.28 in a funfactor? oh dear....

It sounds as if the shoes are to light for the springs or the springs are to heavy either way. You can try to ruff up the inside of the clutch bell to get the shoes to grip better. But the best thing to do is like you said get springs and shoes with a known weight.
While you are waiting for parts you can work on that center diff setup. Like I'm one to talk I still haven't figured out what I'm going to do with the CVD's. Getting close though trying to decide between T-maxx hubs or buggy hubs. I can do either one relatively easy.
I have come close to doing the same thing with my temp gun and I have stepped on it more than once. If your LHS doesn't have any you should be able to get one from Radio Shack (electronics hobby store).
Glad to here that there isn't anything broken yet. Really the only weak parts on the truck is the diff cups and CVDs and you fixed those.

I just did a bit of a search as to which clutch shoes and springs to get for my new .28. Almost unanimously, the Mugen alloy shoes and Mugen 1.1mm springs were considered the best. They arrived today and its almost a shame nobody will see them, they are a work of art, amazing finish quality.

sorry rolland, missed ur post...
yea i scuffed up the c/b while i was sorting the servo. it had a black lining in it from the shoes... suggests the springs are too heavy? either way i will get some alloy shoes, probably have some breakages then...
hmm that centre diff... i need to buy a few bits for it still - ofna tank, front diff casing, couple of diffs and gears, gear set for my spare hi torque servo etc. more cash to part with... i will do what i can with what parts i do have, im gonna have to back off on the spending for a bit, the mt isnt quite finished yet!
doh - of course!! radioshack is the equivalent of maplins here, just down the road... will look tomorrow.
yea nothing broken... yet... just wait til this motor hooks up... on another note tho, i ran it on rough gravel today for a bit, and those tyres are still gripping on that stuff, really good all round these brick pins. its turning in very well under quite hard braking too and starting to oversteer nicely on the way out - clutch slips too much to hold the slide tho... i set the suspension up with a little neg camber and a touch of toe in on the front, and as square as i could get it at the rear. no idea what weight shock oil or the weight of my springs are tho!! but it works well so far.

It sounds like the springs are not allowing the shoes to fully engage. Either the motor has to much torque for the shoes to hold or the springs are too heavy. Alloy shoes will fix the problem but clutch bell wear will increase. If you can, try to use a vented clutch bell to help disipate the heat.

its the only bell i have steel gears on, and they are fixed pinions... will have to drill some holes to ventilate it. good point that.
theres a little bit of wear on them now, nothing to worry about tho.

The shoes and springs I got from Nitro Models of Earby. The shoes were £15 and the springs were £2. The delivery was £3 and took two days from ordering til I got em this morning.
As for the engine, I got myself an RB TM728 for the Savage, leaving the S25 rattling around doing nowt.

Thats the fellas. Putting everything together today. Seems a shame to stick the old flywheel on there though. Might have to find a nice new shiny one and a better pipe/manifold set up to 'finish' the overhaul!

PJ, when you put your .28 together, which clutch nut did you use? Was it the one from the CEN? The only reason I ask is because I have been putting all the bits on the RB this afternoon and when it came to putting the clutch shoes on, the springs wouldn't seat in the groove properly! They are a very snug fit in the shoes and there is no play to push them down properly. Just wondering if I would have any more luck using a CEN clutch nut, or even if it would fit.

not certain, but pretty sure that any 1/8 clutch nut will do it... unless anyone knows otherwise...?
i used one designed for threaded crankshaft engines - [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXBZT0&P=7]see here[/link] - and cut the end off and drilled it thru, works fine - i think...
just checked the springs on the cen clutch, they are loads lighter that the ones in the .28, and i mean loads! how do urs compare?

Yeah, tons lighter. I have the standard ones from the S25 but if I fitted them, the engine would be idling with the ali shoes in constant contact with the clutch bell...not good. By the way cheers for the heads up on those clutch nuts, two of them on their way to me now.
Hopefully when they arrive I can finally get the engine running. It's a beaut incidentally, RB sure know how to put a motor together!!

were the standard springs for the s25 designed for teflon shoes? if so do u still need them?
im thinking i have springs for ali shoes fitted with my teflon shoes, my lhs guy is more of a plane bloke than cars/trucks...

The teflon shoes and springs are still fitted to the S25 they will be the basis of the big block CEN, sorry dude.
Quick question though. If I reverse the shoes so they are pointed anti-clockwise, will this adversely affect the performance of the clutch? Any ideas? The reason I ask is because they fit perfectly if I do this!!!

lol, no worries on the springs, was just joking mate.
if u fit the shoes backwards, i believe it will engage later and lighter, could well be wrong tho, but i remember reading something about that... will see if i can find it again for u.
so the 25 is going in the cen then? uh-oh! u do u realise what u are letting urself in for? it did my head in getting mine done, it had better work with this clutch... but when it starts breaking shafts and diffs, im gonna be real pissed off!
out of interest how well did the teflon shoes wear in that .25? or havent u run it?

Its about 2 gallons old and the shoes are doing fine, maybe could do with a bit of roughing up but no significant wear at all.
As for the CEN and S25, I think that'll be a slow burner!!

How nice are those shoes? Good luck with the clutch nut, if it doesn't fit I will let you know how the Hyper 7 ones go.
And if the Hyper 7 ones don't work, look what I found http://store.savagess.com/product_in...roducts_id=190

right, i got another 3 tanks thru it, and the clutch bell was smoking quite well after the 3rd. i had left it for a good 5 mins between tanks... but it seems even the alloy clutch is still slipping. the second tank it was gripping well from take off, but then it died off.
i am starting to question the gearing now as well as the clutch springs. i am running a 14t pinion on the genesis 43t spur what do u guys think? i know that the cen clutch on the os18 will hold with that spur and an 11t pinion, altho it does wear the clutch fairly quickly.
the other thing is that the bell isnt vented, and i cant drill it as the 18t 2nd gear ppinion is too large to allow me to get a drill bit in.
im guessing the 1.1 mugen springs i fitted are made from 1.1mm wire? cant i go down to 1.0mm, i am sure i have read about this somewhere.
gotta do something - only had a couple of small wheelies so far, the suspension is quite soft tho, and the engine may take a little more running in/leaning, but this is the main reason i am looking towards the gearing now as well.
any thoughts are welcome...

aha - yea the link works now mate, hmmm its a bit different from my nut too! but i cant see there being much in it, the radiused groove where the springs sit looks very similar in diameter to mine. but good to know there is the exact nut for this setup out there.
arg! still cant upload pics!! aha - i can if i edit my post!
left to right - teflon shoes.... erm dead? alloy shoes fitted, alloy shoes after 3 tanks (both tanks)
seeing that black on the shoes reminded me i didnt clean the bell out after toasting the teflon shoes... might have been an idea eh? bell is scuffed up and ready to try again. also the engine back plate had got loose, which answered some starting and running issues i had - cant believe the manufacturers dont use threadlock... shocking really...

Could it have been the black crud in the clutch bell that was smoking? Those old black clutch shoes are KNACKERED. Not sure two tanks should be able to do that to a set of shoes!
About the 1mm springs, yes Mugen make those and they should be available from the same place.
Been asking around and the Hyper 7 clutch nut will work (apparently). There have been several people telling me that they run exactly that set up.
