RE: Showtime
I'm using a YS 1.20 and it will swing an APC 17x6 with authority. The 1.40 will be a monster in this plane, should be fun. I got the 16.5x5W about a month ago to use on a .91 AC. I got mine through my LHS. I have not had a chance to try it out as my .91 is acting up. I am at roughly 5,000 ft and I think the prop would work fine in the 1.10. remember that the motor will unload in the air. I find it best to fly a prop instead of using static thrust. I use props that know one else thinks will work, just because it doesnt look good on paper doesnt mean it wont perform in the air. There is only one real test of a prop-bolt it up and fly it.

RE: Showtime
:)Big Barry, Very good point. The 16.5x5W gave virtually the same thrust as the 16x6 but at a lower RPM. Maybe when it unloads in the air it would be better. I know you are at about the same elevation as me. I'm gonna maiden mine tomorrow if the wind will allow it. I'm going with the known variable right now the 16x6 but I felt like the Yak was a little too heavy for the 110 with the 16x6. It will hover fine but pull out is weak especially above 80 degrees. I think part of it with the Yak is that great big cowl. I'm sure it makes a lot of resistance. My Ultra Stick seems to have more pull out and it's nine pounds even. Even the Funtana seems to pull out better. The only difference I can think of is resistance. The Showtime looks more regualar in the cowl area, hopefully that will make it pull out ok. Anyways, I'm impressed with the build on this plane. Very, very nice. I trimmed it out and broke in the engine. I'm ready to fly.
thanks, Barry |

ORIGINAL: Barry Cazier :)Well, too windy to fly tonight, 30+MPH. At least a little windy for me to do a maiden. But I decided to break in the YS and I thought, hey, I wonder what that new 16.5x5W will do for me. So I purchased a digital fish scale and hooked up the plane to my deck and had at it. I wish I hadn't. Here are my pitiful results. Temp - 80 F 16.5x5W = 8600 RPM @ 12lbs 0ozs thrust 16x6 = 9400 RPM @ 12lbs 2 ozs thrust 17x4W = 9700 RPM @ 11lbs 2ozs thrust 16x4W = 9800 RPM @ 11lbs 2 ozs thrust 15x7 = 10100 RPM @ 10lbs 4 ozs thrust What a disappointment. Not even a 1.5:1 ratio. No wonder I having problems getting the Yak to waterfall. Just simply not enough power. Don't know exactly where to go from here. It'll fly the plane fine and will 3D but pull out isn't going to be that great. Maybe back to the Mayhem or the UCD with a 110. Thanks Barry Barry so If you were to choose an engine again which one would you choose for the model? Showtime is finally in Europe I will finally get this plane after careful consideration of alternatives, I can not wait for the EF YAK 54 any more. I did some homework regarding the engine options: 1)YS-110 FZ Weight:730gr (Is that without muffler?) 2)MOKI 135 Weight:820gr + 120 gr BCM Ultra Light Muffler (Longer than YS-110 by 20mm) 3)YS-140 FZ Weight:924gr + weight of slimline pitts style muffler (Longer than YS-110 by 8mm) 4)OS-160 FZ Wieght:925gr + 140 gr BCM Muffler (Shorter than YS by 4.5mm) Note: MOKI 135 turns an APC 16x8 at 9.500 with straight fuel!!!![8D] The only problem is its length, will I have any cowling problems? RE: Showtime
:):D:DMaidened the Showtime this morning. 3 Hours at the field, 5 10-15 minute flights. I was YSed again. The balance of the time was spent starting the YS watching it idle for 18 seconds and then die, adjust, watch it idle for 10 seconds then die, start it again watch it idle for 15 seconds and die, adjust, start...well you get the picture. Ah YS,...Ya love until you hate them. 5 Flights, 5 deadsticks. Never did get it to idle. Will work on it tonight.
But, lets talk about the plane. The YS handled this airplane with ease. I was surprised how much power it had. After my earlier tests about thurst I was worried and in the Yak I felt underpowered but not today. I could hover with ease and fly straight up. The pull out wasn't like YNOT (160) but acceptable. And I really love this plane. The only thing I've flown that is even close to this baby is my UCD46. Wow, what a ball to fly!!!! I could do very tight waterfalls and one time had it just spinning there with no fall whatsoever. Kinda a hover while flipping. This plane flat spins like I want to. I could get it very flat and it would kinda just pinwheel there but would roll out. Need a little more practice or trim or something to do them like the UCD but it will do them. KE was good but not nearly as good as the Yak. Keep in mind I didn't have my SFGs on and won't put them on until I get the YS figured out. Every landing a deadstick, some aren't the best. The ground handling was superb on this plane. I didn't know you could actually turn with the tailwheel. Everyplane I've had the tailwheel was just a decoration and adds weight but this one will steer. I had about 15 MPH winds, no problems, this beauty just cuts through it. In hover it tended to torque roll very fast and I'd lose it after 2 revolutions, but again that's just getting used to the plane. It falls into hover very nicely and as I mentioned pull out was nice, not rocket, but enough. I'm using the 16x6 prop and I have my CG at 7 3/8" after all was said and done. A recheck of my weight gives me 8lbs 12ozs right on the nose. I'm now wondering if the fish scale was at a little angle with thrust ratings, yet maybe 12lbs thrust feel like this. Anyways, just an update. I love this plane, feels like a UCD60 only souped up to fly like a UCD46. It is a thing of beauty and is the first plane since the UCD46 that I really have FUN flying. I wish I could have gotten the YS to run, I would have been calmer and tried more but this baby will fly. Did some very nice rolling circles as well. The easiest I've done by far. Thanks, Barry |
RE: Showtime
:)One more comment. This plane lands easy. If I wanted I could go rearward with the CG but I found it pretty nice at 7 3/8". I did some touch and goes at about 1/4 throttle and they were pretty cool. Into about a 15 MPH wind my other planes would pitch, roll and baloon but this sweetheart just touch down keep moving and lift off again. My real landings were all deadstick and it died each time at about 5 feet off the ground on approach. When the prop would stop it would baloon up to about 8-10 feet and then felt a little tailheavy but seriously, not bad at all. It would land on all three wheels at the same time with slight up elevator. Sweet. I'm really excited about this airplane. This baby flys.
Thanks, Barry |
RE: Showtime
good to hear.. im green with envy.. i have to start all over again..
did you try a harrier to see if you got any rock? |
RE: Showtime
:)Drum, No I'm just learning the harrier, the Yak is the first plane I've been able to do them with and I'm shakey at best but I was actually doing them with the Yak. But with an engine I knew wasn't running right and a brand new airplane I kept everything high and pretty much stuff I'm comfortable doing. Hopefully I'll get to fly again tomorrow or the next day and I'm gonna have a little talk with the YS tonight and see what happens. I'm just a bit forward on my CG from what I was try for, I can never get it just perfect. By the time I locate the battery and then add weight for the mount (balsa) it creeps on me a bit. This time after I was all done it ended up at 7 3/8" right on the money. So I decided to fly it there and see what happens. So far I liked everything I did with the plane. Even the deadsticks were uneventful. What a different flying airplane than my Funtana. Wow. I never had a decent flight with that thing but this plane fits my style, right from the get go. That waterfall hover was amazing. I've never seen a plane do that. And I was expecting to be down on power based on the primitive thrust calculations I did. But the plane didn't seem down on power although I'm not saying I wouldn't like more, it has enough. It could be overpowered, that thing of YNOT's is a rocket. Man I've never seen anything go vertical like that thing did. That would be cool, but I'm pretty satisfied with what mine did. Only my Mayhem seemed to power straight up better. But I was pleasantly surprised. I have Showtime fever. This plane has really fired me up. Like none other I've ever flown. Wow!!!!
Thanks, Barry |
RE: Showtime
Barry... Glad you like your Showtime!!.... Sorry about the Love/Hate
on the YS... Like your pics of your onboard equip... I was going to put the rud. servo in the tail... But I'm not sure now, but I have never installed a pull/pull... But like the guys at the field said.. Gees just put that thing together and fly it:-)) I did get my profile back in the air... and slowly working on installing the 91 in the LCD 46... I'm thinking of getting bigger tanks so I won't run into the same problem:-) Anyway Can't wait to try my S.T... Well if it'll fit in my car:( But it may be a bit... I just got all the parts and the GP pinned hinges (standard) look kinda small, But guess they will work... But now I'm thinking of ordering some Robarts instead... |
RE: Showtime
Just put it on order...:D Pls help me on engine and servo selection. I tend towards YS-110 but I already have a YS-140 FZ. I saw both videos with OS-160 and OS-108. They both fly nice but I don't like that noise...no insult for you 2-cycle guys.:) So what do you think? I'm between 110 and 140.
Also, what about servos? I will go for Hi-Tec metal gear for sure but I don't know whether they will be digital or normal coreless ones. Any advice is more than wellcome. |
RE: Showtime
|
RE: Showtime
I think of those:
- 925MG Ultra Fast Coreless Analog - 945MG High Torque Coreless Analog - 5625MG Ultra Fast Digital - 5645MG High Torque Digital - 5925MG Ultra Fast Digital Coreless - 5945MG High Torque Digital Coreless xx25 will go Ailerons and xx45 on Elevator and Rudder. Final selection depends on budget. By the way what kind of battery capacity will I need in the case I go for digitals? Should I go for 4 cells- 6V? I have never used digital servos, always used traditional high torque coreless with plastic gears.:( Any opinions will be appreciated. |
RE: Showtime
A 5645 is plenty for the rudder....very authoritive..... and I would go 5625 for aileron and elevator. Plenty stong enough and you'll want the speed on those surfaces. That's my personal opionion though.

:)Flew the ST 3 more flights today. Got the YS running tolerable. No deadsticks but more rich than I like but at least it's flying. Really does seem to have enough power. It will pull straight up out of a hover even today at about 84 degrees. I really do love this airplane. Did some pretty good flying and even had one of the club guys snap a picture of me. Dialed in a bit of spoileron and got the flat spins to just pinwheel. The waterfalls just kill me. They are so cool. Just flips over and over on itself. I even tried the harrier but it seemed I had some wing rock, not that stable but that still could just be me. So far I think I can do them better with the Yak. But I'm new at the harrier. Did some KE spins which happens when you rolll out of a flat spin and it will do them nicely also. Knife edges are better with just a little spoileron, no coupling to the left a small amount to the right. Still getting used to the plane but the upline flips, spins, circles etc are just flat fun with this plane.
I'm using these servos and they are plenty strong and no flutter. HS5625 on elevators HS5645 on rudder HS645 on ailerons HS85BB on throttle. The one on my Yak trashed itself in 3 flights or so. So far this one is holding up good. I think the 110 is the perfect engine for this plane. At a lower elevation it would be awesome. At this elevation it is adequate. I use 30% Nitro. After about an hour run time I start loving the YS again. They say you don't have to break them in but I've found they just will not idle until they get a bit of time on them. This plane is just a riot to fly. It doesn't recover from mistakes as quickly as a UCD or Mayhem but I think that "snapiness" is what makes it so aerobatic. Here's a picture from the field Thanks, Barry |
RE: Showtime
:)Forgot to mention I always use 4.8v batteries. I use the Hobbico NMiH 1650mA. I can fly for at least an hour of battery time with no problems. I never recharge at the field so I'm not entirely sure how long I can go but yesterday I flew 5 flights plus a lot of fiddling with the YS and certainly no problems with the battery. My servos are plenty strong with the 4.8v. I use this voltage because the batteries are lighter and I don't get as many jitters as with 6v.
Thanks Barry |
RE: Showtime
:)Raideron. Don't worry about those pinned hinges. Use 30 minute epoxy and you'll be fine. Sure makes a smooth action on the hinges. Glue 1/2 at a time. Glue all the ones in the wing first (and stab) and then let them dry overnight and then glue on the ailerons or elevators. Make certain you dry fit before you glue as generally you will need to enlarge the holes slightly. Use vaseline on the pin area to keep glue away. I put it on with an Xacto knife but you can use a rolling pin if you want. If you install them right, epoxy them good, and make certain they operate smoothly they will hold...At least until they don't.
Thanks Barry |
RE: Showtime
:)Raideron, sorry, but I didn't answer your question on rudder servo pull/pull. This was my second one, first was on the Yak. They are easy to do but the first one is a bit itimidating. This plane balance pretty well for me with the rudder servo. My battery is still ahead of the CG. I could go way back if I want to. For the pull/pull I just went down to the local fishing store and purchased some plastic covered 60lbs leader and some crimps. I made the loops and doubled back through the crimp and crimped it. On the third try I even remembered the shrink tube to finish it off. I used the Dubro hardware with it. It's a cinch to do and I think it gives a little more authority to the rudder and equal in both directions. I like it. And a benefit is I think the lateral balance is better.
Thanks, Barry |
RE: Showtime
Thanks Barry... I already ordered the 312 Robarts... I'll wait and use
them, Part of the reason being that my Aileron center slots were off center from the others... Anyway will see... On the Rudder, I will go with the Pull/Pull.... Thanks again.. |
RE: Showtime
:)Flew the Showtime 3 more flights today. Hot, about 85 degrees but the YS ran like a champ and this plane is a thing of beauty. I need to laterally balance a little closer and do a little more triming on throw length, but I love this plane. With spoilerons I could get the flat spins really flat but could not hold it from falling. I'm certain I won't be able to do a rising flat spin, at least not with the YS. But this is one fun flying aircraft. It is sweet.
Thanks Barry |
RE: Showtime
Hi all,
For you guys with the Showtime already....Is there a pipe tunnel? I was thinking of getting a TT120 two stroke with the manifold and pipe cos here in the UK they are dirt cheap and really powerful. Can't really afford another 4 stroke at the mo Thanks Simon |
RE: Showtime
:)Collin M. No pipe tunnel. I think the TT120 would fly the heck out of this plane but you're probably gonna have a muffler sticking out and running down the side, unless of course you go with a pitts style.
Thanks Barry |
RE: Showtime
Thanks Barry,
Just as I thought. Shame really Might have to get another 2 stroke instead, maybe an ASP 108 or 120. Or maybe the new ASP 180 four stroke:D Decisions decisions Simon |
RE: Showtime
:)Flew the ST with the SFGs for the first time today. Made the airplane much "crisper" in response and easier to do some stunts but, surprising a little more difficult to KE. The KE got the nose so high I had to keep slowing the throttle down until it would finally fall out. But hover was easier, and flatspins very impressive with them on. Waterfalls were easier to keep straight and vertical and nicely down with them on. Rolling circles became easier for some reason. They are still such a novelty that I need to practice more to get used to them and to really even find out fully what they are about. But it made the plane really responsive.
Landing was scary because you only have about 1" clearance but I didn't have any problems, just worry. But it was calm today. Maybe with a little wind... Anyways, still extremely impressed with this airplane, especially with the SFGs. Thanks Barry |
RE: Showtime
:)One other thing I did today. We had a club fly in today and there was a lot of people there, at least for us (22). Anyways one of the local engineering types was helping me with the thrust measurements. I had it hooked to the plane in such a way that it wasn't measuring full pull. With his help I did two of my planes again. With 16x6 props on a YS 110 I was able to get 13lbs 0ozs on the UCD and 13lbs 4 ozs on the Showtime. Before the way I was measuring I got only 12lbs 2 ozs. He assures me this is a more accurate way to do the test. I did every airplane that was there today. It's kinda neat info to obtain. This was at about 82 degrees and at 4800' elevation and with running settings rather than peaked RPM. I feel much much better about that. Still not 15lbs like some are getting but I fully attribute that to the elevation. And I do seem to have good pull out. The UCD only had about 8 minutes of run time on it, so it might improve, especially if I'm able to lean a bit more.
Seanychen...If you read this, will you answer a question. Did you have to add right thrust to your UCD after you added the 110? I preestly have about 2 degrees but feel like I should probably add a bid more. Did you? Thanks, Barry |
RE: Showtime
flew today and MAN i miss my showtime:( maybee if 250 people here on rcu will send me a $1 i can get a new one faster[sm=lol.gif]. hey its tax deductable!
