Next I cut the opening in the bottom of the wing sheeting to frame the servo mount tray. Picture is a little fuzzy but I think you can see what I did. The opening in the wing sheeting is framed with lite ply all around and then backed to the servo mount tray with 1/4" x 1/4" balsa shaped to fit. Then I added sheeting balsa strips from the servo tray plywood to the wing sheeting on the inside, then glued in the tray doublers as well on the back.

Had to start thinking about joining the wing and a place to set it while it dries. Well the only spot I have big enough that would support the entire wing flat on the top side, with the exception of the floor, is my pool table. Can't get much flatter than that. Covered it up with some drop cloth and the wing just fits. Placed both wing sides on the table to check for proper base angles and matching joints. To my delight the joints matched up pretty good. Might be a little sanding at the base to make the seam even better but not much. Here's a few pictures of the wing on the table. I still need to do some more finish sanding and a dry fit on the wing joiner before gluing this together, hopefully get most of that done tomorrow and maybe glue it up this weekend.

bar98, Nice job on those wings. Looks like you are just about about ready. Just curious, how or what did you use to replace the sheer webs that are in line with you wing tube location? Will this mod weaken the wing or does the tube itself makeup for it? I've heard of others doing the same thing but havnt seen any pics except yours.
Thanks,
Bob

Bob, I did some mods replacing the main spruce spars with basswood, this will save some weight. The wing tube is about 1 inch and is strong enough to replace the big and heavy plywood that joins the wings panels. I cut pieces of basswood and filled the space between the wing tube and the main spars, then I glue four pieces of share webs on each side, it goes from the top of the main spars to the to of the wing tube, same thing on the bottom. Then I filled any gap between the wing tube and the share webs with epoxy. It is very strong.

That sounds great, wish I had thought of that before building the wing. AS it is I am just about ready to glue the wing togeather. Oh well, live and learn, thats what it's all about ain't it.

I found a guy that did similar job. I don't want to buy a bigger car to fit the plane in it. This was my major reason. But is very straight forward, and the panels join together very well.
I will be following this thread to share some ideas.

Just bought some Hitech 6985HB Karbonite gear servo's last week (brainfart), and then did the research only to find out that Hitech does not recommend them on a plane over 12 lbs. unless the servo's are used in multiples per surface, or a gas engine. Man, how did I miss this one? Have to send them back now, don't want to chance a stripped servo on a new bird. Glad I found this out now!!

Whoa digger am sure glad you seen that thread on the servos ,that would be a disaster, while the servos you mentioned work good in smaller birds they wont handle the big stuff .Thats why I choose 645 MG 107 oz torque ,if them babies strip out well I don't think i'll need to worry about the rest of the plane *L* Its done been rekitted .
I thought hard about the 2 piece wing but I cant find the cardboard wing tubes ,I have Alum tube from another wing 1 inch that would work fine but nothing to hold it in the wings .Maybe next time.
Painting a plane is nice but its more work than I'm willing to do ,plus you have the extra weight .
Anyway keep up the good work ,be looking back in soon.

Hi Digger
I saw that you bevel the trailing edge of the wing which looks much better, do you plan to do this also on the horizontal stab?
Thanks,
Bar98

bar98, I am planning on the tapered horizontal stab. For some reason I wanted to wait until I did the wing.
I finally glued the wing together on the pool table and the results were good. Robarts meters were off by 1/2 to 1 degree tip to tip after the glue dried.
Ok, finally the pics ar acting right.

Sorry everyone, some reason these pics are coming off way too large. This is a pic of the wing after drilling the 1/2" mount holes.I used a rubber band around the drilll bit to guage the depth to 1/2".

Does anyone know if something is going on here with the pictures. These pics all have the same res and one will load full exploded full size and the next will be ok? Just curious because this is strange. The full size pic is 3072x2048 original. The smaller ones have been resized on the upload to 100x150. Why are some of them resizing and others not?

After cutting , applied the bolt head plates leaving enough room to trim the trailing edge to better fit the fuselage.
Added B1 to the front of the wing and glued in place.

Hopefully these pics will be normal size. After drilling wing, I prepped it for the center section glass by tap the boundries with blue painters tape. Hopefully this will prevent making a mess and having to do a lot of sanding to clean it up.. I streached the glass cloth out and tacked with CA in position.

Next, I mixed up some 30 min. epoxy and began spreading on the cloth with the mixing stick. Found one of those fake credit cards everyone gets in the mail and used it to work in the epoxy until the cloth was saturated. I think I found that tip here on RCU in one of the other build threads, works well to smoothe the surface as well as remove the excess epoxy after it has been worked in. After glassing both sides of the wing I removed the painters tape before the epoxy sets. This being the first attempt at glassing, I thought it was failly easy. I did have some sanding to do on the edges on one side becaust the tape was to tight to the edge of the cloth causing a small lip to form.

After the glassing was dried(next day), placed the wing on the fuselage and measured to assure centering and the right angle on each side to the fuse and clamped in place. Drilled the holes into the fuse for the wing bolts through the wing. Next step wil be building the belly pan.
