I will give it a try. Looking forward to flying this thing it sure it nice looking. I shouldn't have a problem with keeping the speed up. I actually land all of my planes hot. I trained on the mustang pts, and my instructor taught me to land it like a typical warbird. as he put it "Fly it to the ground" i've since landed all but my fun-fly twist that way, and never had a hiccup. It helps to be on a low-cut grass runway too. I doubt I could get away with it on a paved one.

Even on low cut grass you will find the stock nose wheel strut is too week and does not have enough "spring". It will soon be bent back towards the tail. I replaced mine with a stronger version from another company (it might have been one from SIG). Good luck on your maiden.

I figured I would be upgrading that from all the posts on it. I will wait until after the maiden to see if it survives. No need in adding niceties to a lawn dart.

It turns out that my cg was at 85mm from the leading edge ! That was probably due to removing the wheel pant and accessories from the nose wheel and replacing it with the fultz strut (no wheel pant). I know better than assuming the cg would not chage much but it was one of those things of getting it in the air. I will be adding enough weight to the firewall to move the cg forward to about 72mm (emty fuel tank). I will post some info on how that works out next week.

Here are a few pics from my maiden from take off to the exhilerating landing. As you can see, she dropped a wing just before touch down and was able to recover with full left aileron on high rates.

I moved the cg to 70mm from the leading edge and it seemed to help the snap tendency at slow speed. I made a fairly slow landing and she did not snap. On my second flight, I made some aggressive roles and a few loops and it seemed OK. It did act a little strange when I came out of a loop. I brought her in refueled and took her up for her third and FINAL flight. Unfortunately, that strange tendency on the previous flight was actually a tip stall. On this final flight I performed a another loop, fairly high, but it was fatal. Near the bottom of the loop, she snapped, went into a spiral and I could not recover. She went in nearly flat but almost straight down. With the fiberglass body, the results were devastating!! Total unrecoverable damage to the fuse but the wing was undamaged....

My assessment is that this plane is unstable and must have the cg set EXACTLY right before it can be flown safely. It is also not a plane to just fly without very close attention to speed, and attitude. I don't recommend this plane for those looking for a fun relaxing flyer. Too bad as she looks great....

The holes for the aluminum pins (usually dowel rod) used to mate the forward part of the wing to the fuselage seem to be missing or not there - how did others line up the fuselage and the wing to locate the holes?

I set the wing in the saddle, and you can see where the holes are in the fuse. I marked their location and that's where I drilled. Worked fine for me.

I agree, just set the wing on the fuse, mark the holes, and drill. You won't have any problems. At least I didn't. Good Luck..

Crebulus and Tim,

Thank you for information - I did place the wing in the saddle, as you suggested, and you can certainly see where the holes need to go.

After reading all the horror posts on the CMPRO lancair, I decided to increase the wingspan 9" to tame the horrible tip stall tendency. I added a 9" section in the center of the wing made out of high density foam, covered with 1/16 balsa and a 9" longer aluminum tube. Also had to modify the main landing gear so it won`t be 9" wider apart. Will post pictures nexts week and send a test fly report after the first flight. It is such a beautiful aircraft that it deserves the extra effort.

I would wait and see how the mods work out, I should test fly it in a couple of weeks. Last week I test flew a friends Lancair with no mods and it is a really hot plane, I was so nervous about tip stalling it that the whole flight, take off and landign was at the same speed, flew it twice with no damage.

Dear Mr. Calixto:

Please send me information about the mod that you are doing, I also have a friend (Perkio) Who is building one with the same type of modification and I am sure that you guys could share some info. In the other Hand my friend Ringo has a very nice Lancair that flew a couple of weeks ago and he claimed that it flew fine with no problems at all.

Hope you Lancair Gurus get this problem solved.

Regards
Rayo Morronga

Hi Mr. Rayo Morronga.

I will talk to Perkeo and have him call you to make an apointment and give you all the details, because his Lancair will be finishe before mine. Of course you will have to pay for dinner and drinks afterwards for Ringo Perkeo and me, besides you will have to put up with all the BS he puts out ever y time he shows up.

Dear Mr. Rayo Morronga.

Ringo`s Lancair flew again yesterday with no problem, I believe the people that have had problems with tip stalls had way too much throw in the elevator, Ringo`s only has 8 mm up and down and it is more than enough.

Calixto

Thank you very much.......I did see Ringos plane and it flew perfect!!!!!!! I have also heard that you are going to increase not only the wing but the size of the winglets to make your plane fly like a glider.... can you confirm this information and post some pictures???
Mine is 99% done I will post some pictures......

regards

Hello Everyone i received one of these planes for christmas 2006 been in the garage till now bran new and i have started to assemble it slowly. Lots og horror stories on the plane. Scary wings folding and spirling to the ground tip stalls ect. CG has to be right on ect. But all that aside it is an Awsome looking plane and i'm goin to build it and fly it. So i was wondering if there is anyone out there that may have some pictures of there set up on this plane meaning how the insides look such as receiver servos engine mounting build pictures i guess mainly something to refrence off of.
The plane seems to have a pretty good blue print but it is a little confusing too. and pictures always help for refrence and appriciated. And after i have completed mine will be sure and post my setup too for others who need refrence.

Finished mine last night, made the following modifications, Added a 7.5" to the wing at the center (will post pictures monday) made new main landing gear so they wouldn`t be set too far apart. weight is 6.25 pounds. Dialed inn the following throws elevator 8 mm up and down, 16 mm total, ailerons 0.5" up an down 1" total, ruder .75" left and right, 1.5" total. cg, set at .72mm from leading edge at the root.
I have a friend that built one without mods, and it flies beautifully, just lands a little hot. Very importat to set the cg. at 72mm and keep the throws in the elevator below 10mm in each direction, if you dial inn too much throw, it will snap when you give it full elevator. I am shure that is what happened to all the people that have crashed it.
Will post pictures of construction and set up monday, also a first flight report.

Great sounds like it will be a great plane and i'm sure your right about the throws on the flight surfaces. probably the main casue of the wings folding. Heard alot about wing tip stalling but with amod like extending the wings should eliminate that. or just coming in hot would probably solve the problem it definetly doesnt look like a slow flying plane. My sion says it reminds him of a shark. Cant wait to see the pics of your plane Cal glad others have planes of this type seems to be a rare plane. Or those that have them just dont want to talk about them

You are absolutely right about the elevator and snap tendencies. I trashed mine because it snapped when I pulled on the elevator coming out of a loop. Certainly a snappy little plane that must be flown fast and landed hot. Not at all like the great Planes Lancair that I have. It is just a pleasure to fly and does not snap on hard elevator pulls. Took mine out today and what a dream flyer that looks great. Good luck with the modifications to the CMP model.

My son did the first and second flights, had problesms with the engine overheating (new OS .46 that only had burned one tank of fuel). It flies like the unmodified one, only that it can slow down much more for for landings and the glide ratio is shallower. itl does tip stall if it slows down too much. Atached some pictures of my Lancair with the mods (the one with the black stripes at the wing root.
