RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Brian, that's a pretty sweet job you did on it. Can you give any more details on your landing light and it's installation?

Nice work hill202 and Brian.
I went to the club mall show saturday. What a way to carry a cub! :D Sea Commanders float cradle. [8D] Bud |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Brian,
Great job! Where did you get that pilot? George |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Bud and Brian, they are looking good. I can't wait to hear some flight reports.
I started my 160 for the first time a few minutes ago and wow! that thing runs great. Very smooth. It idles so low its unbelievable. I went with the MPI on-board glow and so far it seems to be working great. I lowered my tank as Pettit recommended and seems to be fine. Brian, I have been following this thread for quite some time as well. If you notice I first inquired on this thread in 2004. I settled with the clipped wing version, could'nt stand the wait any longer. Good Luck to both of you. Joe |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Thanks for the compliments everybody! I got the idea for the landing light from a Model Airplane News article some time ago. I simply made a cut out in the wing about 3 1/4 wide by about 1 1/4 deep. I framed the cut out with 1/8 light ply. I bought a pair of key chain flashlights from the dollar store. I used the lenses, and tossed the rest of them in the trash. I then made a 1/16 ply plate and glued the lenses to that after cutting the correct size hole. That assembly is then bolted to the light ply frame work. I used thin plastic sheet for the outer lens cover, and screwed it down with painted #0 screws. The lights are from RAM. I cant remember what part number they are, I want to say #129 maybe. It only took an evening to do, and I think it makes the plane look less like and ARF. Another question was about the pilot. I bought it here on RCU. I think it was made by a company called Pilots by Dianne. All I know is he fits pretty well, and looks way cool! I also lowered the tank floor for the OS 160. It worked out well, I used a Dubro 16oz tank, and the pilots legs go beside the tank. I also built a Carden Extra 260 this winter, but I think I am more excited to fly the Cub! My buddy has the clipped wing version and I have flown that a bunch. Its great, but there is still something about a big yellow Cub! Thanks again.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
bj is it orange have not seen a red one and the cost to 72150
when you are ready to sell the yellow one let me know thanks frank |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
If you're planning on using the Keleo exhaust be sure to order at the beginning of the assembly process. There is a 4 to 6 week wait on the exhaust systems. I waited until the end to order. Luckily he had one in stock and is shipping to me next week. He builds these to order and is busy.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Frank
I'm sure he's talking about one like mine. In some photos it looks kind of orange. I'm like alot of others, that big yellow cub looks great but the clipped wing really looks nice. I've got to put the exhaust on ( when it arrives) and glue in the windows and I'll post a picture of it completed. I saw your exhaust. You got that here on RCU did'nt you? Good luck Hill |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill,
Where could i get more information on the engine mount you used? Ive looked and can't find it anywhere. Looks like you have done a nice job! Thanks |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I looked too and found the site. www.swbmfg.com
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Yes thats the place. The mounts have a selection of spacers that you combine to come up with the length you need.
Thanks for the compliments Hill |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
rcu bargain and the same guy had the blue clipped wing too been chasing it all over the USA to buy it and always late:), someday these will cool off and get in stock frank

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Looks like once the windows are glued in there is very little room to reach inside for maintenance. If you follow the plans you are only able to reach thru the top window. Has anyone screwed the windows in instead of glueing?
Maybe just attach the front windshield with screws at least you could then get two hands inside. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill,
It looks as if they supply different sets of engine mounts. Which set did you end up ordering? In a couple of review articles I read they kept all windows off just because of that reason. Although it is a little difficult to get your hands inside, I think the windows are a must. :-) Thanks for all the helpful info. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
I glued in my rear windows and left the side windows out. The front window is screwed in.

I ordered the 1-1/2 - 1-15/16 stand offs and used all of the spacers so the measurement for mine ending up being 1-15/16. I read that not every plane has the same measurments. I mounted the cowl and measured from the firewall to the cowl and added 1/8 inch. Then I measured the depth of the engine with the mounting plate attached and the difference was the size standoff I ordered. Hope that helps Hill |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Since I'm ripping the covering off of mine to do silk and dope, I'm going to cut in the door for access and better appearance.

Flyn,
Keleo exhaust arrived yesterday. He does real good work. The fit was perfect. I still have not glued in the side windows. I think I am going to attach them with screws. I have screwed on the front windshield. As I said earlier if you're going with the keleo exhaust order now, there is a four to six week wait. I think this exhaust actually made the twin sound better, if thats possible. The toggle switch you see is for the on-board glow driver. I have no idea why I mounted there  Post some pictures of yours when you can. |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill,
Thanks for the fast response. That looks great!! Again, looks as if you did an outstanding job. I actually ordered my 1.60 twin yesterday and should receive it middle of next week. I just got off the phone with Keleo and he said there was one more left, so I ordered that today! :-) My bird is not as far along as yours is but I will post some pictures. Ill take them tonight. What spinner are you going to use? The Vortech? Are you planning on turning a 18x6? Cheers |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
a shame you have to cowl that beautiful work of are up.

RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Your exit hole, as a rule, needs to be twice the size of your air inlets.
I wouldn't take the chance of not cutting them, that motor is too expensive.] Really depends on how "scale" you want to be. When your running rich it wont matter that much, but after you get it tuned you run the risk of shortening the life of your twin without a place for that hot air to go. Here's what I did on mine. If you look close you can see the opening, similar to the real one. Cut it at the firewall area from exhaust over.

Okay, here it is. Maiden tomorrow weather permitting.
The book says balance range is 4" thru 4-7/8 " behind leading edge. It says the ideal cg is 4-3/8". Mine balanced at 4-1/4". I should be okay, right? This was without adding any weight. The book also says to program in quite a bit of differeintial. Alieron throws are 1 3/8" up and 1/2 " down. Thats alot of differential. I have never used that much before. Looks kind of strange. Any comments? The struts are going to be time consuming to put on at the field but they look nice. Any comments or tips regarding the maiden are welcome |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Hill, nice job, good luck with your maiden, it should be uneventful as this is a great flying airplane. The CG where you have it should be fine, also why do you have to assemble the struts? I have the full wing version and leave them on all the time, disconnecting/connecting only at the fuselage. I reinforced the bottom half of the kit box with duct tape and lined the floor surface with medium foam and now use it to transport and store the wings on edge and it's a perfect fit! By the way I don't use differential on mine, I mixed 12% rudder with aileron and that takes care of any yawing.
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
the masters is in rain delay , we have a master rcer here in hill202
|
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
Thanks Orvel, good idea on the struts. I have 20% rudder mixed in. I think I'm going to do away with the differential. If it yaws ,I'll lean on the left stick a little.
Thanks Frank but I don't know about " master rcer". Its 5:00 am and I'm on RCU, I never sleep well the night before a maiden. I went over the maiden flight a hundred times in my mind :D |
RE: Dave Patrick super cub
you will be fine, dont forget to check all the good stuff, range check, servos, screws, throws, battery volts, air pressure in tires , i mean every thing[&:], right now this is the best looking plane in the USA,get it up and down, it will be a head turner frank
