Stinger 2

Hey CARS, you are making progress! It was a simple 2-stroke that they suggested removing the head (for cowling measurements) on!!! Well you seem to be totally undaunted about pulling the head off'n that 4-stroker anyway.....
Good time to re-adust those valves now anyway, right?
On Mauk's maiden flight, way to go! Fun plane hun? You'll be greasing in every single landing now with the Stinger, just like in our dreams.

Not a problem removing the head on the 70 II, very simple, I run the engine after I fitted the cow then when I took it back to the table that's when I notice a "O" ring on the table, I was going to fast, now I wait for the "O" rings and I get a chance to finish the rest of it, CG, reposition a charging jack and a few other things [8D]

It looks like the RC gods are giving me a break today, I went back to work on the Stinger II and when I was looking into the valve cover resting holes I saw the missing O ring in there, funny thing is that I went to Home Depot last night to find me an O ring, I found one but a little too thick no problem I said and took it home, this morning I fix it so it would fit in there ( pictures ) and after working on it it did, just fine like to original then I got to work on the engine and there is where I found the missing O ring. To say the least the engine is back togather and the airplane is completed including the stikers and CG and I have now a set of O rings on the way. Oh well I will keep them as back ups I guest.
Speaking of CG, to get it to balance at the CG point I added 1 1/2 onces of ballast at the back under and inside the fuse.
The maident flight may happen tomorrow Saturday in the afternoon, I have a game of Football to attend to then I will go flying
On pic 1 the push rod covers with O rings [:-]
2 you can see the throttle push rod bend because the throttle arm been to close to the fire wall and how close is the engine from the fire wall.
3 grinding the O ring
4 engine head.
5 engine with rod covers installed.
6 the clearence between the cowl and spinner.

CARSII, looking good! I love those OS 70 Surpass II's. Currently have them in three planes and they run like a top. None of them are in a plane as small as the Stinger II, so you are gonna have speed, speed, speed. Glad you got the engine shoe horned in there to get the right spinner clearance. I had the same engine as an option, but seeing that challenge before me helped me decide to go with the YS 63, which I am happy with...nice power too. Have fun on the maiden today. I can hardly wait to fly mine again! BTW I went with 50 expo to start with on the three flying surfaces, to soften them up around center. Worked good for the first flight. Plane was on rails. Jon

It was supposed to rain but didn't, so I went to fly this AM...it was about 42F and 10mph crosswind across our runway. Still had fun and got in 3 flights. I increased my expo to -60% and might go to -70% for still softer feel around center stick. Many of my planes are set for -60% to -70% expo. Mine has a little coupling when right rudder is applied in left KE...the plane wants to roll out a little, so I mixed in some aileron to hold the KE. Funny how it doesn't have that coupling in right KE. Anyone notice if their wings sit perfectly flat when on the plane? My wings have a little anhedral when they are bolted on tight. Oh well, it will fly better inverted, lol. Jon

I maidened my new Stinger II a couple of weeks ago. OS .55ax with Bison Pitts muffler, would only idle about 8 seconds and die. Went out this past week and got in two more flights. Switched from an os 8 plug to an os 6. idle much better. I am running a little on the rich side, but this thing screams! I am really excited with the way this plane flys. Awesome! Smokin top speed, then cruise around at 1/4 throttle. Lands easy! The last time I got this excited with a plane was when I switched from my trainer to a GP Big Stik. Now my big stik is my warm up plane and my Stinger II is my go to plane. I think I will buy another one just to have it in reserve. This plane is a blast!

maukaonyx, my Stinger II also appears to have a little anhedral, but I think it might be optical illusion because of the shape of the fuse at the wing joint. If I place the plane on the becnch, the wings are the same height from the bench all the way across. The guys at the field even thought it has anhedral. At any rate, I will leave things as they are because this plane can do any maneuver I can handle and then some. I even had it in a hover for a very short time LOL. Thanks for the tip on the expo. My ailerons are very sensitive around center stick. I will give your expo settings a try.

Copy on the increase of Expo Jon.
My trip to the field was late today, this was after the Football game ( my kid was playing ) they beat the oposition 14-0 with a season score of 8-2.
Again like with my Rvolver no go on the first trip to the field [:@], engine did not wanted to idel and even though the engine is new/used ( you see that on the previous pictures ) the berings are very noisy, the previous owner put it away with fuel in it and it did its job after not been use for a year or two.
New berings on the way (Boca B.) I will also rune it with a 14/6 the prop should keep her at a decent speed

Mauka, I think the camera lens and angle is causing the anhedral look. With a straight wing tube I don't think it could actually be there.....
You guys are having way too much fun with your Stingers already! You'll love the way every landing is a perfect 10 !!!

Ernie, you are right on the optical illusion, although I see it with my own eyes, not through a camera lens. I measured to the wing from the bench and the wing seems to be level at the LE at both the tips and the root. Very weird illusion. Jon

So, I went digging into my engine and this is what I found, I had a feeling because of the history of the engine and the color of the oil [:@].
Yeap! he put it away for a long time without removing the left over fuel [:-], no problem, the new berings will be here by Thursday the lates, just in time for the weekend and I added a mini glow driver to keep and make the engine idel very slowwwww [&:]

Hey CARRS good thing you weren't afraid to tear into that engine! I bet you really tore things up when you were a kid! ha
How does your mini glow driver work? You don't want any voltage going to the plug at all except for very low throttle settings.
Keep us posted!

Hey man, I'm still a kid and yes, I used to tore things a part all the time and some times I wasn't that successful putting them back togather [:'(], Now days I'm a little better on puting things back the way they were
The micro glow works the way you discribe it, one of the fetures is that you can set the throttle point where it stops from glowing the plug, I usually set it around 2/10 or two lines from the bottom up on the throttle stick, when you pass that point it stops glowing the glow plug and when you come down to that point again it starts glowing the plug, it has a reverse mode ( for diferent radios set up ) it also has a remote light that you can mount on the panel ( like my P-47 ) to show when it is on, when the engine is off and the airplane is on the throttle stick is set to all the way open to keep it off just in case someone has the tentation of touching the prop, if you walk away and forget to turn the airplane off it will go to dormant mode by turning itself off, cool gadget hey?
I got it from 42 Porcents Products in Sacramento ( I lived there for 9 years and the owner is a member of our club there ) I will be picking up another unit from him ( I took this one from my P-47 ) and a battery pack for my Futaba 9C next week, it comes ready to install with battery and all conectors or any way or connectors you want he has it all, you can call him and ask to custom make it for your needs with the connectors of you choise, i always do that, best part of all he will suport his producs for a long, long time.

I think we need to get a petition going for Great Planes to come out with a larger Stinger II! This little airplane is a blast, but I would like to see GP come out with a bigger version, built to the same quality as the .46 size. I am really excited about this airplane. Goes together easy,(well, except for installing the cowl...that was kind of a pain) flies great, and lands super easy.

G. Barber, just curious, what is your preference for covering on the ARF's? My Stinger covering was perfect and I think it was Oracover or whatever. I just got a Razor 3D and it is covered with Monokote...... and it had so many terrible wrinkles in it - took me at least 2 hours to get most of the wrinkles ironed out. I don't think they are able to handle the rather stiff Monokote quickly and as well in the factories?

Ernie, you were lucky with your Stinger then, because mine was full of wrinkles and I spent a couple hours to get it down and shrunk. Actually there are some bad ones on wood that are still there, stuck down but still wrinkly, and I went at it with lots of heat. Maybe it had to do with being shipped to the great PNW with our high humidity...no can't be since you are in WA and I am in OR, and you had a perfect one and I had a wrinkly one. Jon

My Stinger II arrived with damage to the top of the left wing from crush damage to the top of the box from UPS (United Plane Smashers). There is not much protection between the wings and the top of the box. Rather than going through the hoops and hurdles with a UPS claim, I cut the white covering, repaired the ribs, and patched it with monokote. The fuselage covering was perfect. Not a wrinkle.

G. Barber, I vote for a 1.20 size. I don't do big gassers (not because I don't want to, but the expense and learning curve of gas engine set-up etc.) 1.20 size works for me as far as size. GP should do what Lanier did...5 sizes to fit every need!

@ Ernie,
The Stinger II is covered in MonoKote, and mine came with just a few minor wrinkles that tightened up easily. I like both MonoKote and Ultra Cote.
@trainerjock,
5 sizes would be really cool! If they had to choose only one, I would vote for 1.20 size myself. There are a lot of economical gassers on the market in the 20-30 cc size that would work well.
A DLE 20 will run you $270.00 plus shipping from Tower, and a DLE 30 runs $320.00. An O.S. 1.20 2-stroke goes for $280.00 with a muffler - I like O.S. engines, but the bigger 2-strokes use a lot more fuel than comparible gassers, and the gasser will not slime your engine like a glow engine.
A non-pumped O.S. 1.20 Surpass costs $415.00, and a Magnum 1.20 4-stroke goes for $270.00.
Now, I love the sound and smell of gas engines, plus fuel is cheaper and there is less field support equipment needed. But this is just MY opinion...

60 size has been good for me. And I love my OS engines. The OS .55ax in my Stinger II is an awesome combo! Flies just fast enough to get my knees knockin'!
Sometimes I choke on the price of glow fuel, but I can live with it for the simplicity of 2 strokes. I don't mind the glow slime so much...kinda like giving your horse a good rub down after a ride.
