Default Hangar 9 80" Cap 232

Anybody got any complaints/advice. Mine is almost finished w/a Fox 3.2. Basically, just programming left to do. Had to chop the firewall some, but I boxed and glassed it. I had read a thread about the landing gear being soft-anybody know where I can buy stronger aftermarket gear for it? Thanks all.

Specs.

Hangar 9 Cap 232
Fox 3.2 Gas Burner
Harris Smoke system
Futaba 8UAP/JR servos
Titanium Pro Links
3D Aluminum Arms.
Coated Kevlar Pull-Pull (dons hobbies)
Cool scale pilot (dons also)
Tru-Turn

I know that optimal power would be a moki 2.10 for 3D but you would drink alot of glow fuel. So then you go to gas, you will probably get alot of people telling you that a G45 is no good, to heavy bla, bla bla. Yes a G45 is 9 to 12 ounces heavier then a 40 or 50cc engine but everything I have read says it will pull it nicely. The question you have to ask is do I want to do wild 3D? Do I want to use this plane in the advanced and unlimited class of IMAC? If no then a G45 would be a trouble free nice engine. If you awnsered yes to any of those questions then you should get a performace engine in the 50 to 52cc range(BME, DA, Taurus, 3W, ZDZ, Brison, FPE, Fox, ect.) I am going to be flying the Intermediate class in IMAC this year and that class doesnt have any vertical snaps or other manuvers that would take a ton of power. So I am going to put my ZDZ 40 in it and have fun. I hope this helps

Mine is virtually finished and very light............of course it's missing the DA50 that should have been here by now!

You want complaints/advise?

Ailerons not double beveled
Elevators hit the fuse at full deflection(check and adj yours before gluing hinges)
$500 for a plane of this size we should have hardware
Hate the love relationship between H9 and JR

Plane looks great though and cant wait to fly it if I could just get a darn engine.

I have one with a G 45 in it. It hovers great, beautiful harriers, etc. Its a really nice plane. i think it would do well at IMAC meets, but I'm going to use my GP Wagstaff for that. I feel the H9 80" CAP is one of the best planes I've ever flown.

AeroDave
Do you have any other comparisons or suggestions between the PW Extra and H9 Cap? I have the PW (which flys great) and I'm considering buying the H9 80" Cap. Which one is your favorite and why? What did your H9 Cap weigh? Any advise would be helpful.

Default H9 80' CAP

FormerCA,
I also have a FOX3.2 to put on my CAP. I havent gotton to the motor yet. I've just started on the wing. Getting ready to glur the halves together. Why did you have to alter the motor box and what did you do? I'm a little concerned with the talk of flutter. I also used 7 hinges on each aileron. Instead of the supplyied hinges I used B&B CA hinges. Do you or anyone think this will be OK or should I have used Robart hingepoints. I'm using JR8411's throughout and am rigging the rudder for pull-pull. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I plan on using 2 NiMH and 2 switches. Is this overkill?

Default H9 JR

Daveham, i don't think hanger 9 and JR have any ties, its just the fact that Horizon is the importer for both, you could say the same for Hanger 9 and Zenoah on the same grounds. its the same in the UK. one importer has Futaba, Kyosho and MDS, another OS, Hirobo and Sanwa. they both 'recomend' THEIR products. its very rare that ONE importer has all the brands of your own liking, you just shop round. Combo's seldom contain what you would choose, a lot of combo's are put together to try and move a sticking product from the importer. ( what was this thread about ? ) oh yes, power for the 80" cap? NOT A CLUE, i had a YS 140 on the 1/4 scale and i've got the ZDZ 80 twin on my 1/3rd scale. i'd probably go with the ZDZ 50.

Default ...

Tailskid-I had thought about the Zenoah 45 but talked to people who had them on other planes, they said that the 45 was a nice user friendly engine but kinda heavy and low on power when compared to the sachs. I dont do any competetive flying-bt still wanted decent vertical so I went w/Fox. Good customer service and quick turnaround/parts.

Anthony1- You know on those Pitts type muffs, the canister goes behind the engine and then down and out, the firewall wouldn't accomodate this so I had to take out about 1" X 1", then I boxed and glassed it for added strength. I didn't have to cut the cowl up too bad to allow this combo-looks nice.

Question for you guys who have had flutter-did you seal the hinge gaps? What kinda linkage do you have and what servo are you running?

Any one know where I can get some STONG aftermarket Landing Gear for this aircraft????

Dont know how much she weighs yet-that could be todays project!

Default Hangar 9 80" Cap 232

Texas,
The PW is a really neutral aircraft, as Extras tend to be. Its also very stable and carves really good, straight lines. Mine has a G62 on it so its a bit heavy. It hovers at abut 1/4 throttle, so when you hit the throttle in a hover it REALLy shoots up. Still, the way I have it set up it is a bit heavy. the CAP has over 100 more Sq in of wing area and mine is at least a pound lighter than Patty. Its hard to put into words, but the cap just feels more responsive. Like a good funfly with the CG just right. Another thing, its the easiest ship to do accurate 8 point rolls I've ever flown. both are great aircraft, I just like the CAp better.

The G45 is a good choice for this airplane. Still it doesn't shoot out of a hover, etc. It is realy user friendly.

Default Recommended Servos

The manual recommends at a minimum servos with 80 oz . This type of plane with enlarged control surfaces in my opinion should have more then the minimum. I am going to be running JR8411's all the way around. I dont want to loose the plane because of servo failure.

Do you think JR's 8108's will do the trick? I also have two 2721's - was thinking of putting them on the elevators....maybe they should go on the ailerons?

Thanks for the comparison. I have a BME 50 in my PW. I really like the looks of the H9 Cap 232 and it looks like the it might come out a little lighter than the PW. My PW came out at 15lbs 8oz with no effort to save weight. I have another BME 50 sitting on the shelf and she needs a home badly. I think the one piece wing and lack of a plug in tail will help this plane to weigh less.

Default Hangar 9 80" Cap 232

I am currently putting one of these 80" H9-CAP 232 together for the frequent eye-hand coordination practice required to fly heavy reseach planes. I have a choice of either a RCS - 44 twin or a 3W-48 twin for the plane. The 3W-48 is more powerful by a significant amount. The RCS - 44 turns a 20 x 8 @ 6700 rpms while the 3W-48 turns a 22 x 10 @ 6800 rpms. Both engines weigh about the same with the 3W a few oz heavier.

I would like advice about the better of these 2 engines for the 80" cap airframe. I like power but too much defeats the purpose.

Thanks Elson

If you are looking for aftermarket landing gear I would recommend TNT. The make some very nice polished aluminum gear. Very strong as well.

Default Hangar 9 80" Cap 232

Just bought one of these for power with a strong Moki 2.10, but Ive got a couple of questions that my LHS couldnt answer.

1-Saw in an earlier post that the ailerons are not beveled. I assume you can still get enough throw for 3D. Will 6-7 Robart 1/4 scale hinges per surface be enough!

2-Petty, but are those Airitalia stickers factory applied, and if so how hard would they be to remove.

3-Are the tail feathers "airfoiled" or just stick construction, and furthermore are they fully sheeted? Also are you guys running pull-pull or a single rudder servo in the tail.

4-What is the problem with the stock gear. IS it the mounting system, or the gear itself that is weak.

Thanks for all the info, trying to get mine airborne before it gets too nice!!!!!

I've got a kevlar coated pull-pull on mine(dons hobbies) w/a quarter scale servo for rudder. Have not flown it but someone said that the gear was soft-dont know yet.

KabarAV8,

The ailerons are beveled but the wing is not. No way your going to get 45* of throw, 30* would be pushing it. I haven't flown mine yet so cant say if it's enough.

The alitalia stickers are already applied, I removed the ID #'s on the rear of the fuse. They came off pretty easy, just use a razor blade to lift a corner and peal away.

The tail is air-foiled and fully sheeted. Just check to make sure your elev halves clear the fuse bottom at max deflection. Mine hit the fuse and was glued in before I checked this. I did not use the ca hinges. Pull/pull for rudder.

Don't know about the gear yet but is seams strong, time will tell though. I finally got the DA50 but all this rain has kept me from doing anything.

Dave,

Thanks for all the intel, cant wait to get mine! (Wed. hopefully)
I guess the 30 deg. aileron throw is plenty since alot of guys are 3Ding with this bird. The Moki should be a good powerplant, just lots of 5% fuel. Any other hits or misses you can think of let me know, cant wait for a flight report! Keep me posted.

Is it just coincidence or is the Midwest cap and Hangar nine cap the same basic plane? Lets see, they have the exact same dimensions; both have a one piece wing, and both were esigned by Mike McConville! The stickler in all this is that you couldnt build the Midwest kit with fiberglass cowl and pants for the price of the Hangar 9!!!

Default AeroDave Questions:

Just want to make sure I understood your post correctly.

to summarize:

The PW feels more locked in which helps you pull consistent correctly formed IMAC maneuvers.

The Cap is more lively. Which makes it more fun to fly, but tougher to "nail" consistent maneuvers, or even the straight line between the maneuvers.

Is that a correct summary?

If so, have you tried adding any weight to the C.G? Or moving the C.G. forward/up/down?

Also have you tried waterfalls or inverted flat spins with the Cap yet? If so how did it feel? how much elevator did it take to go totally flat?

I'm just starting to plan the modifications for my Cap and your input would be a real help.

If it's any consolation, My 1.20 size Cap 232 is lively too in comparison to the Giles or Extra. I think it's the nature of the "beast", and loads of fun to bore holes in the sky.

Thanks,

Scott

Default H9 80" CAP

Hi guy's,

I just glued my wing halves together. seemed OK until I placed the wing in the saddle. It seems a little lop sided, it rocks in the saddle. Has anyone esle had this problem? I made sure that the wing was flush all around the seam. What should I do? Can this be fixed? If so, HOW?

Thanks

AnthonyI
