Winter Flying
How do you guys keep your hands warm when flying outdoors during the winter?
I want to try fly on the lakes this year when I go ice fishing, but i need to keep warm!
Have you guys seen anything out there for this?
some kind of radio cover to slip your hands inside that connects to a blow dryer that connects to a generator thats powerd by the water current under the ice. that cooks hotdogs and keeps you warm.
Thanks

Jeez dose, it sounds like you got it all figgered out already!
A friend and I made our Tx. muffs out of a childs jacket...
I cut the sleeves off to about T-shirt length, and shortened the height of it.
Stapled the bottom closed, and I put my hands in thru the sleeve holes, and run the antenna out the neck hole...
I ditched the zipper and replaced it w/ velcro.

RE: Winter Flying
Depending on just how cold, I just get a warm pair of gloves and cut off the tips of the thumb and index finger. 20- 30 degrees +/-. The often overlooked problem is cold hardware. Batteries, engines, etc. Batteries don't like extreme cold unless your flying lipos that tend to get warm in flight. But keep your tx warm. Put it in your car between flights. Also remember that the planes get colder in flight due to the air stream and altitude.
Frankly, I'm sick of it. In Chicago, 3 months of good weather (maybe), 9 months of "...I hate this f#@$% city" So, Next year. We are moving to Tucson !!!!!!!! [sm=thumbup.gif]

Dose, IMO it's more than just keeping ya hands warm.
This is what works for me:
A good pair of insulated boots
A one piece thermal insulated winter work suit with
a hood.
A very good stocking hat.
Then the wool inserts for gloves from a Army/Navy
surplus store.
This set up works for me down to about 10`f.
Below 10, add thermal underware.
Regards
Roby

Buy an old 55-gal drum. Put all your trash in it like paper towels , etc,,, add a little wood...pour some Power Master 20\20 on it and stay close. Not too close though,,,,, them empty nitro cans get angry when heated sometimes.

I've used both skis and pontoons and I have found that
planes that are less than 80 inches seem to like the
pontoons. The larger planes seem to get along just fine
with the skis.

My planes fly great in that cold air. the problem is my numb fingers. I'll have to get one of those radio mitts!

Try the RC Glove. Here's the review. I bought one last year and it works as advertised.

RE: Winter Flying
dose,
I fly on Lake George when I'm ice fishing sometimes. I usually bring a SPAD. I just wear fleece gloves and keep the flight times short. One thing that can help is a pair of latex gloves to keep the glow fuel off your skin when you're messing around starting, etc. Also, a little squirt bottle of lighter fluid (Ronsonol) works great for priming the engines in the cold. A few drops down the open carb, a few flips to distribute it, and then an easy start.
Good flying,
desmobob

I'm a little more cautious than I used to be. I put a full-size 4WD pickup through the ice on Paradox Lake several years ago.

RE: Winter Flying
Sunny days with little to no wind.[8D] Coleman makes a catyltic heater PowerCat, has a fan and is a cool heat (won't burn you immediately). I use the heater on days cooler than 20 degrees. Batting gloves also work good, thin and lightweight allows for some sensitivity -takes a little to get use to. But in the end, bare hands in bright sun works best.
