WOW What a great plane. I flew mine this weekend for the first time. I use a Saito 1.80 and had to add ZERO weight!! It balanced perfectly without even installing the weight box. This is a gentle airplane that flys beautifully. It went together easily, and I am totally impressed. I used 4 servos in the wing, I know it is not scale, but it flys great, so I wont "Fix" it. Barbie fits perfectly in the rear cockpit, and looks much better than the bobsey twins that came with the airplane.

Good luck. If anyone is close, I will be glad to help.

Looks great. Is barbie a little tall? Or is she setting on something?[:-][:-]

I am not getting mine until next week, but I was just curious. Are the bottom and top wings both removable for transport and storage? Or does the bottom wing stay on?

They are both removeable....a spec ial handle is provided to carry.

Down load the manual from www.greatplanes.com

It will give a better idea on the construction.

Reference page#17, item #4 (instead of 1-3/8 from the rear of the aileron, change it to 7/8")
this will stop the binding...hope this helps

Yea she is tall. Her legs were not cut off. That only makes her hair blow in the wind. She is clothed however.

Thanks

this is a gentle plane.

Good luck

How did you do that? I have read a lot of other post of guys needing a lot of nose weight, except for most of the G26 guys that seem to get it done without nose weight. I installing a lightened G26 in mine. My not get any good flying weather till spring. If I remember correctly the Stearman was flow from the rear seat, and the passenger was in front. that would mean your Srearman is flown by an Amazon blond chick. Cool idea.

A lot of the posts that I have seen are using Saito 1.00. This engine only weighs 19 oz while the 1.80 weighs 31oz. The G26 weighs 53 oz. I guess the extra weight with the Saito 1.80 gave it the necessary nose weight to keep it balanced. I, like yourself, was shocked because of the weight box that you have to build within the ARF. I was expecting it to be extremely tail heavy, thus needing to add the dead weight.

Shocking as it may sound, it balanced perfectly. It flew as if it balanced perfectly as well. It acts as if it is a tiny bit tail heavy, but not enough to add dead weight to the plane. In fact, the CG on my plane allows it to flat spin. When I put smoke on it, it will be even more pleasureable.

If any of you are thinking of getting this kit, or if you have already purchased it, GREAT CHOICE. It is a beautiful plane that flys just as well as it looks.

Keep it in the sky!!

My G26 is at the RCignition shop right now getting a lightening and ignition job, so I can't compare weights yet.
My G26 with the motor mount and stock muffler weighs 65 oz.
My Saito 180 with Hangar 9 motor mounts weighs 40 oz. And I carry 22 oz of fuel at takeoff.
I have already got an Abell mufffler for the G26, it is several oz, less the stock one, and I think the G26 should be around 10 oz. less including the ign battery. I plan to carry 10 oz of gas. So if I am estimating correctly my takeoff weight should be about the same with either engine.
I am pretty sure I will use the G26 here because the big SAITO has found a happy home on the ULTRA STICK LITE.

My brother just recieved an evolution 1.00. He put it in a Funtana 90 and loves it. He did mention that it was not an engine that you can run "right out of the box" as advertised. He did some tweaking and it runs fine. You may need more power for this stearman. It is a 14 to 15 pound plane when all is said and done. Let us know how it turns out though.

I just set up my ailerons slaving the upper ones. I have less than 1/8" difference in throws and the up and down throws are equal. I put the lower control horn at 7/8" from the trailing edge TO the base of the control horn. Same for the top aileron. Now comes the difference. Mount the lower control horn with the linkage holes to the front. I cut off all but the bottom hole and contoured the horn for clearance. I get 1-1/4" throw with no binding. 1-1/4" throw on the bottom is 1-1/8" throw on the top. Use 4-40 metal clevises and lock nuts everywhere. Slicone tubing too. I also used 2-56 machine screws through the ailerons for a more secure mounting method. (Personal preference)

Has anyone tried an OS 91 FX? I am not looking to hover, but I do want a decent climb out. But I can get one at my LHS for 169.00. I mainly want loops, rolls, and stalls and some smoke. Thanks

jhogie31,

Missed the maiden flight(s) of your Stearman because I was on business in AL. Am looking forward to see it performing!! Also, would like to compare, side-by-side, with my 'ole' Midwest Super Stearman. Weather allowing are you gonna fly this weekend.....or going deer hunting instead?

Hey Tony,
It flew great. Large Airplane. I am in the woods till Sunday. I will be at the field probably Late morning Sunday. I am off next week, and will try to fly, weather permitting, on Monday. See ya there.

You need toget one of these. All of the fear mongers were wrong. It is a gentle, easy to land airplane. Lands like the Funtana!!!

I have heard that it bounces on landing. True or false?

Yes it does...replace the wheels with the air type...do not inflate.
Use a set of low bounce wheels seem to help.

Hello!
I am just about to assembly my Stearman. I noticed that the tankposition is rather high considering that the engine is supposed to be mounted inverted. I will put a Saito 120 in it. Do I have to lower the tank - which seems like a tedious task - or is it ok as it is?

I flew my new Super Stearman yesterday. The plane flies great. Set up with a Saito 150 and using the ailerons slaved together. On the first landing the plane looked like a rubber ball bouncing down the runway. This resulted in cracks in the right landin gear. The fiberglass has the cracks. After calling Great Planes tech support number I was told they would send me a new gear. Asked about the inflatable wheels and I was told I could order them. There is no way you can land this plane the way it ships from Great Planes. I have not been able to talk directly to them. More to come on this later.

Hey cannonball, nice bird. I have put 3003's through out the plane with a six volt sub 'C' pack and they pull everything fine. I have a brand new old G-23 in it and it pulls it very nicely. One thing on the fuel, Kikki Sommerzini once said that if you use Aviation fuel in a gasser you will have a most dependable engine.
Now, before everybody jumps in and claims that they have never had any problems running pump gas, let me say that it is still cheaper than glow fuel and it is of the highest octain and worth the investment. I have also run pump fuel but the aviation is still the best.
Just a note on the 2.4. Those who advise not to use it on this plane are right. It is way too much for it. There are no provisions for flying wires and it could over speed the plane.
It is yours to do as you wish but you did ask and there are those of us that have done this for a long time and do not wish to see you destroy your beautiful bird because you wish to fly it fast. It wasn't made for that in full size and certainly not in the model.
By the way, I use to live in El Reno about forty miles west of OK city in 1980. I drove for Dolese concrete. Big outfit.
Here are a few photo's of a stearman I am working on. bird.

Now, here are a few of my model.
The mustach is made by gluing the end of a paint brush on with med. CA while still on the handle. Then cut off and trim.
The leather helmet is from an old latex DGA figure I had laying around. Fit just right. The pilot actually looks like my friend Hank who owns the full size stearman. Enjoy. bird.
By the way, be careful about how hard you land. It will crack the molded fiberglass on the gear. Also, Use pliers on the cabain struts to ajust them or it will crack it also.

The aviation gas sounds ok but what if your engine manufacturer says to use 87 octane gas?

Well why would you want to listen to the manufacture? What could he possibly know about his product that you don't know better?
You seem to want to try the av gas, so go for it.
Let us know what happens.
