Lol you guys are correct about Pete always a highlight for me at the nats. Here are some pics of his planes they are almost identical in every way. I think we hit our stride this week with 5 planes. 2 De Ja Vu´s, 1 Passport, 1 Envision, and a Smaragd.

Finally done with my De ja vu here are a few pics. I am gonna try and get a couple of flights on it today. Let me know if anyone has any questions about the build.

Stephen and I were able to get out and test fly late today. Both of us flew twice. Both are flying very well. I only need a few adjustments to mine. Mainly on throw setup, but I'm going to wait a bit before I change too much. I haven't flown a pattern plane in several years, so it was a little different. In saying that I'm also smart enough to know the plane is flying very well. I can't wait to get some more time on it and really get back in the groove.

Both planes are setup identical other then Stephen's has a Neu motor and mine has a Hacker Q80 in it.

Stephen,
What happened to your spinner man?

I also got to fly mine today for the first time. It is set up the exact same as Todd's except he likes hotter ailerons and less elevator and I like slower ailerons and more elevator. We put in 3 flights in a good 20 mph wind so a calm day will tell a lot more. The plane tracks extremely well. I need to get use to flipping more switches more often for the split rudder. I'm looking forward to this season with both my planes.

Scott,

I'm originally from Bryan.....where do you fly there now ? Back in the old days we flew at the old
Bryan Air Force base but I'm sure A&M put a stop to that.

Hey Tommy. Pat Cole and I started the Riverside Fliers. I so miss flying out at the Annex. They don't allow anyone out there anymore. I just recently moved back here and that was a bummer. I actually make the drive to Waco to fly at TMAF with Todd Blose and Max and others. We do have a very nice field here out in Wixon Valley (about 7 miles East on 21 of Hwy 6). The problem with that is the owner's house is right behind the tree line so Ican't fly out at 150 meters as I'd fly over his house and he likes guns. I have been invited to fly out at Texas World Speedway as often as I'd like. I can use the infield no problem as it's a 2 mile oval. I've done it once with the Passport and will have to if I plan on practicing more than 2 days per week...which I do. I do so miss the Annex though. Even the aviation students doing the "final project" at A&M are bringing their flying designs out to the Wixon Valley field as they aren't even allowed to fly there anymore. I wish something could be done.

Hey All
Finished my De-Ja-Vu around 1:30 Saturday afternoon and took off to test fly!
First some Data, aircraft final weight with F3a Unlimited flight pack ready to fly was 10 Lbs. 12.5 Oz. three ounces better than the Visa I had. Several reasons for this as I decided to go to Monokote bottom of wings and all hardware was carbon fiber, aluminum, or titanium and the product from CA was lighter than the Visa. I used the old flow thru hyde mount with carbon fiber end grain balsa for the firewall and tail mount. Motor is a Neu FAI and speed control is Castle Ice HV 80. Regulator is Smart Fly Sport series with switch. Servos are 9151 on Rudder & Ailerons and 9650's on elevator. Receiver is Futaba 2.4 8 channel with a TP Pro-Lite 730 Lipo for power. Prop is a Falcon carbon fiber 20.5x14.5 that weighs 62 grams with a Flow thru carbon fiber nose cone on a fan blade TruTurn backplate.
The De-Ja-Vu fuse is huge and I also ordered the Balsa inlayed Canopy to prevent paint cracking and made the unit much more durable for very little weight gain! I pulled every trick in the book to get the weight down including using Kevlar thread for the Pull-Pull on the one piece rudder. This saved a lot of weight over the 2 servo 2 piece rudder and really reduces pilot load on flipping switches!
I made two flights Saturday and two flights Sunday and feel much more comfortable with the De-Ja-Vu than I did after 50 flights with the Visa! It's hard to believe the flight difference between two aircraft that only have a different fuse with different wing and stab locations. The wings and stabs are the same as the Visa. I have a ways to go before I get all the triming zeroed in but I am getting close fast! My C/G is is between 71/4 and 71/2 inches back of the wing leading edge at the wing root. I am still playing with this as I have not had a no wind day to really check the knife edge mix but currently I have no mix programed other than some down elevator for the no power down lines so I have got to be pretty close on the C/G. I also have a very small amount throttle rudder mix for full power verticals but less than half of what I had on the Visa.
The very first thing I learned in flight was that the aircraft is a lot more "draggie" and requires more throttle for all the horzonital maneuvers to get the speed where it needed to be. The good news is this aircraft is much easier to get a constant speed in the up & down lines than the Visa. I don't know if just me or the aircraft but it seems to do everthing at a slower speed. I always felt I was rushing thru the maneuvers with the Visa. In retro spec I think I needed to make the maneuvers larger with the Visa. After not flying for two months I am really rusty so I have a ways to go not only with the aircraft but with myself as well. I am enclosing some pic's and as you will see this is a very different look as far as the paint job but I needed help in seeing the aircraft in the air and to that end this scheme is very easy to see! Hope you like it as it's pretty "LOUD!"
Dick

Hey guys I am glad everyone seems to be liking there De Ja Vu´s I know Pete is chomping at the bit to get his going and Ricks back up is about a week from being finished. I have read all the comments and the only thing that confuses me a little are some of the ones about the split rudder. I think Scott mentioned more switch flipping and Dick has commented on the weight savings. I think it is time to address both of these just a little.

1. More switch flipping. This I really do not understand but please correct me if I am wrong. To do a stall turn don´t most of us go to a high rate Rudder. Thats one switch to flip equal to if you have a split rudder. Also if I am not mistaken to do a snap roll don´t most of us flip to a snap condition. That too is equal with the split rudder. So as far as I can see its exactley the same.

2. The weight issue. I have weighed both the split rudder (Approx 65 grams for both, the Single Approx 75grams) so the split is actually 10 grams lighter because it is built up verses the foam. Now for the servos, the two 9650´s weigh approx 28 grams each for a total of 56 grams. The lightest rudder servo I know of is the 9151 at approx the same weight most other are 15 to 20 grams heavier.
So at this point we have equal servo weight and a lighter rudder. The only difference is the extensions. Also without needing a rudder servo mount in the fuse you can easily remove another 10 grams of servo tray weight. So all in all its equal.

Now the advantages. With a single rudder on a plane with SFG´s you will need to run a very high amount of expo and a very low amount of travel for normal flight. Probably somewhere around 65% expo and 30% travel. At those setting your servo, as good as they are today will have horrible resolution. With the split rudder, the one that moves will have about 45% expo and be around 75% on the AFR. This is where the servos were disigned to work at there optimum according to people I have spoken to like Steve Helms.

That in itself is the only reason we use the split rudder. Its not a gimic, its to optimize our $2000 radios and $100+ servos.

Hope this clears things up a little.

Chip

Hi Chip,
I guess that's just a "me" thing having to flip more switches. I "fly" through all of my maneuvers so the only switch I was flipping before was for my snaps and spins to activate high rate aileron and elevator. My rudder was / is always at its max throw (as needed for that airplane and not the total amount of travel allowed) and I just adjusted with Expo. I don't use a snap button or condition (I only have the 10 CAP and it doesn't have conditions (read price $499)). Maybe most folks have the 12 or 14 channel radio and can use these. So...I only flipped a switch for 3 maneuvers in my sequence and flew through everything else.

With the Split Rudder (and at least with the 10 channel) I have to remember to make sure "full rudder" is on for takeoff/landing, stall turns, snaps, spins and split rudder is on for the rest of the time (point rolls horizontally/vertically, 45's).

I'm sorry if I confused people but for me, it's a ton more but BUT, well worth it when you see how this aircraft presents. It's just a new thing to learn, not a deterrent from this plane.

Maybe you should come back to Texas for a spell and we'll go out to the field. I have no doubt you can teach me a better way to do the same thing with the radio I have. It's the only way I could figure out to make this work. I've just always flown through things and tried not to be dependent on the radio but I'm willing to learn

Points taken. PLEASE PLEASE if you can teach me how to do a rolling figure M or simple stall turn for that matter on a flying rate rudder with any plane I will be at your place tommorow. I have been flipping to a high rate rudder for any stall turns for 35 years so to me it was just the same. I am not sure but I think the 10 CAP has flight conditions. If it does its a very nice option to use instead of dual rates. This way you can simply flip one switch (Snap Condition) and in that condition have the rudders through together. If not then I agree 100% dual rates are not the way to go. Please if I have confused anybody about this I am sorry. It is nesasary to use a flight condition not dual rates. I was not trying to discredit anyone, just trying to explain the pros and cons

Somehow, I doubt I can teach you anything about flying. I just did what works for me (with Todd's help mind you). Todd explained a little bit in his build thread. When I get time tonight, I'll go in to detail about how it is set up with the 10CAP. I don't think it has conditions but I've been wrong lots of times too. For the 10CAP, it's all set up with 3 Programmable Mixes just for the split rudder and 1 switch to turn on and off those mixes. Maybe you can look at how we did this and we can figure out a better solution. I'm sure most do flip to a high rate rudder....I've just always learned the hard way and flown what I was handed and told "don't crash it". Yes, that applies to Thorpe UAV's as well. HA!

Chip,

Unfortunately the 10C series does not have flight conditions. I tried everything on mine to trick mine and I finally emailed Krysta at Futaba to ask her and she said it doesn't have it. I think you can put multiple dual rates on one switch though, which is fairly close. Sounds like Scott flies the same setup I do as flying with high rate rudder for normal flying.

Hey All
Finished my De-Ja-Vu around 1:30 Saturday afternoon and took off to test fly!

I am enclosing some pic's and as you will see this is a very different look as far as the paint job but I needed help in seeing the aircraft in the air and to that end this scheme is very easy to see! Hope you like it as it's pretty "LOUD!"

Dick

Dick,

Looks great! A question: is that the arming pin/ribbon on the left side of the fuse? What product is that? How's it working out?

Thanks.

Hey Mike
Yes, it is the switch option that can be ordered with the SmartFly Sport regulator and it is exactly what the doctor ordered. When the pin is pulled it actuall disconnects the switch from the regulator turning it on and providing power to the receiver making it impossible to have a switch failure in flight. The other nice thing is that you can tell from across the room weather the switch is on or off. I have used every system ever made and I like it the best and is not exspensive. Chip is the one that put me on to the SmartFly system. They have a website so just do a quick google search for info.

Scott,

You are the man. I remember setting up my first split rudder with Todd back in 07 and I did it the same way. Since then we have figured out better ways to do it if possible. I have set up many with the 12FG, 12Z, and of course the 14´s. The best way to do it I have found is the following.

Select your model type. 2 ail, 2 elev, 1 rud. and throttle. Then go to the first aux channel and select or name it rudder 2.

After that you will need to assign it to a stick and a trimmer. I use the standard rudder stick and trim for this.

At this point you now have 2 ail, 2 elev, 1 throttle and 2 rudders (Channel 3 and 7) Program everything as normal including the expos but set the rudders in AFR so that the rudder that travels moves 75% with an expo of 40%. The other rudder we move a minimum amount in the same direction (15-20% with 30% expo) What this means is the left rudder will move 75% with 40% expo while the right one will only move about 15% with 30% expo in the same direction. Don´t ask me why we even move the second rudder I cannot remember but it works.

Once you have this flight mode set up copy it to another labeled snaps. At this point equalize the rudders so they both have the same travel and expos. I have found that 65% with 45% expos works really good as a starting point. Of course you will need to increase your ail in this mode as well.

After this is done copy the normal condition once again and label it high rate rudder (or stall turns) This condition will simply be to get maximun rudder through. I use 100% travel with about 65% expo and it is only for the stall turn manuvers. In this condition both rudders need to move the same amount.

In the end you will have 3 conditions to do what 3 dual rates do with a fixed rudder.

Hope this helps

C

Chip,
Thanks my friend. I'd like to say all kudos go to Todd Blose for programming the radio this way. He deserves full credit for making a 10 channel radio work where one may think you need a $1000+ radio. I just took the time to understand what he did and then take that information and set it up for my flying style with travel, expo and such. Holler if you ever come back to Texas, I'd love to shake your hand again.

Hi Chip,

Besides the better rudder servo resolution you described in post #160 with model with SFG what other benefits do you see using a split rudder arrangement. I would be interested to hear how you use it and where during a flight.

Regards,

Peter

Peter,

Better servo resolution is what its all about however there are some other advantages. The rudder works much smoother IMO. Instead of the airplanes darting in the way of the rudder correction its more of a smooth yaw. Also on knife edge the tail does not seem to drop like it does with a conventional rudder. These are just my opinouns maybe some other guys will chime in that have just made the switch.

I agree with the observations made by Chip. I was skeptical of the benefits, but I was very pleased with the flight characteristics and happy that I went with the split rudder.

So where are the details on this plane. Do you have to buy from Argentina? I am not clear if this is a ARF , ARC , or kit
