Name that Plane VI

OK----That was fine, but just a warm-up. Now let's see if we can separate the "men from the boys".
I don't know what this plane is---the mystery has gone unsolved for a long time
. I have had ZERO luck with the guys from SPA---several guesses I know are incorrect, and no winners[
]. Can anyone tell me what this plane is, and who the pilot might be.
All I know is this is a mid-60s vintage picture, and was taken at a Detroit Invitational.

King Altair and I are the same person. Unfortunately, I may no longer be able to log on to FORUM at work--it happened right in the middle of the previous post. I will try to attatch the picture mentioned above from here.

It's hard to tell--the planes DO LOOK similar, but I think the fin shape is somewhat different. What is that plane, and who is the pilot?
It has been somewhat vexing for me that you can read only PART of the AMA number.
I will tell you who I have always THOUGHT it was after I can hopefully get some input. The identity of this fella, (and his son), has been an ongoing mystery for a long time. Whoever it is, he must have been a prominent pilot in the early days of RC pattern,or he would not have been invited. I KNOW this meet was attended by, (and this will tell you who I KNOW it isn't):
Hal deBolt
Ed Kazmirski
Don Lowe
Howard Thombs
Jim Kirkland
Ed Keck
Keep jogging those memories. I'd really like a definitive answer.

Well, the same picture is at the SPA site, but a bit larger and with some weird effects on the faces:
http://www.seniorpattern.com/picture...images/du5.jpg
The jpg is named "du5" if that means anything.

No---it's not a Taurus for sure.
It's been a long time. I've even had one RCCD official who I know was there say he can't remember. Sorry the the picture doesn't reveal the face a little better. Well, this picture will remain on the thread for some future person to identify. Don Lowe might be able to identify the pilot since I know he was there. For the time being though---it will remain a mystery.
Keep trying

I think the plane is either a Beachcomber or a Candy. I've got a picture of this plane somewhere in my "archives" so.. when I get home this afternoon, I'll give it a look see. The "fastback" canopy is what is throwing people off. I'm almost positive that was a "Builder issue". I'll let you know what I find this afternoon.

Av,
Could not find the original picture, but I matched the fin up to only one design. That design is Clif Weirick's Candy, winner of the 1965 Nats. The fin design on that plane is unlike any other of that era. With a full 3 view we could be 100%, but since that is all we have, I have to go with the Candy. BTW.. plans are available thru RCM... and a glass fuselage was made by at least 2 manufacturers during that period. That "fastback" canopy on the picture must just be a bit of builder originality. Hope this helps.

I don't know what the plane is, but my guess is that the pilot is Bill Thomas, I think from Oklahoma. The color scheme is similar to what Bill always had on his models. If it is Bill, it's probably his original design.

The model looks like an Orion.
Ed Kazmirski was the designer and competitor that flew the Orion. He also designed the Taurus. I have no idea who the gent is in the picture.

Thanks for the info. I will see what I can find from AMA about these individual's AMA numbers, and see if the last two numbers might happen to be "85". I've had Kim Kirkland's Beachcomber guessed before, but this plane is not the Beachcomber since Kirkland had his Beachcomber at the meet----I have pictures of it I will include. It IS possible this might be a second plane of his with a different design---I don't know what Kirkland looked like---I only have a picture of the Beachcomber, with a sign with his name on it in the picture.
It's just a matter of time---ask those you know who might know Kirkland, (or be an expert in early pattern), to look at the picture, and give their opinion.

We apparently have a "winner". I received a PM from Jon Lowe saying his father Don Lowe, (who was there, and was the winner of that Detroit Invitational in 1966), had looked at the picture, and has now identified the "mystery pilot" as LOU PENROD. Mr Penrod, (who I am personally unfamiliar with), was flying a plane of his own design. Don was not familiar with the plane's name, although close examination reveals the name "Saphir", or something close to it, (it's hard to read).
My sincere thanks to Jon, and Don Lowe for solving the mystery. Perhaps there are those out there in "RCU land" who knew Mr Penrod, (who has since passed away), and enjoyed the chance to see him flying again. That's the great thing about photography---it freezes that moment in time forever for those family members and friends who had the chance to know and fly with Lou. I know the "child" in that photo would love to have this picture as a keepsake. If any friend or family member who knows Lou, and the child in the photo would like the picture, I'd be happy to share it with them.
Thanks for all the help of those who joined me in the search.
