CMPro/Chief/GSP 72.5 Extra 300s Build thread
#51
I would glue the floor into the canopy as it makes the canopy much stronger. I used screws, later replaced with blind nuts and metal threads. I can’t remember the AUW. It has a fairly high wing loading which doesn’t help the flight characteristics. I now have the CM pro Katana it has a 10% larger wing area and flies very nicely. My problems may be due to being a heavier model to start with not sure!
The Katana also has issues with the entry to the inside. Do a search on the Katana there is a very big thread on here about build and flight report it has some pictures of a mod to make a removable canopy this may be adapted to the extra for a sturdier canopy.

My Feedback: (94)
I've been flying the plane for quite a while without using the floor and it works just fine. I just use 4 screws and I only take two off and bend the canopy over to attach and detach the wings. To keep the wings on I use zip ties where the factory springs would go and do not use the bolts. I can get the plane together in about 3 min at the field. This plane is actually my daily flyer and I have a ton of flights on it. I use an OS 160fx with an 18x6W APC prop, it has unlimited vertical and weight is in the low 12lb rang, definately not a 3D plane but can do smooth aerobatics well. It can also hover, but its not the best plane for it. Here is a video I had made of it. Me and another buddy of mine both have them, flying two together is really a blast.
http://members.cox.net/mugenkidd/extra300.wmv (usually the landings aren't that bouncy "murphy's law" when the video tape is rolling)

Mugen,
I am putting my plane togather. Can you post the picture of canopy to sshow the location of screws and how do you bend it to put the wings togather.
Thanks,

Thanks.
Thanks.

Hi Patrick,
I like youir set up!! Sounds like you know your stuff. I just urchased the same plane and am going to set it up like yours. What landing gear and fuel tank did you go with? Thanks Chad Erickson

Hi Everybody,
I"ve the same craft, and I can proudly report that yesterday the very first flight was succsessful.It has no bad habit at all, quite on the contrary, this is a really precise and gorgeus plane for that money.Needless to say you allways have to use some speed.During the first flight I Only had to use of 3 clicks of right trims, nothing else.The new St2300 engine is absolutely Ok for normal pattern flying with 10% nitro fuel. I"m gonna useit as a trainer for my next project : CMPRO EXTRA 330L.
All in all I"m satisfied with this plane.

I'm new to this post and would like to know what prop was flown with all these engines. I been flying this plane for about one year and tried every prop to slow down the landings and give me some pull out of a hover. I finally bought a 17 x 4 and will try it with my saito 180. The lowest pitch prop i have used is a 8 and i have to much foward speed. Does anyone fly this plane with a saito 180 and if so what prop are you using.? Center of gravity is perfect. Does anyone fly this plane with COG set back?

Hi pallyjr,
I"ve been flying this ship for a month now, and what I can recomend you, set the cg back and the plane will float in like never before.In fact it"s not a 3d ship at all, but after a week I could hover it, With my Stiger 2300 and 18*8 apc prop. This plane is a real joy to fly, at least with mz setup.

Yaaaaaa, my plane is almost done. Patty is looken pretty hot!!
I need to set the cg on it yet. I tried to put my fingers where the directions said but I don't trust that technique on a big plane like this one. I read a post that said to pull out the wings out a little from the side of the plane and tie a couple pieces of string around the wing tube. Will this work? How did you guys do it?

Hi Chap,
Forget this old method, it won"t work with a big plane like this.You need a perfect CG, so buy a suitable cg machine.I"m using a Gplanes cgm. and it"s perfect for this purpose.

Hi,
I"m strongly recommend you this ship, but if you want gas in her nose you need at least a 30 cm powerful engine to buy.

Thought I would pitch in with my experience of this plane.
Bought it as an unfinished project from a club member a month or so ago. Most of the work had been done even down to fitting the engine, an ASP120 2s. Wouldn't of been my choice but I thought I would give it a go as it was cheap
Finished it all off last week so took it for its maiden over the weekend. I was worried about the CofG as I had to mount the battery on the engine box AND add another 80g of weight to the engine mount!! I hate adding weight to models. I tried to weigh it before I added any fuel but my scales only go up to 11.5lbs and it was over this [
] This is not a light plane by any stretch.
Anyway, first flight was very uneventful and everything checked out fine. CofG was good and it hardly needed any down elevator to keep it level in the invert. Landing was quick but well behaved. A sigh of relief and a little jump for joy as this is my first large plane
So a couple more flights and I pushed it a bit harder and still everything was in order and I was really enjoying flying a large plane at last. Still coming in fast and finding it hard to slow down but then there is a lot of weight coming in!
Next flight and the trims were all over the place!! No idea why but I carried on and re trimmed. Just didn't feel right in the sky but I thought it was just me. When it came to landing it went all wrong. All or nothing on the controls, really had difficulty in bringing it in. Went around a couple of times before I decided to just cut the motor and get it down. It came down hard although I had full elevator in. So hard on the undercarriage and then flipped over onto the rudder [
]
Went and inspected the crash site and found one answer straight away, one of the aileron control linkages were off so I only had one aileron!! Kicked myself over this as I was going to replace these as I had the elevator ones. I really didn't like the kit solder jointed control linkages and the elevator ones were really loose. Replaces these with some nice carbon/alloy ones to take out all off the slop. Looked at the aileron ones and I didn't have anything to replace them with so just checked them over to ensure they were tight. So I obviously missed something here as one still managed to get away [>:] My own fault I know and I still haven't finished kicking myself yet [&o]
So damage report;
The alloy plate the the under cart fixes to took a bit of a pounding! This is now bent up into the fuse and all the surrounding wood is smashed. Not sure if this is worse due to the alloy plate or better?? I think it is better but it's just going to be a pain to fix. I think I need to create some more damage first to actually remove the alloy plate before I can straighten it. I can't see a way of getting to the fixing bolts that hold it to the fuse without having to cut an opening in the underside of the plane [
]
The only other damage is to the rudder. This took a hit when the plane flipped over and it has broken the hinges. This can probably be repair fairly easily but I think I will pin the hinges before flying again.
On the whole I enjoyed the few flights I had with this model although it is heavy. I am just really miffed that I now have it back in the workshop requiring some major repair work which I might of been able to avoid [>:]

Cheers Georgee for the encouragement
You mentioned in one of your earlier post about setting the CofG back further, can you remember how far back? And was this at the wing chord or at the 200mm out mark as per the instructions?

Hi Andy,
I"ve set up the cg according the manual ,125 mm aft at the 200mm out mark. I wonder why your Extra is so fast during landings,maybe extremely nose heavy.In fact after you flare it behaves like an advanced trainer. Has the Asp120 enough power to move it , I mean for pattern?

Hi Georgee,
I have also set the CofG to the same place but I had to use quite a lot of weight up front to achieve it. When flying the invert is very good only requiring a small amount of down to keep it level. So I am happy that it could come back a little.
It probably comes in a little fast due to me not bleeding off enough speed on the approach. This is due to me not wanting the plane to do something nasty like drop a wing on me at the wrong moment. I do need to try and bleed more speed off on approach.
I will be setting about the repairs tonight so I may have it airborne again by the weekend

Andy,
As far as I can decide,that"s the problem what you"ve wrote.Practice the final approaches with a little bit less speed, and start the manouvre from not so high.Believe me it won"t tip stall.

Hi George,
Thanks for the advice. I do need to practice the final approach with this model and it's good to hear that it is well behaved at that slow approach speed. I was nervous of it as it was the first couple of flights and I had no idea of low speed behavior. I have been flying my Kyosho Brieitling Cap lately and that does drop a wing on approach so with the weight and wing loading of this Extra I thought it might do the same.
I need to practice some more
Most of the repairs have been done tonight
Just down to recovering over the patch ups as best as I can now. I also will change the control rods on the ailerons before I attempt flying again. I need to order up a new pitts muffler the new shinny one fitted to the model took a bash and broke both pipes [
]
Hopefully all will be ready by the weekend for another try out.
Thanks,
Andy

wOw!! My bird is heavy. I decided to go with a pull pull system and move every thing I can up to the front. Before doing so I had to add almost a pound to balance it out and thats with a heavy gas engine. Landings are tough it comes in way to fast but she sure is fun up in the air. The piped evolution g26 has some nuts!! Hopefully I can lighten it up and give her another try. She sure is pretty but she needs to loose a little wieght.
