GP Cap 232

My standard setup for d/r is
low rates - 35 % - Aileron/ele
low rates - 25% -Rudder
High Rates - 70% Aileron/ele
High rates - 50% Rudder
Works like a champ .. Then you can fine tune to your liking depending on the model.
Glad to hear the ST and Cap are a good combo.

Dan, Thanks for the expo info. I can use a good place to start! Once the engine issues are sorted out this is gonna be awesome! I'm still tweaking between flights. Using about half a tank in 6 minutes/such good news!

Whoooooooo-Hoooooooo! The ST 3000 Pulls this thing like a mule! I'm almost ready to put the cowl on it. Found I lost a screw from the landing gear at clean up time. There are now locking nuts on the inside. The CG seems sensative to fuel consumption. The loops are HUGE! The snaps and rolls stop instantly as soon as the sticks center. It makes me look like a much better pilot that I really am[or thought I was]. I'm using a little bit less than a half a tank in 6 minutes. I got 8-10 flights in today. I usually get in about 4 on a good day on my other planes. I think I need to get another case of fuel really soon. Where did it all go? Can I get out again tomorrow? It's fun again!!!!

Bill & Dan,
How can using 10 oz of fuel make this such a drastically different plane? It goes from being a blast to fly to being a big handfull flying like its tail heavy[for me] in just a few minutes. The cowl made a big difference, too. Those 2 clicks of up came out and add 2 down. I brought it in pretty hard the last time. Left wheel marks on the bottom of the wing. The gear and mount seem fine. I think I jinxed myself putting the cowl on. I'll have it off now to check it over really well. I think the battery is going to make a trip forward, at least for a day.

The main difference is the tank is well forward of the CG point.
It's been a while and I do not remember the weight of glow fuel per ounce but 10 ounces that far forward is going to make a difference. That's why I suggested the CG I mentioned in my emials to you. It sounds as though even with the cowl on you were tail heavy, very tail heavy at the end of your flights
Here is what I would suggest, start with the CG 1/2 inch forward of the recommended spot and have the cowl on. Take off, get it trimmed out with the TX and then pull a 45 degree upline, once you have the line established, roll the plane over, make sure it is stillon that line and then let go of the elevator, you want to the plane to come level, inverted, in around 3 to 5 seconds. Now fly around for about 5 minutes and do the same thing, this time it will probably take around 5 to 7 seconds to come level. Doing it this way indicates just how nose or tail heavy you are. If the nose drops, the time it takes to come level is a good indication of how heavy you are. If the nose stays on the line, you are neutral, if the nose climbs tyou are tail heavy. This is the main way we do it in IMAC to get the CG the way we want it
I would be glad to meet up with you anytime in the evening during the week and most anytime on Saturdays to get this solved for you. I'll email you my phone number. I am available every day this week after 4:00pm and this Saturday.

Fred,
Sorry I missed your call, was called into a meeting that went until a few minutes ago
kochj,
Nah, I just wanted a pair of them (GP Version, flew the H9 version and did not like it), one for a spare, guess I'm going to have to call around and try to find one NIB
Maybe I'll have to get the 100cc 580 instead

Dang, I just checked the Tower website....You guys are right....it is discontinued.......I "was" waiting for them to come back in stock to order a spare. I wonder why they did this, the Cap was a keeper. One of their best but yet they still continue to make some not so desirable planes......

I did some research on GP's Performance Series models. There are five mono wing models of similar scale to the Cap 232 that are part of GP's performance series. They are listed below along with the approx release date (which i have picked up from the instruction manuals - could be out abit) along with the wing joining method for each model.
1) Cap 232 (rel 2005) Single large fixed wing with single hardwood joiner
2) Yak54 (rel 2006) 2 piece wing with carbon joiner (bolt on)
3) Extra 300s (rel 2007) 2 piece with carbon joiner (bolt on)
4) SU31 (rel 2007) Single fixed wing with 2 x timber joiners + 2 x aluminium support joiners all laminated together into a single joiner arrangement. Uses an anti rotation pin in the wing join.
5) Edge 540 (rel 2008) Single large fixed wing with hardwood joiner + 1 aluminium joiners fixed each side (2 aluminium plates in total) all laminated together.
It is interesting to note that the three models that utilise a single large wing have over time used an upgraded spar/brace arrangement with the Cap232 being by far the weakest to my mind.
I suppose you would expect design development and improvement over time. I am surprised though that there havent been more failures with the joining method on the cap.

I know of a shop in oz that has one.

I dont want to harp on it, but after my wing issue several pages back, i dont have to many positive things to say about this model. I believe the cap was one of the first models released under GP's performance series. Over time, there has been progressive strengthing of the wing joint in later models in this range that utilise the single large wing arrangement. After the spray i gave them, i cant help but think that deep down they acknowledge that their wing join is not that great even though they wont admit it publically.
There are also far better options out there if you want to run a DLE55. Alot of guys at our field fly 88" Pilot RC models with a DLE55 and they go like rocketships.
Sorry guys, but i wont lose any sleep over it being discontinued.

Sad part is my Cap met an early demise about 6 months ago when a club member came out to our field, not his club field, and turned his radio on while I was up. Got shot down, by not only a club member, but an AMA card holder, and they told us we were bad. Luckily only the plane was a total wreck, the equipment and motor are fine. With the slow down in the construction industry, I haven't had the money to replace it, and now it's gone.

Bill and everyone-
Despite the way it wound up, I had a terrific time learning a lot about set up from you today, during the build, and through these posts. I had a blast flying this bird right to the very end. What a great airplane! This is now my new standard. The changes for today to CG, etc. were by all rights dead on and I had the three most fun flights ever. Next
Thank You All!

Fred,
I was as sorry and sad as you were seeing it go down like that. I just got home and I'll post some pics from today, including the end results, just as soon as I get them off the camera, should be about an hour or less depending on how they look right out of the camera
