Hangar 9 Twist 3D

Good show dutch. My first nutso plane I flew was my Pizazz. My experience up to then was with my trainers and a 4 star. It jumped around all over and when I finally landed it safely, I felt just like you do. You did a good job by bringing it home in good health.

Dutch,
Congratulations on the successful maiden of your Twist. If you like slow flight you may want to consider switching to a a 12.25x3.75 prop. I think that is what the guys are using for more 3d style flight. Maybe one of the .46 guys can chime in and confirm what is the proper sized 3d prop for the .46. I know that when I went to a higher diameter and lower pitch prop on my .61 (12x8 to 14x4) it really changed the flight characteristic for the better. My Twist doesn't like speed anyway with those huge control surfaces and extreme throws I have programmed in. You should be able to hover no problem witht the proper prop on that OS .46. Welcome to the club!

Hey Dutch,,, Congrats, Glad you finally got to experience what all the hype is about, you will love this plane even more everytime you send her up.
Prop,,,,,,I can hope someone brings a camera tomorrow to the field, if not the pic will have to wait until next week. one of these days I will hopefully get one myself, hmmmmmm new engine
,,,new camera,
I think you know where that is going.[&o]

Thanks so much guys.
Yeah...I am so exited about the Twist I can not see straight
What an awesome plane to fly guys.....WHEWWW!!
Adam....yeah..about the prop....I have one of these props you mentioned. Is that the one to put on the plane??
I am not into speed, but love to slow-fly
I'm sure I have lots of questions about the Twist and how-to's...so be prepaired for my questions

Needless to say...you know I'll be dreaming about the maiden this night...what an experience

Congrats on the maiden.
I have the OS 46 AX on my twist and use the 12 x 4 because the lhs I go to didnt have the 12.25 x 3.75 but eather will help slow the twist down very nice and I still had unlimited vertical. Just now getting brave enough to start the 3d stuff had used the twist for fun flys mostly.

dutchalltheway,
I have a TT 46 Pro with a 12.25 X 3.75 prop and have tons of fun with mine. I'm 48 and have been in and out of this hobby since I was a teen and never thought I would improve my flying skills but the Twist has been the perfect platform for me to improve. A 60 would probably be better but adds weight. Both setups have their advantages. This is my first Twist and I haven't crashed yet and I've done spins, snaps, rolled, hovered and more. Just keep it 2 or 3 mistakes high. Have fun!

You do have to wonder though,,[sm=idea.gif] Such a good flying plane, I was thinking of putting a pusher prop on mine to see if I could fly it backwards then hovering would look great,, cause it would appear to be nose diving into the ground, I tell you that would be one way thats a sure blast to cut the lawn at our field, or come to think of it it would be great to cut any lawn with and think of the practice you would get in hovering

Maybe I was near the glue bottle too long last evening,[sm=bananahead.gif] But its flying time now,,,, Bye bye

Thanks for the friendly replies guys
I've put a couple of the 12.25 x 3.75 props on my wishlist. I only have one of these in my prop stash, so can use a few in stock
When I crashed the Nexstar, I removed the engine and one of my buddies cleaned if thoroughly for me, since some dirt had gone in the carb. As of now, I fly with a carb protector, that will keep the dirt and such out of the carb, just in case I make another crash or poor landing
I love my O.S engine...it is sooo reliable...awesome. Keeps it's tune very well. fires up in a blink of an eye.
I probably will keep sweating for a while, everytime I hit that throttle and see my yellow baby crawl to the sky. She is so capable, and I am still, and probably always will be....LEARNING!!
Thank goodness for the Flight Simulator...that has taught me so much!!Even the Flight Instructor was impressed with my skills. I was considered solo within 2 days of flight sessions.
The Twist looks so pretty against the pale blue sky when flying

I am finishing my Katana V2 46 size, with an O.S. Surpass 70 engine. Talking about flying acrobatics
...but the Twist will always be part of my collection. Hangar 9 better keep producing this baby

It is one sweet airplane, with capabillities far beyond my skills, so she will be challenging me for a long time

TimC is very right...check the U-shape elevator brace....Mine was slightly bent and since the Twist was my 1st ARF, an "experienced" builder demonstrated me how to build an ARF. He forgot to check this elevator brace and now my elevator is slightly bent. It is minor, and obviously does not effect my baby's flight performance, but of course you always try to build the plane PERFECT!!
So follow Tim's advice...CHECK the brace before you mount it
Also, when placing the tank in the fuselage....do not wrap it too tight in foam when installing the tank!!!! I had air bubbles in the fuel line when running 2 different engines, and it took us few weeks to find out the problem!!!
Just snug...that's all!! and then secure the back with a popsickle stick or so
The engine caused ever so slight vibration enough to cause the fuel to foam!!
...just my .02

It was a beautiful day for flying,,,,,,,, There were many flat spins today, it was about 85 degrees this morning so we baked in the sun, but there was also a nice 15 mph breeze, after last week being in the hundreds we welcomed today with open arms,,,,
6 flyers today and I even gave my wife of 15 years her first flying lesson, she did awesome, one corsair smashed straight into the ground, completely buried the nice 4 stroke, all we could see was the very back cooling fins, it can be repaired though, gotta love kits....
The twist of course was a stunning as usual, I even tied a dog fighting streamer to her landing gear and challenged all, nobody even came close, another friend brought 2 smokers, he taped one on his landing gear I lit it up and he took off, nothing was happening so he landed his plane and of course the smoke kicked in, we all yelled GO GO GO, he took right back off and it worked great, so another friend did the same, a couple of guys had some engine problems we couldn't resolve, so they were grounded but all in all 5 hours of bliss in the sky, I even dropped 2 parachuter's today from my Kadet, but the winds took those chutes very far away.
How I say,,, How???????? can you not like this hobby... Now that my wife seems almost addicted, I may get in even more flying a week.....the ideas keep rolling in over here..........
Thats the flight report for this week, off to the track tomorrow to win more hobby money, or,,,,, I'll have a longer wait for that new motor I've been needing..... nothing seems to matter as long as I have a running Twist......

Way to go WALD!!
It is one healthy addiction isn't it??
Great to hear you have so much fun....I know the feeling
Cool that your girl is getting into the hobby. I am trying to get my girl to fly too....would be nice to see more girs at the field flying.
We'll see if I get her to start flying..so far she is super-supportive towards my new hobby
..in fact...she bought the Twist for me...
..and yes....I am spoiled..but I KNOW I am!!!

This month, I am getting a work bench, so I have a place to work on my planes and store all my lil' baggies with connectors, servo extensions, glow plugs...yadayadayada......
Finally a place to start building my Funtana X50......

Hey Waldo and others,
Good to here you had a great time. I finally got to the field about 5 PM and got 3 flights in before going home. My Twist is still in need of repair so the Tiger II went to the field with me. It will snap, roll, rudder turn, loop and fly inverted but spins like a rock. I've got to get my Twist back together but I keep getting distracted by the H9 Tribute 36 I bought. It's like a profile Twist with a few other extras. I think I will put a TT 46 Pro on it and see if it will hover.
I took my 6 YO son with me to the field in hopes that the bug will bite him. He has showed some interest lately so I'm getting my Senior Telemaster back in shape so he can give it a try. I really need to get another flight simulator but the last one I had ran in DOS with 16 bit color and I know zero about the new ones.

Propspinner, I use AeroFly Pro Deluxe, and have an absolute ball with it
I would highly recommend this Sim. After many hours of practicing on the Sim, it took me very few hours to become solo on the field with the real deal
There is a dedicated forum for AFPD...check it out

Sounds like some great flying this weekend guys. I am on vacation but managed to sneak an electric in with the luggage. You guys have inspired me, I am going to get up early and go flying tommorow morning. There is a field near the hotel we are staying at tonight in the Black Hills.

All I flew this weekend was my sim. I too am a supporter of AFPD... I've been flying it for nearly two years now.

Ghee,,, Nice shots on the sim,,,, I've been looking at sims for quite a few years now, just haven't wanted to spend the cash not really seeing what the graphics were and not really getting to much feedback on them, But I definitely have to get one, right now I use Microsofts century of flight as a sim, I've been flying those sims for about 11 years now, I started with the 95 version. Also Janes F-15 sim is pretty realistic looking, not an RC by any means, but serious fun to fly. and you get to shoot at things....
Adam, thats great about smuggling the plane in with the luggage,,Way to go,,,, have fun out there on Vaca.
Dutch,, yes getting the woman to enjoy this hobby is a definite plus for me, we do everything together already, I was able to hook her on golf on our Honeymoon, now every anniversary, we just have to go golfing says she,, Yes I am a very very lucky man, the key to her liking golfing was letting her drive the golf buggy all day, but she also did damn good. now she kicks my butt on the course, so its even a great challenge, I knew if she ever came to the field and I put a box in her hand she would love it, if she wasn't intiminated,,, so I put the box in her hand with the Sig Kadet gliding the skys, and she did great, Huge Huge Huge factor in her liking to fly, If it was too hard for her to control she might not have liked it, but she seems to have a natural touch to it, all I had to do was give her commands for about 2 minutes of flight, made 1 correction for her, and then she flew until the tank ran dry,, about 12 minutes,,, I was very impressed, Now I see she has her eye on my Twist,,,, with my luck she'll be the one to cut my streamer soon and I will lose my title, [X(] I say,,,, let the games begin

You can usually find them on sale on RC Groups "for sale" forums pretty cheap.... used most of the time, but in "like new" condition for around $60-$130 depending on version. I got the Deluxe version of Aerofly Professional with the USB controller for $125 but that was a steal.
I would recommend either version that you can get at a good deal. I flew the non-deluxe version for 1 1/2 years before upgrading to Deluxe. There's some difference in the new one... graphics, new[better] planes, new[better] sceneries, flight physics, etc.

Well I went and put a new post on RCU and who answers me back but TimC, I should have just started here to begin with, LOL Anyway here was my post.
a friend of mine just bought an old trainer plane hanging on the ceiling it came with an OS 60 FP, this motor was working great,,,, I'm talking 1 flip she's running, it was put on a 40 sized trainer and cooks this plane along no problem.
The problem......... My friend,, very new to the hobby,,, 3rd week,,,decided to clean his motor after a dead stick landing into the high weeds and had tangled a bit with some dirt and grass, nothing major, but as he was cleaning,,, he touched, or should I say Turned the forbidden factory air screw when the engine wasn't running like he remembered, My fault really, everyone I train the very first thing I tell them is to never touch that air screw, his motor was running awesome right from the first time out with it, so I never mentioned it,, thinking he wouldn't touch anything yet with out me being there,,, I was wrong... we have no manual and I'm sure now that I know he turned it, we can get it figured out, but it would be a little quicker if someone knew the settings for this screw, Fully closed,, a half turn out ?? 1 1/2 turns out?? anyone with a little info on this would be very helpful...
Once again this Thread has proved to be the absolute best thread on the site,,,, Thanks kids..

If he just "touched it" then hopefully it shouldn't be too far out of whack. The best thing to do is try and tune it back in with small changes.
I would recommend starting up the engine, get it warmed up, then throttle back to 1/3 throttle or less. With the engine running, point the plane up 90 degrees...if the engine takes a while (5 or more seconds) to speed up it's a little too rich and if it stops running it's too lean (it's always better to be rich than lean). If the engine is lean turn the engine off, turn the screw in just a hair, then restart the engine and check it again. If it's too rich do the same thing, but turn the screw out instead of in.
You can also use the pinch test (pinch the fuel tubing near the fuel inlet on the carb) at low throttle to check the tuning. For either the "pitch test" or the "pinch test" the engine should speed up a little before dropping down or quitting. You eventually want to get it to the point that it speeds up after just 2-3 seconds. If it just dies immediately then it's too lean and can damage the engine. The last thing you should do after you get the airbleed screw dialed in is adjust the high speed needle.
My friend and I have the same engine and I used this process to get his engine tuned in this weekend. The airbleed screw is not something you should be afraid of.
Good luck
Dave

Thanks Db,
yeah we tried the Slightly turn the screw in and out, but nothing seemed to work, I think he turned it more then he thought he did, and it almost feels like a secondary problem may be occurring, Which is probably the reason he touched it to begin with, so I told him to change out all his fuel lines this week, and he told me the Fuel tank cap was originally glued on cause the screw was stripped out of the plastic, so he is going to take care of all that first, then we will mess with the air screw again.
I don't fear the air screw at all, but if it doesn't need to be messed with, I don't, Its usually the last resort, however,, I've had to replace the air screw on my 70 4 stroke twice now because of 2 hard crashes that cracked the carb and busted off the needle valve casing, with the factory set specs to go by, I had to do no tuning at all, I just set it at home when I rebuilt the plane, took her to the field and she fired right up, ,,,,Love OS,,,, it runs perfectly.
so to any beginner pilots with no engine experience, I let them know not to mess with it at all, unless they are looking to become an expert. after all,, you have to learn somehow, I did.

Waldo,
I probably have a 40 FP manual somewhere if it is important I could scan it in at work and e-mail it to you. Otherwise there are manuals at [link=http://www.osengines.com/manuals/index.html]O.S.[/link] that have air bleed carbs in them that can't be much different. Seems like I remember something about putting a straight pin in that hole and adjusting the screw down for a starting point. I think all that screw does is keep the engine from loading up with fuel while idling. Of course I'm one of those dummies who you read about in the engine forums who can't adjust a Super Tigre carb but I can find stuff in that mess I call a shop. Ya want I should go look for that manual. I'm just on nanny duty tonight while my wife is at work so can't go anywhere (like to the field) and would just love an excuse to go to my shop!

OK Waldo,
Ya know who your buddy is now! I went to the basement to my shop an found the FP manual and compaired it to the LA manual on the O.S. website and the flowcharts are the same on how to adjust the carb. [link=http://www.osengines.com/manuals/40-46-65la-manual.pdf]Here's the link.[/link]
P.S. My Twist is back together!

Thanks Prop,
Yes I have seen the LA Manual,, Thank you,,,,, I even looked at my own manuals I have about 7 of them, I even went to an OS site and looked through the Old OS Motors page, there is a site where you can go and see if you have any of the older models you might be willing to trade in for a newer model, I have that link at home if anyone wants to look at it. I may have picked it up from here back a few hundred threads ago actually.
But all will tell this weekend when we get back together again, We probably would have had it figured out last weekend Had He told me he turned the screw a little earlier in the day rather then just before the end of the day, but as long as we had a week, I thought I'd do a little research, I don't know why I even thought of starting a new thread about it, when all My answers to everything have been answered right here,,,, always,,,,, You guys are all the best as far as I'm concerned, it is an Honor and privilege to know you all, And,,, your all Twist lovers, does it get any better than this???? I think not...
