Bignasdy,
I lost $35.00 on the deal, but it would have cost me more to send it back to Tower when you figure in Shipping there and for the original order plus a charge back for the promotion, because the order than would be to low. How do you like the MDS? I never really heard to much about them.
I really like the Tower .75's, but I allready have one and I think the Saito 1.00 will be neater in this plane. Good luck on the flying tomorrow. I hope to have mine flying in a couple weeks. I am really looking forward to it.

What are you guys doing for cooling holes? The instructions are silent and I'm relatively new to glow, so how much air do I need exiting the cowling? I have to cut a pretty big hole on one side for the exhaust so I was thinking I would duplicate that on the other side ala fake exhaust to provide cooling - about the size of the head. Sound about right to you all???

You can not shoot a plane out of a tree with a shotgun. I had one stuck in a tree last year, 50 to 75 ft. up. No way to get it down. I tried everything and after a few days I decided to try to shoot it down in hopes of recovering some hardware items. I tried several different load sizes as well as deer slugs. They went through the plane like it wasn't even there. The plane didn't even move when it was being shot. No the plane wasn't wedged in a Y branch, it was perched at the very top of the tree, swaying in the wind. [:@]

The fellow did shoot it out of the tree. It was a four * 40, and the plane was blown to smithereans. He was aiming for the branches.
The same fellow put a plane in a tree a couple years ago, and came back that night and cut down the tree with a chain saw.[X(] The club was mad after they found out since it was on the neighboring land in the woods.[X(] This fellow was not very good flier.
He nolonger flies in our club. The woods is 75 yds behind our flying stations.[X(]

Hepdog....back on page 1 or 2 of this thread shows my cooling holes. the above statements about size are correct.
I made it to the feild today, but didnt fly the hellcat. I flew rarebear first, 4 flights...had so much fun I didnt want to mess with the hellcat just yet.
After reading all the critics comments on the hellcat, I came to the conclusion that i better have another looker over the thing. All the gluing I did seems fine, and I dont ever go by what anyone else thinks anyway, but there must be somethin to all the gripes and complaints that I have not experienced in assembling the plane.
So....I'll look it over again, do any mods needed, and will take it out again.

Thanks Bignasdy. I'll start small and enlarge the exits as required.
On the firewall glue, it would appear there may be a couple versions out there already. On mine it does indeed look like some form of "hot glue" BUT there is no way that stuff is coming off[X(] I grabbed it with pliers and its as hard as a rock! There was just no way to get a good enough grip on it to pull any of it off - and in the areas where I could grab it - it wouldn't budge. I even broke out the heat gun but to no avail..... So I just FG'd over top of it with a couple layers of cloth, looks good.
As to firewall flex, grabbing the prop hub and giving it a damn good pull or push the firewall doesn't move at all - its really solid - on mine at least. This was both before and after the FG job - I only did FG just to be sure based on what was said here but I'm beginning to wonder....
Did the wings tonight. Glued up real nice with no sanding. Take it easy on the tape to hold it together while the glue sets, it lifts the covering off and requires more work later. The stars and bars will also come off if you tape over them. I found a couple strips of tape on the bottom nice and tight and then 2 great big pieces pulled tight from tip to tip hold everything in perfect alignment without lifting the covering too much.
On mine the wing bolt holes were bang on. Perfectly aligned on the first try.
Total time so far about 10 hours and the wing is done, engine is in (had to machine the muffler a little), and the cowl is half done. Not bad at all.

Tonight I has was able to glue up one wing panel. I have carbon fiber running from the root rib all the way to the center. I am really glad I was able to pull that off, since it appears the spar is spliced too plus notched.[X(] If you look carefully look in the wheel well and look at the elevation of the spar you can see it.[X(] I was able to make a slot (drilled two 1/8 holes with a 12" bit and a needle file) and was able to insert a 1/4" wide 1/32 thick piece of carbon which is epoxied between the spar and the joiner. My wing will not fail at that joint.
I am beginning to like this plane other than the really shabby spar design and overall glue joints which really suck.

FIRST FLIGHT MOTOR TOO HOT...SAGGED AND SPED UP ON FINAL...FLEW PAST ME ABOUT 200 YARDS......TAIL CAME UP ON LANDING, NOTHING DAMAGED. tHE RETRACTS HEKD FIRM.
sECOND FLIGHT ..OPENED UP THE COWL FOR COOLING. nO PROBS, BUT WILL open two more cooling flaps for heat exit.
ther was no wind 95 dgrees, humidity 90%
This plane flies light and crisp. Had no prblems whatsoever, except overheating the first flight. Im not gonna correct all the typos becaus this dinosaur website will erase all the poist. this is my third attemt at posting. Motorman....you can see there is no oil on the mains..to answer your question.
You can also see the 3 inch wide crack in the ground...the whold feild is cracked and I had no probs at all.
You can also see the weeds on the gear from the first landing...again, no probs. Yall keep modifying, Im goin flyin!
LOL
good luck!

yea buddy!
Its so dry here this year.....by the end of summer, the cracks will be way to wide for good takeoffs. I'll go fly off a street somewhere.
All I need is a cudesac! LOL
Did ya see the flap openings on page 1 or 2?
I just keep things simple man. I'll be doing the others today, and will post pics for ya tonight sometime.
Nice feild.......but while your flyin with snow skies.....my feild will look like yours from october til june!
LOLOL
I wish I could get some snow to fly on.....did it when I was stationed at ft meade MD.
Had a superchipmonk on skies I made from light ply and music wire. Made them in like 1 hour and flew til the batteries were dead.
"you guys" have fun!

Motorman.......heres what I did.
This dounled my exit size. Ran perfect today.
As I looked the plane over, and checked bolts and all.........the retracts had some play when down, so per instructions, I tightened the allen bolt in front. I left a tiny amount of free play. Very tiny. I expect until the gear gets broke in real good, itll need adjusting a few more times. No other problems noticed.[8D]

If you must shoot a plane out of a tree, don't shoot the plane. I removed a Funtana that had been in a tree for a week with a .22 mag. Took out the limbs that held it.

Bignasdy,
I get what you meant now. Did you glue a big piece of 1" triangle stock on the inside first, so the sheeting is tied some structure before you add the notch. I hope I don't have to rework that too.
With the Saito 1.00 in the stock position, I hope to get away with just opening up the bottom. I plan on opening up 1 clyinder on the fake engine and the bottom vents. I should have 2-1 for the airflow.
