Sorry for confusion about hat was talking about the mount
Would i take a grinder to such an engine? No way![X(]
Nice setup there 3der. Is that the carbon copy spinner? What mount are you planning to use?

From: Jersey,
yes I recognised Irvine spinner...
I am not convinced about a dubro mount.... make sure that engine is properly run in before puting it in the model...
sorry if I missed the posts but what exhaust syst you going for ?
Given (I assume) you are going profilm white everywhere - I suggest a simple scheme over the top - white is heavy !
I think 9402 is not enough on the rudder but id DOES depend on what you plan to do with it ! 8511 for me is just enough ! that is one huge surface when you got the power on !

I have used one of those dubro mounts myself in the past, I would suggest getting one of the proper mounts out there, if nothing else to save some weight. The Dubro ones weigh a ton [:@].
Luke I am surprised that the 160 doesnt fit. I suggest you make sure before grinding up the mount or getting a new one.

I spent last night sorting the tailend out, used the scoll saw to cut the bevel's in, sweet and striaght, how much throw you got on the elevators and how much is needed, I got about 60* at the moment.

3der - I thought Dave had an 8511 on the rudder....still think 9402 is not enough - and remember his is electric and may not be subjected to the same rudder strain as YS power..
foofy - the answer re elevator throw is as much as you can possibly get.... I have max rates set at about 85 degrees !

60 degrees is absolutely fine for movement with the right Centre of gravity. Unless you take measures during the build you wont get more than this anyway before fouling the rudder cables. I had about 85 degrees down movement but have reduced it to 60 - it still does the most wicked inverted wall you have ever seen - will get a vid up of this soon.
Sprink, The YS 160 definitely doesnt fit. i will get pictures showing the differences bettween the castings of the 140L and 160DZ.
They did supply an anti-foaming clunk with the engine though - should i use this in my hopper tank or stay with the standard clunk?
As far as the Dubro mounts go they are fine, the only prob is you have to change the mount rubbers about once every 50 flights, and i personally dont think they absorb anywhere near the vibration that the more expensive mounts do. I will be getting one of the better hyde or Zn line alu mounts, as the Baron advised when i was first deciding. Should have listened to him more closely-his advice is sound every time

Right then, the first pic is of the 140L
Second pic of the 160DZ
Spot the difference
Third is of the two engines side by side
Fourth is of the 160 up against the Moki 180 (which is about 1/2lb heavier)

i got a 9402 on the rudder (set up properly though with 140% ATV servo travel with about 45 Degree rudder movement) this gives aprox 25% more power at the rudder than the stated servo torque as the machanical advantage is about 25% in favor of the servo. IE the rudder moves less than the servo.
if it were the other way round then you would have 25% less torque.

Like the idea of precutting the chamfers for control surfaces... I got a bandsaw for Xmas!
Not a nice handy bench top one, but a hodding great floorstanding thing... It might be a bit big for modelling!!!
Regards,
Steve

Takes so much time out of doing it with the band saw, gets that professional straight edge, will post some picies on my wesbite soon.

If you are using a hopper tank the foam clunk is less of a need - depends on size of the hopper but I would suggest using it in main tank.
Engine Mount - Dont care what anyone says - those Dubro ones are gash..
One must remember that the engine mount required is based on not just the engine but the airframe... If the C140 was a 12lb plane and built like the preverbial brick sht house then its less of an issue...
But its not - and the surfaces are HUGE which means your servios need as much protection from vibration as your airframe does !
A few pages back I suggested a solution to avoiding the rudder closed loop interference with elevator...
Luke is right 60 is fine for most 3D, but to have a third setting with 85 provides you with some great results for specific manouvres..

adam,
If you check the stiffness of your mount after 50 odd flights you will find that it will be much looser than when new
A good sign of this is to look at the blackvalve cover at the top of the cylinder head - if this has paint on it or shows sign of wear on the sides then the mount is too knackered ( lets the engine kick into the cowl) a while back in this thread i also posted pics of the new and knackered rubbers.
I acutally found the gator mount to be absolutely fine as a budget mount. Having said that i have not used anything else yet so have nothing to compare it to. An interesting measure of how good a mount is is on the hyde site - where the increase in current draw from the servos at neutral positions with the engine running depends on how good the mount is. Would be interesting to try this on the capiche.
