Carl,
I basically taught myself to fly, the best info I can give is to get a good simulator and fly it for as long
as you can stand not flying the real thing. I flew mine for at least 20 hours before attempting to
fly my real plane. Also do not go out alone to fly, you don't have to carry a instructor but just
carry someone to help in case of a medical emergency or incase another problem occurs.
Fly where there is no one or thing to get in the way or to get hurt. This is the best advice
that I have to give. Happy flying!

Carl, Boy some of these guys get nasty don't they!! I am in the same boat you are in, Teaching myself how to fly. I have had my share of bumps and burses and it would sure be nice to have an instructer handy to help out but there just isn't one close enough to just run over and get a few lessons. What I have read is sure good to hear. The part about moving the stick toward the low wing on approach is a good and easy tip, easy on the sticks and don't panic is good also, I tired that right after I read it and it isn't that hard to get used to. The landing tips you are getting are sure nice for me. I read one post of a beginner asking for help and all he got was abuse, that is not what he was asking for, he needed some how to instructions and that is what you got. Good job guys.

glope, the reason those asking for help with teaching themselves to fly get som much static is simply because noone wants to aid in another person getting hurt. These planes are not toys, and are in fact quite dangerous when not handled properly. The one main thing I or anyone else cannot stress enough, is that if you insist on attempting to fly on your own, is to do it in the middle of nowhere so that you cannot hurt anyone else or their property. If you understand the risks to you and your money invested, that's your choice to make. Just don't go and get some innocent bystander involved.

Just my $0.02

Thanks for all the tips. I am going to go and fly my plane today. I'll let you know how I get on. Camera is coming too, and bin bag.

In reply to all the people who are saying things like "get an instructor" and "you'll crash" and "make sure youre in a safe area"

DO YOU NOT THINK I KNOW THIS YOU GIMPS!!!!!!!!!

I JUST DONT WANT TO. No offence to the club members, but I'm 24 and all my local club members are 50+ year old guys. I like to hang out with my mates (of my age) not a load of guys sat in a caravan waiting for their turn to fly. Like I say no offence meant.

Oh and if you read the original post it said POSITIVE comments. SO can the guys who left negative comments please read the title of the post before opening their traps. Cheers.

Right off to fly I go. Let you know how I go.

Regards

Good luck!

I taught myself, and it was a long, hard, expensive process.... That ended up being one of the best things I've ever done in my life. [8D]

I understand wanting to hang out with your own crowd/age group... but I think you'll find a lot of those old RC plane guys are fun to hang out with and learn from, especially if you really want to learn about RC planes. My club is the same way. If it were me, I'd spend a few weekends hanging out with the old guys at the club, learning to fly, and keeping my only plane in one piece, and then show off to my buddies what I can do. Maybe even teach them how to fly after I've gotten more experience.

Having one of those "old guys" on a buddy box save your ***** from one stupid mistake can save you hundreds of dollars (euros, pounds,...) and many hours of rebuilding time. You'll learn much quicker because you'll stay in the air much longer, and because you'll have experienced advice by your side.

BTW, I consider this positive advice because I'm positive that you'd be much happier getting in several flights on a buddy box and then soloing, than you will rebuilding your first plane after the maiden flight.

Anyway, I wish you luck in your attempt, regardless of my opinion about it!

Carl,
I'm 14! Most of the people at my field are 60+! Some down to their 30's and my best friend who started flying when I did iss 14 too.. I love to just sit there and talk to those guys! They have some of the funniest stories you'll ever hear! And if I crashed, any one of them would be willing to help me fix/buy anything I needed. Don't let your ego get in the way of your/our fun!

Carl,
Your attitude sucks,,, I hope you either change your attitude or get out of the sport. Im 37,, you punk. And these "gimps" are trying to help your stupid English Butt by telling you the truth and saving you some money and disappointment. This is the 1st time I have felt the need to comment like this, but you are a punk if you really are what your last comment stated...

Send film,,, its going to be a PLEASURE seeing you crash and burn.

If you change your attitude Id be glad to help you.

Hi people,

I'm new to the site. What a mine of info. Top site!!!!!

Anyway,

I've just dug my old Precedent Hi Boy out of the loft and bought some radio gear for it. I have never flown it as I was side tracked when I discovered golf a few weeks later.

I am now getting bored of golfing twice a week so am going to try and learn to fly my plane on my local sands (which are massive for safety and freedom to land anywhere), on my own.

I would be greatful for any positive advice or answers to the following. I have read the previous post regarding this matter but there are just a few other questions I would like to know.

1. On the ground, how fast does a plane need to be going before the rudder will turn it ?

2. How far back from the leading edge should the C of G be on this plane (with an empty tank). I have lost the instructions.

3. I built the plane when I was 15 and in a rush to build it. The film covering looks rough in places and the tail plane is on a slight slope to the fuselage (approx 2 or 3 degrees sag to the right). Will any of these factors have any adverse effects on the plane?

4. Tips on take off and landing.

Please, please give me some positive advise. Save me the "you need to get lessons", I like a challenge and feel confident. I'm a joiner by trade so repairs are no probs.

Thanks in advance to all the replies

Regards

Carl
1. In a vacum, a millionth of a degree will turn it.
2. Should balance on or near the spar
3. you'll never even notice, but you will have something to blame a crash on.
4. Don't stall it.

That's really all you need to know. Now get out there and solo baby.

Good Luck on your attempt. As far as positive tips...keep your head down, left arm straight, and swing through.

Big Ned... You nailed it.
I figured I might try to help the KID out, but with such a rotten attitude, no way.
Try playing polo or cricket Carl.

Carl,

How did the flight go?

Anyone want to start a poll on how sucessful or un-sucessful the maiden flight was for Carl?

1) Flawless flight with 3pt landing

2) Flipped on landing (plane okay)

3) Lost control in air (dumb thunbed it in the ground)

4) Crashed on takeoff

I will populate this poll by selecting a (1) -- Good job ole chap.

O-K- So I looked up the word gimp- As it turned out their are several possibilities so we can all choose a different one if we like..

1- A limp or a limping gait. # A person who limps]
2- Spirit; pep.
3- A narrow flat braid or rounded cord of fabric used for trimming. Also called guimpe, guipure.

4- \Gimp\, n. [OF. guimpe, guimple, a nun's wimple, F. guimpe, OHG. wimpal a veil G. wimpel pennon, pendant. See Wimple, n.] A narrow ornamental fabric of silk, woolen, or cotton, often with a metallic wire, or sometimes a coarse cord, running through it; -- used as trimming for dresses, furniture, etc. Gimp nail, an upholsterer's small nail.

5- \Gimp\, v. t. To notch; to indent; to jag
6- \Gimp\, a. [W. gwymp fair, neat, comely.] Smart; spruce; trim; nice. [Obs. or Prov. Eng.]
7- n : disability of walking due to crippling of the legs or feet [syn: lameness, limping,

I hurt my knee so I had to gimp to the kitchen to get some ice- I used a cup with a gimp on the lip and filled it up to the gimp. I had to gimp carefully back to the den but in doing so I tore the gimp on a nearby chair and tripped. As I fell the gimp on my cup caught a gimp on my coat and ripped it off-

Darn this gimp.....

To me, flyng is only a fraction of this hobby, the climactic part, surely, but a fraction none-the-less. I think I would get bored if all I did was fly. The other part of the hobby is the social part, the helping others part, the building/modifying part, the "Which plane to I buy next" part, watching others enjoy the hobby, etc. If he doesn't want to hang out with the GIMPS - my guess is that after a couple months of rebuil......I mean flying, he'll get bored with it and go back to golf.

From the attitude on Carls second post, I'd say that right about now his pride is hurting as he makes his way back to the car with splinters in hand after the walk of shame. The sad part is that I bet he didn't learn a damned thing from it. I'm curious to see if he comes back and post anything about his flight, but either way I bet he'll put a good spin on what actually happened.
