Hello, I have a question i'm a beginnerand want to fly slow. I bought a plane with gear drive 25.1. Will this make it slower or faster? Should I just mount the prop to the motor?
Thanks,
Nelson.

Much more info is needed.
What plane is it?
what motor, battery, esc, prop, etc?
Is the gear drive possibly a 2.5 to 1 ratio gear reduction? I'm not sure what 25.1 means.
If it is a gear reduction it will slow the prop in relation to the motor.

You should leave it like it is. This is the way it was designed to fly.
Note: I'm assuming you have bought a Ready-to-Fly plane. these are all pre-engineered to operate properly and modifications take a little more thought than this.
Changing props or eliminating gearboxes can overload (or underload) a motor. Changing a motor can cause a need for a different speed controller (ESC) and/or battery pack. Changing battery packs can cause a need for an entirely different type of battery charger. Not doing any of these can cause a need for a new plane.[:@]

Welcome. You have, with out a doubt, hit the best spot on the internet to get started flying model planes. Bruce is giving you perfect advice. With more information as to what plane you have you will get more detailed answers as it is very likely someone here has had or has one just like it. One truth here is if you can think of it... someone here has done it

Here are the specs,Hobbico superstar 48 ep (non aieleron). GP t-600-r motor,30 amp ecs w/th bec, wth/deans plugs3003 servos, battery 8.4 2800 mah nimh. Yes it is the gear reduction unit, the slowest prop possible
. I was reading and would a 400 motor be better for a beginner?
Thank's again.

I am not sure a 400 size motor would get a 3lb airplane off the ground. I have a couple of fomies with 400s in them and they are about 12oz planes.
The Superstar is already a trainer plane, why do you want to change what already works the way it should.
A better bet is to find an instructor at a local club to help you.

This plane is designed to fly slow. However, slow is relitive to experience and space that you fly in. I would not recomend taking this plane to the local park and try to fly it as you would run out of space in a hurry. Ensure you have a propper unobstructed feild to fly in and have an experienced flyer help you out with it. Don't change anything on it at first. You have a hobby quality trainer there that you can truely learn to fly with. Just take your time and get some face to face help. The only thing those of us that fly model planes love more than flying is helping someone else learn to fly.

Oh i'm not going to fly it without a proper instructor to set it up. I just want to get everything as close to flight as possible. I have raced Nitro trucks and I learned really fast how your space runs out doing 50+mph
Thanks,
Nelson.

I have flown this plane on geared 05 Astro & it is not really all that fast. flies solid very well on 3:1 ratio or something close to that .you want to have a higher pitch to make up for the slower rpm of the gear drive . DO NOT go with low pitch props, geared. . actually Its BETTER than straight stock motor due to the larger prop. try the aileron version. it is not that touchy & much more solid in wind.the plane can handle hevier ( more MaH )packs than stock.
