LANIER EDGE 1.20 CG PROBLEM
#1
I have just completed a Lanier Edge 540T 1.20. I am using an OS 160 with a Bisson Pitts Muffler. I would like some feedback on the suggested CG of 4.0 to 4.75" from the leading edge at the fuselage. I chose not to mount the elevator servos in the tail, as suggested in the manual and installed two servos in the fuselage with carbon fiber rods crossed to control each half. I also have a pull-pull setup for the rudder. The installation turned out better then expected. The problem that I am having is that I will need to add almost 14 oz to the front behind the firewall to get the recommended CG even with my battery(1100 mAh) and the throttle servo also located behind the firewall. I would like to hear from some others concerning their setup with this plane.

I've built a few of those. Keep piling the nose weight on until you get it balanced, they build really tail heavy. Once you get it flying and familiar with it you can start peeling some weight off the nose.

I had the same problem with mine. The closest I got my CG was 5" from the leading edge. That was where I started & thats where I left it. I could not have asked for a better flying plane. The balance turned out so netural that when you cut the throttle the plane wouldnt drop nose or tail until it completly quit flying. Inverted flight is completly hands off, into the wind it would climb! I programed about 20% expo on low rate for the down elevator because you actually have to give it a little on landing if there is any breeze at all. If the darn thing wasnt so heavy I think it would be the greatest plane I ever owned.

I am adding some pics of my build. We have added wing bolts at the fuselage instead of the bolts through the wings. Also, note that we built a box and attached it to the bottom behind the pitts muffler for the required weight to balance at the recommended CG. This way we can adjust the weight with the hatch on the added box.

Yup, unfortunately, this particular kit does build tail heavy. Having a personal dislike for having to add "dead" weight to planes, after I read about the tail-heavy nature of the plane, I just decided to use a larger (heavier) engine up front. I put my trusty ST 3250 on mine! Given the bigger engine, I also doubled the firewall. With this set-up, I was still able to put my elevator servos in the tail, though my rudder servo (set up for Pull-Pull) is mounted under the wing. With my battery pack up by the firewall, the CG fell right into the recommended range, and it flies great!
Love this plane!

This ARF does build tail heavy due to the increased length, almost 1.5" in the rear turtle deck area as compared to other manufacturers planes. When you look at the overall length of the plane it almost resembles a pattern plane from the cockpit back.
I am adding some additional pics of the fuselage wing bolts that were added. I simply went to the hardware store and purchased some toilet seat bolts and cut the heads off, then mark and drill your holes in the fuselage, next glue/epoxy the bolts to the wing. I would also like to encourage other builders to show their tips for better building solutions. Also, please show us any other photos of the Lanier Edge 540T build.

Could you further your procedure for gluing in the wing bolts on the wings, looks like a neat idea, need to know how you secured your bolts to the wings ?? thanks Bruce

Just wondering how is the performance with the your motor , wondering what the total weight is with ign and batt ect , nice looking set up. Also where is the best distrubutor for Mvvs motors. Is it dependable just wondering your opinion i guess over all on the motor.?

Bruce,
We cut the heads off of the bolts and then epoxied the studs into the wing at the marked locations. I believe you could also secure the bolts to the wing using Gorilla Glue which will expand slightly to fill all the voids. It turned out to be an easy install. Hope this helps.

Flew my Edge yesterday with the r/c showcase 1.8 up front the plane is set at 5and 1/2 inches back and it was very touchey on the elevator at this c/g. Will add some more lead and try it again tomorrow. Other than that it flies very well , actually had a heck of time landing it because of the c/g setting. I even had some expo dialed in to elevator. The 1.8 hauls it with authority for sure.

I saw in the marketplace that U R selling this plane.. DON'T DO IT!!!!! This is the best flying plane I have ever had!! It will fly well with the CG aft of recomended.. I have all three servos mounted in the tail, with a heavier Moki 210 up front.. I'm not sure how many inches back from the leading edge my CG is, but with the hatck off, it balances from the wing tube.. The extra long tail moment and the oversized horizontal stab allow the plane to fly with the cg back.. Mine tracks straight and true, with very little down elevator input for inverted flight.. It is a perfect IMAC plane!! It also 3Ds very well! very solid harriers, and easy torque rolls! The only thing it won't do is Wall.. It just flies on through.. Mine weighs 14 lbs.. a little haevy, but that's the Moki!!! It may be on the heavy side, but it flies so good, you would think it weighed 10 lbs!! It doesn't act like it's oerweight!
I'm certain that your plane weighs less than mine, even with a little lead up front! Don't pass this plane up!! It's not a pig!!

Wow i cant figure out why mine flew tail heavy and very touchy on elevator then i had my cg just at 5 and 1/2 inches back from leading edge which is right in the wing tube area. I will let you know how she does today later with it around 5 inches back. I would like to know also where did you mount your servo for rudder in the rear part of fuse, i was thinking of mounting it on bottom of fuse ?? thanks for your reply captaincliffhan.

I just cut an other hole right below the elevator servo on the right side of the fuse.. Make sure you have enough expo on the elevator! Everybody that flies mine loves it!!

What prop are you using on your Moki 2.10? Also, maybe I missed it, where does yours balance? It was wonderfull to see a quarter scale hover like that, nice piece af flying. I'm just getting back in the hobby after 20+ years away. Everybody tells me that 1/4 scale just not right for 3d/freestyle. My budget limits me to 1/4 scale, you have given me hope. Thanks!!
