Post your favourite hinges. The ones you have the most faith in.

why do you guys like CA hinges ?

Large engines would rip those apart.

They will?

Maybe so, I really have not seen any properly installed CA hinge ripped out that did not remove wing TE wood with it., but I guess it could happen. When you say ripped out, I can think that you mean the Engine will provide so much thrust and vibration to the surfaces that they will rip the surface, hinge and all its attached wood from the airframe. I do not own anything in the 35% category, so this may be the case with them. But for a properly installed RadioSouth Pro CA hinge to fail, The wood it is mounted to must be ripped from the wing(stab) (elevator) to get the hinge out. So it would not matter what the hinge is in this case, the mounting area on each surface will have chunks of wood removed. I guess you could consider this CA hinge failure. I would call it structural failure. I bet any hinge would fail if enough pressure applied to the surface, be it CA, Kleet, RObart, etc.

Mt point is CA hinge is not the culprit of failure, its the lack of support in the surface that allows a CA hinge to fail . That is if you call removing "attached" wood failure.

I can't remeber where I saw it....but I saw this site with a guy that used CA hinges on his 40% Carden Edge. What do you guys think about this?

Default CA hinge failure

I think lots of people are worried about CA hinges failing by breaking off after fatiguing from a large engines vibration on the large control surfaces(not pulling out of the wood). Personally I think something like a Saito 180 would be harder on these than a big 150 twin gasser. I've had very good luck with the Great Planes CA hinges on up to 120 size(no breaks in 7 years on a very active plane). Never tried them on any bigger planes. I think the round pinned hinges would be easier to install on a big plane.

ca hinges on a 40% Edge ? YIKES! That will last from about 12:00 - noon !!

Start running ca with big planes 1/4 scale and up with large engines especially gas.. You will be very dissapointed you did.
My buddy has a midwest cap with a quadra42. He used ca hinges and after less than 20 flights the left side elevator hinges broke. It did not pull out with wood stuck to the ends. They broke right in the center where they pivot.
Large engines rattle the surfaces more than smaller engines, even when you balance the prop. It's the rotating assembly that's not perfectly balanced and also alot of spinners aren't balanced either.

Large control surfaces that deflect lots of air and weigh more than small surfaces will eventually destroy CA hinges. Been there done.

For smaller airplanes they are ok..

Default Synthetic Paper Hinges

Synthetic Paper Hinges glued with CA rocks with smaller airplanes but I did read some-where that if U´re up to bigger stuff don´t use em...

I don´t have live experience other than on my stick (1.5 meter with os 40 fx engine) and my cap (Kyosho with os52 4-stroke) but it seems to work perfect for these planes (2 seasons on my stick and 1 season on my cap232)

Robart hinge points all the way. I used to use only CA hinges from various manufs, but once I learned how to install the Robart hinges, it's all I use.

BTW, did you know that CA hinges are nothing more than electric motor armature insulation cut into strips????

I like both CA hinges and Kletts.A properly installed CA hinge is very strong. If the hinge breaks,it is often because too much CA was used making it stiff and brittle.I use them in my smaller planes.Yet I don't think I would use them in 1/4 scale or bigger. The Klett pinned hinges would make more sense to me.Just my thoughts on the subject. Its all really personal preference.

Robat hinges are very easy to install, all you have to do is drill a hole on the center line. but for my .60 size and down i use sonictronics CA hinges and have never had a problem..Just my 2 cents...

I use the Dubro or klett pin hinges but I replace the pin with 1 long music wire pin running through all of the hinges. yes it is harder to get them all lined up but when done properly it provides a nice non binding hinge line. I would not use ca hinges on any thing using a gas engine when you have a control surface that has some bind in it causing tension on the hinges, with the vibration of a gas motor it will tear up the ca hinges. As for robart hinge points they are ok but you can still end up getting the hinges off line and I have seen that when this is done the control surface will make a popping noise from the hinge point that is out of line bending. personal preference. I would use the pin hinges it also leaves the control surface where it can be easily removed if repairs are needed to be done, which does and will happen. just my 1 cent worth of info.

Thanks Steve

Just make sure you have wood the entire length of the hinge point. Few models have enough wood in the trailing edge of the wing to prevent the end of the hinge from going all the way through into the wing. I always install a small piece of hard balsa behind the area I'm going to place a hinge. This also prevents the glue from running through the hole into the wing where it does no good.

I like DuBro nylon hinges.

Chris, I think the plane you are thinking of was that AW Edge that Joe had.

Default Robart

For Giant Planes I like Robart hinges but the Dubro or any CA hinges for small planes is OK.

Anyone had problems with Robart Hinges getting sloppy? I used them on a Lanier 33% Extra 300s and a Giles, since they were recommended for giant scale. They never pulled out, but the Pin seemed to wear quickly and you could literally wiggle the control surface, that combined with some Metal geared servo slop really concerned me. Looking for a better alternative for my next giant scale project. BTW, I used CA hinges on a Midwest Cap with a Moki 2.10 with Great results. they were "giant scale" CA hinges, possibly from B&B specialties, can't remember.

If you use the appropriate number of hinges, I have 5 in each aileron of my 28% Extra 300s, they should not wear. I have many, many flights on that plane and the hinges are still as tight as the day I installed them.
