Based on your original post a viable option would be a 1/4 scale Hangar 9 cub with a DLE 30 cc gas engine.
It was explained to me that a cub wouldnt be a good trainer to get. that it was in fact not a trainer at all. I wanted to get one to begin with cause its a scale plane.

I am a warbird flyer. The Hangar 9 cub is the best training plane I have ever had to teach people how to fly. It is slow and visible, performs well in wind up to about 12 mph and is very forgiving of over controlling students. (Parts are also readily available!!)

What is being left out is the fact that this recomendation to use not only a Cub but a larger (in itself spells money especially when you first crash it and you will) one that is predicated upon The use of a buddy cord with an instructor. That will certainly be far more than just a few trim flights you have to ask yourself are you really gonna take all the advice to get help yourself?

You really avoided that so please correct me if I am wrong I beleve you are gonna go off alone and go for it. That would be a really big mistake with any cub and most certainly a big money hole with a large Cub gas whatever.

Yeah I deffinately dont want something that big, and with you slapping me in the back of the head every so often saying no to stuff to big to soon. I'm really staying the course, in fact I just put my order in for the Kadet LT-40 kit. Like I said I want a plane that I can learn with and the rest of my family as well. So thanks for keeping me level headed.

I'm not gonna go it completely alone. I have clubs around me but the one I want to go to doesnt meet until the end of the month. I'm thinking of stopping by and checking it out and going from there. Problem is that my schedule is awkward and I cantmeet on aconsistant basis.

You did make a good choice. So many options these days. You will be happy with your engine. They have a lot of power and are very reliable and easy to operate.

Hello, I'm extremely interested in getting started in flying RC Planes but dont want to waste my money on a foolish purchase. I currently own a RC Chopper and a DX7s...........

...........I know everyone says join a club and stuff and thats fine because I have plenty around me but like i said I would like to build my own plane and then visit with a club once i finish building it. That being said I would like to find a decent trainer with 4 channels and something I wont get bored with easily. Seeing how I am comfortable flying a CP helicotper I'm pretty sure I will be able to handle a lil more then your average beginner.
Having been in your situation (I went from nitro CP heli's to planes), I would NOT look at a trainer at all. IF a local club has an in-house trainer for noob's to learn on, have a couple of flights on that first, as the feel of the trainer is a little different to the sim - as I found.
Now the reason I say don't buy one, was that within less that 2 minutes of flying my one for the first time, I knew I wanted more as the trainer just felt numb and very dull to me (nitro CP heli pilot remember).
After the trainer was squashed by a falling bookshelf from one of the earthquakes we had down here (a year ago Dec 23rd), I got a little Yak54 and set it up as a low wing trainer (in that the control surfaces are reduced to almost nothing), and found that a much better option moving forward.
Not only did I get something to learn tail dragger skills on (next step is a gas powered P51), I liked the way it felt in the air a heck of a lot more than I did with the high wing trainer in that I had to fly it, just like I do with my heli - I guess it offered a more familiar feel, well to me at least.
The other beauty with going that route (tuned down Yak or alike), is that the plane is as tame as YOU want it to be, and as you grow, then you can just reset your travel limits on the TX, and you have a whole different plane, which in turn saves me having to buy yet another plane later on, which to me makes a hell of a lot more sense!

Thanks for all the advice guys.... just placed order directly from Sig's website for the kit, dope, rubber foam and some CA joints for a different project... lol I was $0.50 short of 150 to get the free shipping so thats why I added the CA joints.

I'm going to order the rest of the stuff I need probably from Tower Hobbies. I was gonna order as much as I could from that wholesaletrains site but i noticed it was a bit shady and then after some searching I saw like 9 bad reviews out of 10. So I'll spend the extra money I would have saved at a reputable dealer.

What else am I gonna need? I will be purchasing the .55AX for sure but after that I dunno what to get. What else do I need for the engine does it come with everything to run it?

I know I need 4 servos (im doing dual airleons) a reciever...

Props....

anyone got a good link to hardware setup and how it all goes together?<br type="_moz" />

I think youll be oversized with the 55AX, but hey! Medium fuel line, 1/4" foam rubber, extra props, extra OS number 8 glow plugs, servo extensions, Y connector, covering, a bunch of tools, a flat bench and beer.

55 AX is too big for a .40 size trainer. I'm a fan of the Thunder Tiger .46 PRO. It's still more powerful than you'll need, but it's a very reliable engine with excellent throttle response and good power for its weight. It will serve you well when you get ready to put together a .40 size sport plane or fly a warbird on 2 stroke power.

Ok I will go with the .46 then... I have the whole tim allen "more power" syndrome lol.<div>
</div><div>Would you suggest getting analog or digital servos?  I know the difference between the to but didn't know if this would be overkill for a trainer that I assume wouldn't need such precision.</div><div>
</div><div>Here's the two I am looking at... also any other suggestions would be appreciated.  </div><div>
</div><div>Digital</div><div>http://www.advantagehobby.com/114216/SPMSA6000/?quantity=4</div><div>
</div><div>Analog</div><div>http://www.advantagehobby.com/178334/SPMSA6050/?quantity=4</div><div>
</div><div>I am planning on doing dual ailerons and would like to have the ability to use flaperons.  When setting this up would it be better to have both aileron servos on the one channel via y cable or would it be better to have each aileron on its own channel?</div><div>
</div><div>The reason I ask is cause the spektrum reciever is 30 bucks for a 4 channel... like 60 for a 6 channel</div>

If you want to do flapperons ( in the future) you will need a seperate channel & servo for each aileron. I use flapperons on most all of my fun fly models & even on my Avistar trainer. However, you probably wont want to mess with them while you are learning to fly....Gene

PS, im useing Futaba 3004 servos in my fun fly planes & my trainer & they are not didigital & only cost $12 thru Tower. You dont need to spend alot of money at the stage you are at on servos.

Ok thanks Gene I would however like to have everything installed in the begining so I wont have to tear my plane apart trying to do stuff i should have just done in the first place.  You know do it right the first time.   Here is the shopping list I have put together so far... what am i missing?<div><font size="3">

These are my personal favorites in a standard size and they among the most bomb proof ever. Digitals will buy you absolutely nothing in a trainer or at this stage of your development.

http://www.advantagehobby.com/44846/HRC31422S/?pcat=294

As far as the set up of the ailerons it is most common these days is two aileron servos and they are plugged into separate channnels and thats fine however programing flaps for use in a trainer is completely pointless and agine will buy you nothing that will be apparent to you but what it will buy is a more difficult airplane to land and once agine we have a case where the fellows just have to have all the so called secrets and it will only hinder their climb up that skills ladders. No matter what you think your abilities are.

If you really want to learn and acheve flight skills then flaps on a trainer are counter productive and will only slow down your climb up that airmanship ladder.

You still need a transmitter & a charger for the trans & reciever battery, a spinner, glo starter of some type, possibly a 12v battery and electric starter, or chicken stik, fuel...just off the top of my head....Gene

I would suggest you not use the typical plastic spinners that are included with the kit or an arf. These have many problems and the new fellow soon end up discarding them.

Instead use a spinner nut like these:

http://www.advantagehobby.com/24494/DUB730/

Machined out out of aluminium they look far better and are far more functional making prop change in the field far easier. This is especially important for a trainer.

The spinner nuts do works and they are trouble free, but the plastic ones also work. I use both depending on the plane and don't have any trouble. For an all plastic spinner, take a piece of open mesh plumber's sandcloth or drywall sander and make a washer to go between the back plate and prop. 99% of the problems people report with plastic spinners are from the prop turning and breaking the spinner. With the washer and proper torque, that won't happen.

On your list, the latter 2 props are too big. Get a few 11x5 APC or MAS props and call it good. There's really no reason to experiment on that. An electric starter and battery for it will save you untold headaches so I'll recommend one (it doesn't matter which one you buy. They all work). A field box/tool box is very handy stocked with every kind of spare fastener you might need along with a bottle of thin and medium CA, some clear packing tape (for covering repairs in the field) and a set of basic hand tools will save your flying day occasionally. You'll also need a glow driver and charger for it.

I saw your comment about wholesaletrains and just wanted to add the following:

I've ordered from wholesaletrains on many occasions http://www.wholesaletrains.com/ and never had any complaints. Their prices are good and their delivery has always been satisfactory. The only complaint I have is that your shopping cart gets emptied occasionally. When I want something, I have a tendency to place the order in my shopping cart. It may take weeks to fill the cart so I can take advantage of things like free shipping or other promotions. On the wholesaletrains site, they will empty your cart occasionally; thereby causing you to lose the list of items that you wanted. I have discussed this with them and been told "this is just the way our software works". I think they are working on this, but it was not fixed on my last order. Still, all in all, I shop there often - even if I do forget to order things that I really wanted.

I just read horrible reviews and then it said If I joined their club that was free I would get club member discounts. I did what it said and it had me put bogus credit card stuff in and then it never gave me club pricing. Just a really crappy website even if they do send your orders. I dunno I just dont get a good vibe from the site so I'm passing on it.
