I just drilled 2 3/32 hole in the wing 1/2" apart then wraped around the strut fitting. Be carefull not to get the elastic looped together or the wings won't be able to be seperated..

I'm going to use a Fuji 24 2c From Tower Hobbies.. The airframe needs nose weight anyway...

Thanks for the quick response....
Have you flown the Beech with the Fuji?
Is the airframe able to withstand a gasser?
The FPE 2.4 (40cc)(might be over kill) is 3.1 hp an 3.25 lbs. including muffler.
Should do ok.
With the fuji, did it require and additional nose weight?
And are you using the tail retract?
Thanks again for your responses.

Put the first flights on my T/F Staggerwing today. Here are the spec's,

Engine : OS 1.60 2C
Prop: APC 17x10
Fuel: Wildcat 15%
Muffler: Slim Line Pitts
Radio: JR 10X
Servo's: JR 8411
Retract's: Robart
Weight: 18 Lbs 8 Oz

The OS 1.60 is plenty of power. The engine /prop combo seemed to work great. I could fly at 1/3 throttle for cruise. At full throttle this airplane moves! It was off the ground in less than 75'. In the air the airplane is very nimble. Rolls, loops, stall turns, point rolls, were effortless. I slowed the plane down to check the stall characteristics. Without flaps it broke clean with a tendencies to drop the left wing. With half flap it would never really break, it would just mush at a slightly nose down attitude. At full flap it really slows down, again it would just hold the nose at a slightly nose down attitude. What I really like about the flap application is the way the model handles. It just gets a rock solid feeling. I mixed about 1/16 of down elevator at mid flap and another 1/16 at full flap. Others at the field commented how it grooved in the landing pattern. BTW, I flew off of grass and I did not experience any problems with the gear fairings. I would guess if you had a taller grass you may have a problem.

I think you guy's will like this one.

Brian,

Thanks for your report. I am especially happy to hear that you flew off of a grass filed without any problmes. I have been considering removing the hinged bottom part of the gear covering, but now I will try it as it is.

Did you have to add some weight to the nose?

I am wondering if a four cell 1650 NIMH receiveer battery is enough. What did you use?

Jim, I had to add 13oz to the nose. That put the CG at the 5.5 mark.

I received my replaced airplane today and am happy to say that everything survived shipping and the lower wings fit perfectly. The turn around with Top Flite was very good and they were in contact via email quite often.

So now I can get busy. The weather is frightful, at least for flying with the temps running from 21 to -8 with about a foot of snow. So, light the wood stove in the shop and get busy. It sure is good to see that a few of you are having successful first flights and beyond. I am still planning using the Saito FA-170R.

Why not put the new Fuji 24 in the nose and keep it all in house.

Just got my plane in today, nice.
The motor should be in Monday I hope.
I went with the new Evolution 26GT2 (1.6) Gas Engine at Horrizon Hobbies.
Should work nice.

Brett,

I was considering the Evolution 1.6 gasser, too. I would have bought one for my Staggerwing, if I didn't have the Saito 180 available.

Keep us posted on your results. I am curious how it will compare to the 180 that I used.

Copterviews,
I too am interested in this combo. The Staggerwing is on it's way to my, and I also was looking at the 26GT, I think the 35 might be too much. If possible, when you get yours, could you measure from the prop drive washer to the back of the motor? The Evo website and manual doesn't give that dimension. I have another project waiting for motors and I think these will fit. Thanks very much.

Russ,

The info I was given by Horizon was that from the prop drive washer to rear of engine is 4.5". And the dimension from the centerline of the prop drive shaft to the top of the spark plug cap is 5". This package would fit pretty cleanly. They are quoting 3 HP at 9000 so that should be ample power. I've looked at this also but still thinking of the Saito FA-170R radial. This bird is just begging for a radial. This motor might be on the bottom of the power curve but with the right propI think it would fly it fine at the scale speeds for the airplane.

Good Luck.

Hello to all

I am French, I have just bought a staggerwing topflite, I think of putting a OS 160 FT.
Would have you advices of assembly, regulation?
Is it a good choice of engine?
Know you a kit for the cockpit?

Thank you in advance

I am going with the EVO35. It will show the plug a bit but I think the extra margin of power will make me rest better. I know it is not a high performance design but for the wieght, it will not be too much power.

Regards,
Randy
