I think I read somewhere that the tandems are harder to manuever by hand/dolly. Is this true?

I also have a rear view camera to pin the trailer so no problem there

Roger.
Do you have a rough idea of the weight of your trailer and its tongue weight. The reason I ask is, I was thinking of putting a hitch on my Ford Explorer in order to have it available as an alternative to towing with my full size Ford E150 conversion van. The Explorer specs are similar to your Kia. My 6x6.5x12 V-nose weighs about 2,100 lbs loaded with a hitch weight of about 280 (13%).
Thanks,
Jim

My trailer weighs 3400 lbs empty and the tongue weight is about 200 lbs.
My Kia is rated to tow 5000 lbs with a tongue weight of 500 lbs I think;
Of course, it all depends how you distribute the weight in the trailer for proper tongue weight.

My trailer serves as a second workshop, planes stay in all of the time except when being worked on. Heated in the winter time and fan for air circulation in the summer. Certainly saves on the hangar rash.

I've seen pictures of your trailer and it must be one of the nicest I have seen so far, you should post pictures again...

I've read in some other forums that Lithium ion batteries have a much shortened life when left in hot trailers over a season or two. Just something to keep an eye on if you are going to do it. I leave my planes in my trailer too but my trailer stays in my temperature controlled garage

SORRY about that Marty I didnt know how to size the pics so Ill redo them. I didnt mean to sound smart about leaving the planes in the trailers but I live in Florida and unless you have AC 24 7 your mono cote will be history!!! Im just starting out on rc about a year now,and going to the field with planes in the back of a truck is a real pain we get alot of rain. Cant use a topper cause Im a commercial fisherman and need my truck open for stone crab traps, bait fish ,ice etc so a top would not work for me. I found this 6x10 wells cargo with tor and brakes for $1,250 and couldnt pass it up.After looking at the other trailers I am going to go with the side racks. I have heavy fish net one foot from the roof that will also hold wings nicely also 110 hookup with outside and inside plug ,generater on front when I need it Marine 12 volt bat for rechargeing planes at the feild. I never leave my planes charge overnight in the trailer fires can happen when you least expect them I dont take the chance..It does look small but not when you go in I can put my 27%yak 54,60 twist,60 cub,40 nexstar, filton byp,and two other electrics with all my gear very easly. Unless your really big into going all over the states etc and staying over a smaller trailer is the best for me.these pics come out better. HAY Im just glad I got a trailer LOL

Hey guys! I found a great little add on for our trailers. Remote controlled driving lamps from Wal-Mart! Just mount them as back up lights, and when you are backing in after a long days flying and it's too dark to see, just push a button on the included clicker and VIOLA!
I don't mean to sound like a salesman for these things, but for 39 bucks, it's worth it to not hit something. Will post picture of the installation soon.

My 6x12' United Trailer, I can put almost 10 models in her plus coolers. She has a 3000lb gross and I figure I'm close to that. The tongue weight is of big concern, I'm running about 420lbs. That should be ok given the 10-15%rule, the car handles well with that weight. It's pretty hard to keep the weight out of the front trailer section with cabinets and batteries. I did add my spare tire to rear roof rack to help shift a aft moment on the cg. I have a counter top area which is great for eating, fixing stuff and kids can keep busy with drawing and such on it.
Laptop with a ATT aircard gives me internet service so I can order replacement parts right after the crash. Added tons of LED AA powered lites from KMART and a extra spot lite on side. I'm running 3 deep cycle marine 12 volt batteries in paralell to a 1400watt inverter.

The weather station I bought at WAL MART for $80, smaller siren looking pipe is the temp/humidity senor. Works very well. This whole trailer deal started out of getting the seaplane flying bug. The guys fly on Tuesdays and I loved it so much I wanted to fly otehr days and you need a way to egt your model when it quits way out which it always does. That led to a canoe and trolling motor and batteries and fishing rods and models all in the back of a Chevy wagon.
The trailer also enables me to take my 2 girls along, they stay busy for hours playing inside the trailer. They can lay and watch dvd's. do their homework and just play. I usually go to the field for 10-12 hours so it's nice to have a place to sit. The interent access is nice also for weather radar maps in the summer. The nice part is when I leave the house I can go flying, seaplane flying, rc boating or all of the above. It was a well worth while investment.
I eventually plan to go to some fly in's next year in the state, the trailer gives me an option of sleeping over for weekend events.

N215PB, I like transporting planes assembled. Maximizes flying time!
I have a question. Has anyone tried transporting larger planes, such as a 1/5 scale Cub fully assembled, standing on it's nose up against the wall? I'm thinking of placing nose on foam on floor (wheels to wall), with 4 or 6 cradles supporting leading edge of wing & 2 cradles suporting leading edge of horiz. stab. Just purchased a 5x8 trailer & Cub would fit side wall nicely while small electrics are held on 45 degree racks on opposite wall.
In all the pics I've seen in this thread I've not seen this done, but can't understand why it wouldn't work if setup properly so as not to stress any certain area.

Reason why we don't do it is to maximize space. I have 10 planes from a Delta all the way up to a 35% Comp Arf Extra in my trailer. I would never fit that many planes assembled in a 6x12 trailer. I like to bring a variety of planes when I fly so I can choose depending on the flying site, weather, mood, etc. Other than my Stearman Bipe, it doesn't take that long to put them together.

I ususally keep 2 1/5 Cub's in with wings on plus another 6- with wings off. Dependes on your fleet and howmuch trouble you wanna got to. I try to rotate the fleet though every few months. Sometimes it's nice just to put 3 in with wings on and thats it.

Thanks for the replies. The 1/5 Cub is the only plane I own larger than a 40 size. Would probably only haul 2 or 3 of those (40's), & everything else smaller electrics. I was concerned if there was some reason I wasn't aware of that a larger plane shouldn't be transported in the nose down manner I mentioned.

We are getting a new (to us) car and chances are it will be a sedan , we currently have a station wagon. Now I was thinking of a small box type traller approx. 4` x 4` x 7` long as I want to carry about 3 x 40 size planes. Now has any one made a tralier with slide out racks for wings and fuz, I was thinking of double doors at the back. Also would some one like to post pics of the suspension of their smaller traliers so I can get an idea of whats what. I have built normal box traliers before but the suspension is way to stiff ( I think ) tia. cheers the pope

Yes I have made one, I will have to find the pictures as I dont have it anymore,
I use a Luan door as a sliding second floor...
For the suspension, these little trailers come with two leaf springs, and I removed one to make it softer and it worked .
Also I made the trailer box with 3/4" plywood t weigh it down and soften the ride.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the pics Roger, what size wheels are they? I didnt want to go to small as the new car would have 15" wheels and i hate the look of a tralier that drags its a*rse but yours looks reasonably good. Also is there anybody else with under floor pics of small traliers ?Thanks. Cheers the pope

Hi Pope,
I , like you was looking for a smaller trailer. The one pictured is 8 ft Long, 4 ft wide and 5 ft high. When I purchased it there were no fittings inside and would be easily able to have a slide out system. I have seen one of these built on a 6 x 4 trailer here in Sydney.
The way I have fitted it out I am able to carry a 35% aircraft and a Helicopter on the bottom, with three normal sized aircraft in the centre and all the wings above this.
We also carry the field box and the necessary pop up Gazebo and deck chairs etc.
I tow this with either a Camry, Camry Wagon or a Celica with no problems.
The wheels are 13'' Holden. The complete trailer rides very well and it allows me to be completely self sufficient with the added advantage that the complete trailer fits easily into the workshop and the aircraft are stored full time in the trailer, even the charging before flight is done with the aircraft located in the trailer.
Any further information feel free to ask.
Regards
