Guys!

The Extra has a new life with the death of my Magic! I put the Jeti back in the Extra, but this time I geared it 2:1 and put on a 13x8 prop! The LG had to be adjusted for ground clearence.

I salvaged out a 4S3P from leftovers to power this craft. Each cell was individually charged then added to the pack.

300+ watts at 22 Amps. DD the watts were about the same, but the Amps were higher. Flys well but the verticle is limited. If I adjust the LG or put on bigger wheels, I will try a 14x7.

Guys

The flight performance was okay with the 14x7 prop and the verticle seemed a little better. The 13x8 and 14x7 prop options seem about equal. Neither as good as I had hoped for.

Back at the shop I pulled a 14x10 from my Avistar. This system change yielded 355 watts or about 90 watts per pound with 28 amps drawn. I will test fly it on Friday AM.

This same system will gave 450 watts+ another plane, I have found that the pieced togather lipo pack can't deliver the load that the nimh pack can.

Guys!

Good news! I ordered new lipo 4S2P 15 C packs on Sunday from TH. I recieved them yesterday PM. With a fresh charge on board this Am, I was able to fly my small Extra with unlimited verticle and for 10 minutes. I tried both a 14x10 and 13x8 prop. The prop adaptor spun off with the 14x10 and had to land. I resecured the adaptor and switched to the 13x8.

Guys,

I switched the Jeti back to DD with a 10x5 and the new Lipo's. I bent the GB during a prop strike landing. Still unlimited Verticle and 10 minutes time with no GB hassle. I did have to open the Cowl up for more cooling air flow

Its all in the batteries. I am using the 2 Kokam 15C 2S2P 4000 mah packs wired to 4S2P.

StephenT,

You stated earlier that you used a Kokam 3200mah 3s pack in the plane and gave you a good 10mins. of flight. How was the vertical with this setup? Also, I am looking at going with a axi motor with this battery pack, would this help with the flight time? I am looking at doing mild aerobatics with this setup and was wondering how it would work out. Thanks, and great thread keep up the reports.

The verticle is good but not unlimited with a 3S 3200 Kokam lipo pack. From level flight I could pull straight up for abount 50 feet until a stall. The 4S really made a difference. A watt meter really helps. Get a good battery. A bunch of 1500 mah packs linked didn't cut it.

It has been my expierence that AXI motors pull more AMPS than my Jeti and they get hotter. I have used both a 282010 and a 282610 motor with 3S and 4S packs. The 282610 has a lot more power than the 282010. It would fly my Magic verticle on 4S with a 14x7 prop and near verticle with a 15x8 prop on 3S. My Jeti has lasted 3+ years and my AXI has been replaced already.

Been flying my Converted Modeltech Extra 300 for about 6 months now, and it's been a lot of fun.

AXI 2820/12 swinging a APC 11/7 E prop
PolyQuest 3S-1P 3100 batteries, with a castle creations 45 Amp speed control and BEC
Draws 28 Amps on the bench and stays up for well over 10 minutes with power to spare for a couple of go arounds on landing. Which are often needed as it does like to come in hot.

does fly fast, and furious. Had one of the 3-D flyers give it a go, and found that it can do things that I never have learned to do. Inverted flat spins, aileron rolls on a string from horizon to horizon, Knife edge flight the full length of the runway at about 5 ft. Vertical is limited, but on some of the manuevers he found that if he dove slightly to really get some speed, it would go vertical, but not for too long.

all in all a fun plane to fly, and pretty sturdy. Survived some pretty tough landings, and only took off the landing gear.

I have glued my LG on about 10 times in the last year. It sure comes in fast. It doesn't help that we have power lines at the dominant approach end of the FF.

Stephen, love the post. I was considering to convert that exact plane myself and am right now looking on E-bay for motors and speed controlers. I think this is the body you are looking for?

http://www.globalhobby.com/public/gallery/120831.asp

I don't know anything about brushless etc since I converted, but i am trying to build up something I can fly at the park down the street. I was thinking about the ME-109 as well. I just want to turn and burn!!!

All I need is the Belly pan. It is ten bucks from HP. A new fuse doesn't come with one. I hate to back order it because by the time it comes, The plane may be dead.

Stephen,

Did you try calling Global Hobbies, or e-mailing them?

18480 Bandilier Circle, Fountain Valley, CA
TEL 714-963-0329 FAX 714-962-6236
[email protected]

I'm sure you probably did. Either way, I would just drive down there and demand the part. At Hobby People they will sometimes open the box of a new one and sell you the part. I live in Costa Mesa just a few miles away. You want me to go put some pressure on them for ya...

Stephen,

I went by the shop today for you (so I could have an excuse to go). Hobby People showed one belly pan in La Habra, but when they called they sales clerk couldn't find it. However, the manager did say that they could take one out of a kit for customer service issues. So, would you like me to do that for you? I could send it you priority mail. I have a paypal account and could tell you exactly how much it will be. You might think this is weird, but 1.) You're thread was great and I was thinking of doing the same as I said before. 2.) I hate being grounded for any reason. 3.) It gives me another reason to go back to the hobby shop!

On a side note, when I said to the manager "Do you have a belly pan for the Extra 300?" He said no, I don't think so. Are you the guy that converted yours to electric? I was wondering if you just happened to call and he put two and two together.

Anyway, let me know what you would like to do. My home e-mail address is [email protected] and that's the same for my paypal.

Joe-

JTB and all,

I was flying at 0700 this am and placed a 12x4 prop on my Extra. My fellow flier Willum once told me that a flater longer prop would slow down the landing approach. He was right. I was able to get in some on my best approaches and landing ever for this plane with a simple prop change. Now I actually have to keep a little power on just before touch down. The verticle is great but I don't think it will ever hover.

Don't think I got your e-mail, try again.

Glad to hear you were able to slow the plane down.

Nice thread! I am looking to convert a Great Planes Corair. It is 2.5-3lbs and is called their combat corsair. 340 sqr in. for a 17-20 oz/sqft. I was planning to use 550motor and 2:1 gear box from Great Planes Super Sportster as it is a 3.25lb plane with 383sq in so oz/sqft should be favorable in the Corsair. Any thoughts? Think it will fly? Using 3cell 2100 thunder power in Super sportster and don't need more than 1/2 throttle to fly and motor is barely warm to touch after.

I converted my 4.5 pound Modeltech Magic to electric with many power systems. One that I tried was a 550 motor geared 2.5:1. It flew and could do loops and rolls but was slow with a low climb rate. I had to use a 16x10 prop to get it off the ground and a 10 cell nimh 1950 AUP pack. I think it drew 28 Amps.

You may want to try direct drive and an 8x4 prop. A Corsair will need speed to fly because of the thin wing. If you are tossing the plane, this may work. Make sure your battery can take the amps.

I tried a geared and DD 550 motor in my Extra and couldn't get off the ground.

If all else fails try a brushless Jeti system. In the long run it is cheaper. If

guys,

Best flying ever with apc 11x5.5 prop. Better than 12x4.
