Hey, I've been flying my GBS for a couple weeks now, Love It! I went with electric and am very happy. 10 cells, Tacon Big Foot 160 and APC 19x10. This combo flys the plane awesome!

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
I finally got to do the maiden on my Big Stik. What a nice flyer !
Went with the tail-dragger configuration. The flaps are made active and a quarter of an inch of down elevator was programmed in when the flaps are activated down. Total weight 13 pounds 8 ounces.
Used the O.S.GT33 gasser for power. I used a set of 30cc DLE engine standoffs http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXYUT3&P=ML These standoffs worked out like they were designed for this engine and plane combination. Used a 3 1/2†Tru Turn spinner.
I only have 3 flights so I’m leaving my high-side setting a little on the rich side ‘til I get about 10 flights on her. Then I’ll start to lean it out.

Why did you mount the engine sideways?
Why did you mount the engine sideways?
Then I decided to use the taildragger configuration, but the engine was already mounted. It doesn't hurt a thing being side mounted. Plus, it puts the fuel adjustment screws in a straight-up position.
With the fuel adjustment screws being in a straight-up position it makes it much easier to adjust the carb with the engine running. I know it's a little dangerous, but this is the way I've been adjusting any/all carbs for over 50 years.

Congrats on your maiden Joe Mamma! This is the only plane I've been taking to the field this year. I absolutely love it. Programed crow and some flap mixes. Flies like a bat out of hell then slows down and lands at a crawl. It's the biggest Electric at the field.

Thanks !
I may need to get rid of the CA hinges on the elevator and replace them with a set of Robarts pin hinges. At another Big Stik thread I just read of yet another guy losing his CA hinges on the elevator due to flutter........then splat !
If I read something bad about an RC plane or RC component just once, it may just be an isolated case by the pilot/builder, but if I read it more than one time it may be something worth noting.
It may be worth changing the hinges, if for anything, just for a little bit of cheap insurance.

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
I just ordered my third Giant Stick after losing my second one to a mid air the other day. I am going to make some changes with this one to improve it. First of all I am going to use flat HD pinned hinges as it will save time over installing hinge points. All I need to do is change the thickness of the pre made slots a bit with my hinge tool. With the DLE30 this plane still comes out tail heavy and it requires a bunch of lead in the nose. So this time I am going to leave the rudder and elevator servos for last and will either mount one or both of them under the wing and use solid push rods so I will not have to add any lead to balance. That alone will save 12 to 14 ounces. I ended up removing the DLE55 form my last one as it was shaking the plane apart from all the power and I liked the way it flew at the lighter weight with the 30. It is not much slower with the 30 at all. The vertical is not as strong though as it was with the 55. Still unlimited and If I can lower the weight close to a pound it will be even better. I will post the results of my plane when it is completed and see how it compares to my old one. Here is a couple of pics of the demise of Stick #2. It was in a full power dive when my friend chewed off my tail. All I had time to do is cut the power before it impacted. It sounded like it hit a concrete wall when it hit the pond. The impact was hard enough to cave in the front of the muffler and bend the fins on the cylinder.

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
Super,
Wow what a wreck! Sorry about that.
I now have 24 flights on mine and am really enjoying it a bunch. I have a CRRC 40 on it using the beam mounts and still have the standoffs behind a plywood mount forward of the firewall. It still took several oz. to balance. I have a Turnigy 50HP to add soon, I doubt there will be any weight penalty, or at least very minor balance issues done properly. I replaced all hinges with Dubro nylon.
The plane flies well but is a little short of unlimited vertical.
Sweet plane!

That is why my friend and I use them for formation flying. They are the best bang for the buck so to speak for a larger gasser and is easy and quick to replace when in a mishap. Not bad for being our first after about three years of flying like this. For power we have tried OS 1.60, Fuji 43, MT 57, DLE 55, DLA56, and the DLE 30. I find that the DLE 30 has shown the best overall performance. The newer 35cc engines from DLE, DA and others would be the best but I already have a 30.

It sounds as though my Giant Big Stik has another candidate for a power plant. I was going to use either my Evolution 26GT or maybe even my DLE-55. Instead, I think I will give my NIB Brillelli 36cc two-stroke a shot at it. I also have a Saito FG-36 four-stroke gasoline burner that might work well too.
Really, these ARF models are not designed to dive straight down at full throttle. Take my word for it (mentioned earlier in another post).

Flaps and alerons work togather as alerons untill i hit a swicth and the flaps drop. The plane has ulimtied vertical. Iam using a zoar 20x10 three blade. Needed more ground clearnice at my fied, was cutting grass with the 22x10. plane flys awsome no problems havent pushed it to the maxx or anything like that but so far i like it!

That too. I was referring to the damage I was seeing from having so much power when we were flying with the 55 class motors. Over time it was breaking the joints in the stabs and they would need to be reglued. The way we fly them didn't help any.

I know, I dont fly my Ultra Stick 120 Lite with a DLE-30 that much, but since 90% of my time these days is with a 104 AJSlick with a DA-120, I try to fly the Stick like I fly the Slick. It does not really want to do all that, but it still alot of fun. No matter what other planes I have, I still like the Sticks for fun fly time.

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
Pulled the trigger and ordered the GP Giant Stick yesterday from my LHS, should be here Wednesday next week. Also back ordered the DLE 35 which is due to start shipping mid September, hope it's a good match for this bird?
