipo's from Hobby City and use at least 20C packs to 30C.
Don't worry about weight too much, you want it rigid and strong. No bricks though.

What else do you need to know?

Hey I just built a 16" rigger based on the Predator plans. I left out the rear sponsons and off course built with wood of slightly smaller thicknesses, but overall, it's a mini Predator. I'm going with the 380 10L from Offshore electrics for my motor and a 60 amp esc to be on the safe side, because I'll be running on 3s LiPos.

Thanks very much. I have allready buy all the parts, including the motor. Was just wondering if I should go back and trade it for something els but now im very glad to hear that it will be ok! I have a 25C 3s LiPo that I would be using. The guy at the hobby shop gave me a 40A speed control so im still very much unshure about that.. Ive made the hull a little bit wider so the motor fits easily. Haha I very glad to hear that its gonna be a monster. Think you've just helped me find a name for the boat.

Hi Christo,

Outrunners don't have much aircooling in a narrow hull like a rigger, though the build in fan will help.
If you have the time and resources, make a watercooled motormount, so you can at least cool away the heat from the stator.

The picture shows a commercial version, but you can make your own out of aluminum strip and drill a hole to fit an aluminum tube, where the water runs through,

Let me know if I should provide a pic of that.

Regards, Jan.

Its gonna be hard to make it watercooled. The whole motor turns with the shaft accept that tiny little section just behind the shaft. If you look at the picture, note that the motor has a "fan" section in the back that also turn with the motor. Do you think it would be able to cool it enough for short runs? Will post pics shortly of my progress so far with the hull.

Hi Christo,

Unlike some forum members, I actually read the opening post and look at the pictures, so I know what I'm talking about when I reply...

The motor in the picture I posted is an outrunner, but without the cooling fan your T-Rex motor has.
The chrome plated ring between the motormount and the motor is tha part that's being watercooled.

I know of (very)large outrunners that have watercooling channels in the stator, but this motor is too small for such cooling.

If by short runs you mean under a minute (or two) you should be able to get away with it, provided the ambient temperature isn't already high...
I know myself; if the boat runs well and fast, I don't want to stop and before I know it I'll have to retreive a smoking boat...

Personally I wouldn't risk running without at least watercooling the ESC and motormount, but, it's your boat.

Regards, Jan.

Hi Christo,

I added two pictures of a custom made mount in my son's Monohull.
It's made out of 6 mm aluminum strip, with a Ø 3,3 mm hole drilled through the top.
These holes were widened, 10 mm deep, to Ø 4 mm and I glued in two pieces of 4 mm aluminum tubing with Locktite.

The KB 36-60-09L 2700KV motor, used in this set-up, tends to run rather hot, so every little bit helps.
The water through the mount comes directly from the ESC, and it cools down the front of the motor considerably.

I have the same set-up in my boat, and my motor, with just the cooling jacket, is hotter after a run, so I'm preparing the same for that one.

Regards, Jan.

Im not planing to paint my rigger. Kind of like the wood colour. Would normal resin do to cover it with?

Yes, but make the last coat a clear varnish one, as epoxy ages rather yellow and will get brittle over time if left uncovered.

Thanks very much Jan. I see you are from Netherland. Here in South Afrika we speak Afrikaans. As far as I know it is very similar to youre language. Se if you can understand this... Baie dankie vir al jou hulp. Ek wardeer dit baie en sal fotos stuur van die boot as dit klaar is. Lekker dag verder.

Graag gedaan Christo!

Ik ben benieuwd naar de foto's van je rigger.

Groeten, Jan.

For those few who don't understand Dutch and Afrikaans:

You're welcome!
Looking forward to seeing pictures of your rigger.

Regards, Jan.
