Default 300s for 3d work

All right guys. I ordered a great planes 300s .40 with a Os50sx.
Yes I know its not a 3d plane BUT.

I will mod the tail for 3d work and I will Lighten it up as much as possible. I know about the plastic parts and plan on getting the glass parts for it. Is there any thing else I should know about before I start the project?????

Any help would be gratefull. Thanks.

Your basically wasting your time trying to get this plane to 3D. It's just not designed for it no matter what mods you might make. If you want a good 3D plane in the .40 size try a Morris Sledge Profile. Don't get me wrong the Extra 300S is a great plane but not for 3D.

I'm with David the Wreckrman here....it's not a 3D ship...I've owned 2 of them....still own one of the 2(see my avatar)...I have .91 4-stroke in mine....and it's a VERY nice flying plane, totally unlimited in most anything, EXCEPT 3-D...fo get ab ouut it...forget it. Sure she'll hover some, and knife edge til cows come home....and tumble...wow..all kinds of em... but harrier...nope... torque roll LOL...it won't do any of the high alpha manuevers...at least not like other true 3D capable planes. That plane was designed before 3D was as common place as it is today...matter of fact, no one outside of the TOC competitors were doing it when that .40size Extra was kitted...and I don't think even TOC was doing 3D yet.
Don't get me wrong here...I really really like my Extra..it just wont do those types of aerobatics.

If you must try though....change the hinge lines, less stabilizer areas,, stuff like that......don't just add control surface...the whole hinge lines, to and include the aileron must be changed...a bunch....to sit and figure it out though....I'd go choose another plane in less time. Just my take on my experience with my favorite plane here. I don't want to discourage you, but dont want to here of someone that was disappointed either....but I've been proven wrong before too, so if you do decide to take this on...I wish you the best..

Dgrant thanks for the nice words and yes i was going to move the hinge line not just make the elevator bigger. The ailrons I was going to ethier 1.5 or 2" . I did 2" in my gp cap and it worked out nicely. The hinge line on the elevator will be at least 50/50 with a counter balance and the same on the rudder.

I all ready have a profile(OMP540) and want somthing scale this time around. I would love a 540 and I think I can convert the 300 but I would be stuck with the cowl. I think I got everything else though. Really the only problem I see with the 300 and 3D is the wieght. They tend to be heavy.
But like you said you love yours. And thats not the first time Iv heard this. Thats whats makes me want to keep it a 300. Pluse Iv seen some pics of the 300's and man they are pretty.

I have got a os 50sx going in it so i dont think power is an issue. I just have to lithen the he** out of it.

Let my try this.
What would you think of a gp 300s with 2" ail. funfly tail, a os50 with a 13x5 wood prop with macs muffler that wieghs 5 to 5.5lbs????
Thats what Im pushing for. How about the 540 idiea?? What do you guys have to say about that??????
Im open for idieas. What other KIT is out there in the .40 class thats scale that i can do. As far as I know Im stuck.
Thanks again for the help.

Don't forget about the GP Giles202. I've seen that one first hand, and flew one. It was powered with a .91 4-stroke and from what I could tell from flying, is much better suited to 3D stuff. Also, it builds farely light as a stock plane. Much newer design.

ya I though about it but i dont like the way that giles looks and i like small(.40 size) motors. I had there cap with a 61 but i think it would have done better with a 46. That was my 2nd so another one is out of the?.no comment on the 540 coversion? oh well.

Which 540 are you looking at Dennis? I haven't kept a close eye on the .40-.60 market for a few months..I've been getting into bigger planes, and there are so many coming out every week it seems now.

What is it about the 300 that prevents it from extreme 3D? Any 300, that is... not just the .40 or .60 size - how about 1/4 or 33%?

They say that the big one's 3D pretty good. I think the small one's are just to heavy. That and the tail feathers beening too small. The 300 was desinged before 3D was happening. I dont think it would be to hard to mod one and get it to but i will have to see.

Dennis, Keep us posted on the .40 GP 300 S. I am just covering mine. It should be ready in about a week. I built it with carbon fiber for strength and powered it with a Super Tigre 60. We'll see how it goes.

see thats what i am talking about. eveybody is running .60 or big 4strokes. Im not putting you down but i had a gp cap232 with a 60 and i think it would have been better with a 46. I just checked and the plane was shipped wed so i should have it soon. I am going to do everything i can to lighten it up with out weaken it. Iv got a os50sx coming with the plane.

Soulman....are you putting a bigger tail on it???? You could move the hinge line on the elevator real easy. Ok good luck and let me know how it went.

Well i got my kit today. Dug through it and checked it out. Like i said before i want a 540 so i looked at the wing to see what it would take to get a strait leading edge. Well.............I think i need to make new ribs. I started too and i got 2 done and i noticed that the two i just made wieghed atleast half of what the one kit rib wieghed. I can take soooo much wieght out of this thing its silly. and thats just the wing!!!!!

I looked at the fuse and it may need a little more thought to convert than the wing. I am replancing the ply sides and bottom with balsa. I cant believe they used ply for the under belly. The plane is built to crash not fly. Every thing is soooo over built.

It will be a little weaker but I dont think i can break it in the air and thats all im worred about. Let me know if you guys want to see some pics of construction. Im sure i can post some here when i get some work done on it.

DGrant thanks for the info. are you talking about right under the canopy?? Thats where the wing is going. I will look a little more closly to that area. Im going to finish the ribs tomarrow and if all's good than i will look into the fuse before i get to far ahead of my self.
Now i know theres some interst in the so i will keep you updated. For more updates i will have text and pic on my page.
thanks again!!!

Yes...It would be just behind #2main bulkhead. If you look at the profile of the fusalage(without wing installed), the area I'm speaking of is above the biggest section of wing cut-out, which is just behind #2 main bulkhead...you'll see it, it is just in front of the canopy area. This is where they break thier backs, and if you look at one that's built already(or your really good at visuals from plans), you'll see there's not alot of anything there for structure. It's really OK, and it doesn't need any modifying, as with the Extra it does what it needs. You just might want to be aware if your altering what's there. Have fun.

I checked it out and it seens fine. but im allso looking at it like a 540 with the wing on the top of the box. I got a piece of 1/8 balsa and cut out a fuse side. the stock ply side is only a little heaver. NO BAD. The only problem im having is the cowl. no matter what i do it wont look like a 540. I check on cutting the canopy shorter and it looks close.
I will do a little more thinking in the 540 but its starting to look like its going to be a real lite 300

There is a reason for that, if you build the plane stock you will need more than a 45 for good performance. I first flew mine with an ST45, and I had to build a lot of speed before doing any vertical maneuvers. I don't have to worry about that anymore with an ST75. Remember this plane isn't that much smaller than their 60 size (90 really).

I got a better picture of the elevator. 90 deg of throw possible but will start at 40 for 3D. Also moved hinge line up 1/2 inch and added 1 inch to elevator.
