RE: Showtime
Flew mine with them in.
Did an inverted flat spin via a blender, did it fine. I figured the flat turning tricks would suffer, however didn't seem to bother it. Next week I will be able to do more when I get more time. |
RE: Showtime
ORIGINAL: Barry Cazier :)YNOT, thanks for the info. Really does sound like a fun plane. Drumbum...looking forward to your comments. Question: It sounds like the plane has plenty of rudder. Are the SFGs a benefit, do they make some manuvers prettier/easier/better/possible or are they just so much hype? One more. Do you fly with the SFGs or without them? Do you even take them with you? Do you plug the wing when you don't fly with them? Guess that was 3. Thanks, Barry OK i feel i have done too many long posts for 1 day:D |
RE: Showtime
:)Drum. Excellent review. Now that is information we can use. Informative, instructive, fair and useful.
Thank you Barry |

glad you liked it.. i would never make it as a writer:)

ORIGINAL: drumbum glad you liked it.. i would never make it as a writer:) Regards your overall score for the showtime, well I disagree - purely for technical reasons. I added the scores you gave for each category and then calculated the mean.........it came out as 8.181818181818!!:D;) |
RE: Showtime
:)^Horatio>. Good luck with your F90. On the overall score you didn't allow for fun factor. Drum is obviously thrilled with his plane. Even more after he ironed his ailerons flat. That accounts for the addional .818181818 score.:D Anyways, I think it was a good review and offers everybody an honest look at the plane. I like that way of commenting. It makes us think a little bit about individual traits of the plane and stops some of the "Best plane I ever flew" comments. Although I love/make those comments myself I think it's nice to see "reviews" that departmentalize the plane into things it does very well and in some case things that it doesn't do well. Anyways, I like the concept. Maybe others have some ideas on catagories we could add. Fun Factor. Color scheme. Ease of assembly at the field. Pucker factor. Etc. Etc. Etc.
BTW. "This in the best plane I've ever owned". Thanks, Barry |
RE: Showtime
:)Another comment for those who are interested. The YS 110 is in stock now. Central Hobbies has them and I'm sure others. Get why you can, I'm sure they won't last too long.
Thanks Barry |
RE: Showtime
Hi Mike,
I'm still assembling my Showtime and was wondering what muffler to use on the Evolution 100 since the stock one doesn't have a chance of fitting? Thanks, Cist08o Tom M |

Fun factor and colour scheme should definitely be included. Flying something pretty certainly doesn't hurt! BTW - this is the best plane that I don't own!:D |
RE: Showtime
Yea, it really IS a good looking bird on the ground and in the air.
|
RE: Showtime
if its a 3d or "4d" plane it should have a 2to 1 thrust to weight ratio and that fine ys 110 but there a pain and just wait and see how long they take to repair im just say if its 3d design it for 3 d power

RE: Showtime
Well my showtime made it safe and sound.. Took all day to get here,
box inner and outer was pushed in somewhat... D_m UPS!!! But contents was safe and sound.... No radio gear, This morning it showed both boxes out for delivery at 0645... I think it'll fit in my car:-(.... I think it'll be a bit before I start putting her together... Think I'm may use GP pinned hinges which I have to order:-(...... Anyway she looks Great!!! Whats an easy way to remove decals??? |
RE: Showtime
:)Raideron, congratulations on getting your plane in one piece, or, a, 1 box of pieces, or complete pieces, or partial pieces, well you know what I mean.
Anyways, pretty neat looking isn't it? Decals: belt sander works. Thanks, Barry |
RE: Showtime
Barry:-).... Same thoughts here.... But I'm missing a belt:-) So thinking
S.T. Looks Great!... You finish with yours... |
RE: Showtime
Well my radio gear showed up:-)) ..... Small box, but it was pushed
in also[:@] ....... The "Boss" already caught yesterday's shipment, invoice and the size of the box:-(..... But now she saw that D_m UPS show up with the little box of flight gear...( A day late[:@]) Anyway she says what's that.... For the plane.... Yep... And with a smile I ask.... You saw yesterday's box, and now this.... Which do you think costed more...... She got it right:-)... You gotta Love a smart loving woman!!!... She also gave me another tip... She say's, You know maybe your getting your boxes late and smashed because of that Yak deal..... May make sense:-)))))) Well I'm just admiring the Showtime.... But on a hold to order more parts first... |
RE: Showtime
Greetings,
It looks to be that I am the only one that has lost a Showtime to flutter.....I am only using an OS .91 Surpass, and wasnt at full throttle when the right wind fluttered like I have never seen or heard flutter before! Stripped the servos in both wings, and tore the gear off. Although the hinge gaps were not sealed, I had them tight, and the ailerons were in fine shape. The wing folded right past the end of the wing tube. I am not sure wether or not to bother with another one....I liked it, but I dont want to take a chance at losing another to the same thing, and I have yet to read about anyone else having this problem, so I am hoping its an isolated incident. The servos were Futaba 9252 Digital, but not metal geared, and were basically new and the torque is around 93oz........ Anyone have any flutter with there Showtime? Thanks |
RE: Showtime
Metal geared servos may have helped. Sealing hinge gaps may have too...only takes a few minutes. Did your servos have a mechanical advantage? Was there any slop? What prop were you running and how fast was it going when it fluttered? Were the servos tight in their mounts after the crash (always a good idea to check the glue joints on servo mounts for an ARF).
Sorry about the loss, might wanna try horizon as I have heard they can be helpful in these cases. |
RE: Showtime
metal is your friend
|
RE: Showtime
I thought Green was... Sort of:-)
BR289 Sorry for your problems.... Tell us more, and by all means if nothing else is found let Horizon know about the problem, and let us know..... |
RE: Showtime
The servos are still tight in the wing, and the hinges are as new.....aside from the landing gear ripping out and the front of the cowl cracked in a few places ( I wasnt very high off the ground ), the only damage is the folded wing right past the end of the tube....even the aileron isnt broken, just two stripped servos and the wing.
I wasnt going full throttle, but I had some speed, but nothing ridiculous. I had an APC 15 x6 on it, and was previously ( about 6 or so flights ) using a 15 x 4 on it. This was only the second flight with the 15 x 6...... My friend Chris Maier (an awesome pilot who did the Ultimate 3-D video that has been on the market for the past few months) and knows his stuff, was standing next to me and said there wasnt anything else I could have really done, as I cut the throttle immediately, and damn near landed it without further damage...... I want to build another, and feel this was probably an isolated incedent, but I am a bit reserved because I sure dont want to have this happen again. I wouldnt hesitate if it was because I flew it straight down full throttle, or wrecked it because of pilot error, or whatever... I think if I do build another, I will defiantely seal the gaps, and use metal gear servos, but I am not totally sure that was the problem.... Thanks guys for your input........ |

RE: Showtime
BR289... Since I guess you heard the flutter... I would guess maybe a stripped
servo gear then the wing went???? With those big surfaces, it wouldn't take much slop to cause big damage.... I seen a funtana lose it's wing just after some flutter, hard to tell after.. But he found his control rod broken at the threads.... It's always nice(a little better) to find the cause.... |
RE: Showtime
:)Mounted my elevators today. I did it the stock way including the screw to hold it in. This might be a neat feature to remove the stabalizer someday. I'm gonna give it a go this way, at first anyways. I also opted to go with the stock pushrods. I was going to use carbon fiber but the stock ones are so easy to install I went with them. Anyways, I kinda wanted to see what the weight is pretty much stock. I would only save about 1/4oz with the carbon fiber anyways. I did replace the tires. I went with 3" Dubro "Super Lite" wheels. The weigh .75oz for both of them. The stock are only 2.5" and weigh 2.1ozs. So I get a little bit of savings there. I got the landing gear mounted. I used the Mayhem tailwheel assembly. It saves about 1/4oz but the real advantage is the spring linkage and the smaller tire. I think the stock one is just as good but needs to have a smaller wheel to get the nose higher than the tail. I also mounted the YS tonight. And got the firewall drilled for the throttle cable. I've got the aileron and elevator servos mounted and trimmed out. I'm waiting on the rudder servo to see where initial balance is. I'm working the throttle servo is as I go.
So far the things I don't like are as follows: 1. Tailwheel to high 2. Tires (personal preference, but I like bigger tires (I fly on grass) and the stock ones are just a little bit heavy. I'm leaving the pants off. I do this on all my planes, not a complaint 3. The wing tube seems quite loose in the fiberglass mount. (Does anyone else have that problem?) 4. I don't like the way the screws mount for the hinged surface horns. The screw is loose and the manual (and Mike) state all you need is a little glue and it will be fine. I'm trusting them on this one because I mounted them just like it says. I just don't think it's the best set up 5. The canopy. It has to be glue on and the fit isn't very exact. I hate that. Why can't the canopy come pre glued? The Mayhem does. All I do is get fingerprints all over the dang thing and it never matches the trim and is difficult to install. Wake up you manufacturers. Glue the canopy for us. Things I like and I'm impressed with 1. Unique design. In an era of "Me too" the Showtime at least is unique with the SFGs. I probably won't use them all that much, but it's nice to have them and who knows, maybe I'll really like them. But also they don't force you to choose. They are removeable. Nice touch. 2. Color scheme is nice. No transparent covering!!! Whoever started that, ought to stop it. I like the colors also. I think the color on the bottom ought to be more different but I think it's pretty good. But hey, (shoulda added this to the dislikes) why not like a UCD or a CAP (Chapman) They are the best for different undersides and are by far the easiest to see orientation. Wake up you guys. 3. Quality of hardware and ease of assembly. It's all pretty good. Not the best or lightest stuff but really pretty darn good stuff. 4. Optional rudder servo location. What a great idea!!! And they provide the hardware for both. And either location has the servo mount pre installed. 5. The switch cut out is pre done and only requires us to remove the covering. Nice. 6. Carbon fiber landing gear. And it's predrilled!!! (gotta love it) And I like the axles. They just look more sturdy to me than some I should have the plane done and flying by Saturday. I'll fly it approx 20 times and write kinda a mini review of what I think the plane is like from a intermediate 3D wanta be pilot's prospective. (Others, please do this also so we can get a real idea what the plane is like. Beginners to expert) I hoping the weight with more or less a pretty stock build is in the advertised range of 8-9 lbs. I'm using HiTec HS5625, HS5645 & HS645 servos with a mini HS85 on the throttle. So I have premium (heavy) servos with a YS 110 engine. This will probably put me in the upper weight range but the manufacturer should expect this equipment and it should be accounted for in the weight range. I'm gonna try one the new 16.5 x 5W props especially made for the YS engine. Anyways, that's my update. Thanks, Barry |
RE: Showtime
Barry,
Sounds like the contruction and build for showtime is similar to the H9 260 (which is what I have after I crashed :( my Mayhem). A couple of notes here: 1. Screw on horn: don't worry about it. I have it in a 15 lb airplane and it works just fine. Just be sure to glue it on with epoxy (the epoxy will harden and support the surface of the wood. 2. Canopy: some do like to mount a pilot on their airplane, and this provides them with a way to do that. I personally prefer the weight saving, but different strokes for different folks :). 3. Wing tube: I put a painter's tape on the part of the tube that will slide in the fuse. It won't slide out no matter how hard I try that way :D. HTH Josh |
RE: Showtime
:)Good points BoneDoc.
I never even thought about putting a pilot figure in the canopy. I've just never done it, so I assumed nobody else would either. Dumb on my part. I've quite worrying about the screw, I did epoxy them in and they seem to be holding nice. When I screw the swivel on the screw didn't move and all seems tight so I'm thinking I'm ok, but it just "looks" a little funny. That's a good idea on the wing tube and I'll try it, but I mention it in my report hoping some manufacturers read these forums and can improve. This is an area where they could improve the kit. The Yak was smooth and tight. Thanks. Barry |
