I don't think there is anything wrong with this engine. Mis-information has made them cheap to buy and I am glad for that as I bought two. They are very underrated and do not like to run lean. I have had no problems with mine and know of several others that are very happy with theirs.
They are fuel hogs at full throttle but back of just a bit and they are not too bad.
Having said that I have 8 gassers,
and have chosen the BME 50 for 'Patty".
I like the simplicity of the gas engines, and the fact you do not have the oil mess to clean off your plane. You need less support equipment and best of all the reliability of the gas engine is a big plus.
Which is better Gas or Glow?
Which is Better Chevy or Ford?
WHAT WORKS FOR YOU !!!!!!!!

Blackhawk,
Thats true, I have never tried petrol (Gas) engines before and like the thought so I guess I get a petrol engine. Does anyone have a link to BME, ZDZ or Brisson that I can check out. Or even better know of a UK dealer?
Thanks Alan

Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said the OS-BGX engine is no good. All I was saying is that for me the gas engines were a better choice for the Patty because they are more powerful, a lot more reliable, easier to operate and less expensive to run. Also I believe many guys on this thread would agree with me.

I bet they didn't install a glow engine in this one. Check this 70% Staudacher R/C model at http://www.bktsi.com/powerflite/special_projects.htm One question, " How does he get this monster out of his house?"

70% er with my kid riding in the hot seat.
Definitely a BIG Gasser on this bird. And cool looking engine as well.

And my wife thought that my Giant Scales are big.

My wife and in-laws thought my Patty was huge and extravagant. They came out to the Giant Scale fun fly to see me fly and after seeing the rest of the planes they stopped commenting.

I was there ( At 2002 TOC) to see that 70% edge and all I can say is WOW, The owner says he has a multimillion dollar insurance policy for the thing and cant fly it without droping 5 grand down (yes thats 5 thousand), The prop cost him 7 thousand alone!! 65 hp engine, servos have over 5 ft lbs of tourqe and it weighs about 3 hundred pounds (if memory serves me right) all this and he uses robart hinges 'alot of em'- He has a total of right about 70 thousand into it- heck for that I would of built a full scale (or at least had a good start).
Anyways better quit here, 'Sorry' dont want to get too far off course (the thread) here.

An ultraligh engine and prop, not a $7000.00 prop. The servos are about $500.00/ea (Seiko)
$5000.00 a flight?, this is not the space shuttle.

Otherwise, yeah, looks like pretty much an experimental without the pilot.
But for sure, if I was going to spend that kind of money on a flying machine, no way I'm going to stand there on the ground while it flies - it's going to be carrying me in it

Uh yea uh uhuh- I am only repeating what the OWNER said (my mistake-yes a studacher NOT an edge) As for the five G,s for each flying session- Iwas told it is to cover insurance costs and YES I was told in EXCESS of 70,000 to build. And YES I was told seven grand for the prop HE said the prop cost that much because of the modifications to it.
Hey Guys im not throwing S**T in the wind here I'm only repeating what I was told!!!!
If any of ya want to confirm any of this heres one of the builders e-mail address ([email protected]) or Rick Head @ www.rcpowerflite.com Or heck if ya feel like calling Dial 845-361-3660 and you should get Rick (The electrical Design mgr.) for this project or 972-267-5099 or 972-271-3539 and ask for Rick!!! He had TONs of design input and hands on building of this thing!! The electrical system looked like something out of the space shuttle!!
So LOL right back atcha- But I have to say ONCE AGAIN - Theres no way I,d spend that without building a full scale!!!
But as I said before this thread is losing it's main theme here so we better keep on track or risk having it ended.

I agree blackhawk-I know I could do the same project for about 20 to 25 G's or mabey even less. But I was only 'quoting' spoken words of bull-doo doo.
I was looking at the patty tonight and almost stuck her with the knife as those 4 stringers dont seem to be enough but I think I've decided to give a go at her without modification-I think (hope) it will be just fine with the heavier 3-W up front!! (heavier than BME or DA and ZDZ) It's just too bad that such a fine engine as 3-W has to be a 'little' heavier than the rest!! But I'm still hoping to pull off some good 3-D with this setup!!!

300Sjack are you talking about the 5 stringers in the nose? If so your Patty's nose will be plenty strong for the 3W. What does it weigh 8 onces more than the BME? The only reason the other Patty's nose broke off was because it hit a light pole first. If you make decent landings the nose modification is not necessary. I personally think the modification weakens the nose.
I checked and both engines the 3W48 twin and the 3W50 are about a pound heavier than the BME 50. You still should be fine but should have opted for the BME instead.
