I've repainted in desert scheme "Gelb 14" Joachim Marseille.
My flying buddy's got one too, he's repainting in Heinrich Bartel's "Rot 13" JG 27 scheme, what is interesting is that Bartel's airfield when he flew that plane is the very field we fly in (Kalamaki, Athens, Greece)

I have a evaluation 26 in mine and it flys it ok but slow. Not a lot of extra power. I am now in the process of ripping out the beam mount and installing a firewall. Then will be putting in a 36 with a 10 pitch as described earlier. If you build it very light the 20 range engine will be just fine. Mine is on the heavy side due to all the scale detail I did.
i have Robart electric retracts in mine but century jet make retracts for it as well.

unless they changes the beam mounts they are soft. i removed mine and mounted a saito 150, then a electric. hope to test fly soon.
my point, if you want a firewall mount engine put a firewall in, you will have to replace or tweek what comes in it at some point anyhow.

Here is my motor of choice...lots of power for a 23cc
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._9_000rpm.html
BF-109 is still for sale at nitroplanes thats where i picked it up in the clearance section
http://www.nitroplanes.com/cmpmebf10h12.html
I have a S%!T ton of carbon fiber sheeting different thicknesses ill be using to re-enforce the mounting area. Ill have to check out the esm retracts...would like to stick to electric.

CMP warbirds are usually lighter than ESM. The CMP 109 balances well without extra lead weight in the nose due to the large heavy Dave Platt spinner (300 gr), did you add any weight in the SBD?
#2038
I´ve just didn´t know it yet. Now I´m waiting for an aluminium scale spinner, so we can say, that this is a weight in the nose. But this is the dark site of the warbirds with a short nose. I had to put all batteries in the nose.

I am flying bf 109 60/90 arf from great planes using e-flights gear and a nitro os 102 special, the gear works fine (not expensive) and NO ONE sneaks by me.

i've acquired a CMP Me 109 from a club member. The airframe and CJ retracts. He never had much luck with it. He did reposition the landing gear forward. I'm going to try to keep it as light as possible. Using a DLE 20 because I have one. I understand the Dave Platt 145mm spinner is the only one out there for this plane. He was using the kit plastic spinner. It blew up on him and injured his arm, so I know I don't want the kit spinner. I want to use the bottom half of the dive brakes as split flaps, but want to hook them up to the flaps so I don't need an extra pair of servos. I'll go back and read through this thread and see what I can learn.

The kit spinner is claiming kills!
Must-do mods:
- Put some stiff beams between the engine mounts and the airframe wood, the ply is soft and if you install the engine directly on it, it will vibrate out of place and possibly destroy the ignition sensor (happened to me) - see pics on post #2028 above
- Reinforce the retract mounts, also soft wood there
- Fix the top radiator flaps to the wing and use the bottom ones as flaps (like you suggest)
- Use 2 elevator servos with flex-rods, or anything more robust than the stock pushrod with fork
- The tailwheel pushrod is a little tricky to get rotating properly without binding
That's all I can remember, needs a bit of work but flies well and looks nice!

Nick, thanks. So far:
engine mounts reinforced,
gear move forward and mounts rebuilt and reinforced,
elevator rod stiffened but no duel elevator servos,
Tail wheel seems ok,
Already has William Bros wheels.
E-mailed Dave Platt re the spinner, but no response so far.
I still have to do the flaps, and install all the servos. I'll probably have every thing done. The spinner is the only thing I don't have.
The plane has flow before with a DLE 20 and did ok. Not a speed demon but flew ok and did all the maneuvers, large loops, reverses etc.
I have a Bowman ring I can install in the DLE 20. But this is a good running engine with good compression. I don't see the ring making a big difference.
The DLE came out of a 63" wingspan VQ Hurricane. It was WAY overpowered with almost unlimited vertical. But that is not what I am looking for here.

I've made progress on the used 109. Engine installed, flaps set up like I want. I have the retracts ready to go in but found I didn't have enough air lines to finish. Checked and local hobby shop didn't have any in stock. So I'll have to order some. Got the spinner from Dave Platt. In the process of cutting it for a three blade prop. Planning on using a 16-8 three blade, either Grupner or Master Airscrew. Away for home working. Maybe the air lines will be there next week and I can finish. I'm planning on repainting after the maiden.

Hey RB, just be aware that, in my opinion, the plane is going to be a bit underpowered with the DLE 20. I am flying mine on a PTE36 at this point and it is by no means a speed demon. Build it as light as you can. I know there is another member (Hot Rod Todd?) flying this plane on an OS 108. As far as I know this is the smallest engine used on this airframe and it makes a bit more power on the top end than the DLE 20 will. So, with that said, be aware that you will be flying the airplane with an engine that is at the very bottom of the required power range. I'm not trying to discourage you or piss on your parade as I'm sure you are a very competent pilot, I just want to make sure you know what you're getting into.
I also scrapped the beam mount configuration and built a firewall since the largest beam mount gasser engine that would fit between the factory rails still didn't fly the plane as confidently as I would prefer. Of course, I like to have a lot of reserve power so take that into account.

Allow me to disagree here. I've been flying this plane with a DLE 20 and it sure flew it well. I would say the DLE 20 is right in the MIDDLE of the power range, flies comfortably, climbs well but not unlimited vertical neither speed demon in a straight line.
A 17x8 2-blade is faster than 16x8x3, so before you cut the spinner give it some thought.
That said, I am going to experiment with a 26cc MVVS which should swing a 17x10 - 18x10 for higher top speed, but this is more curiosity than necessity.
I'll post a video later with the DLE so you can judge for yourself.

Fair enough, good performance is a subjective matter to some extent. Final "All Up Weight" is going to have a big effect for sure. AUW on my 109 is 15.5 lbs and I doubt a DLE 20 would be able to do much more than fly it in circles. It doesn't have anything close to unlimited vertical with the PTE 36 swinging a 16X10 three blade or an 18X10 two blade. I'm interested to see your video. This is a good discussion.
