Hello Mitchmcfm
What size stand off's do you have with your DL50 in your Dietrich Extra?? Do you set the needles with the cowel on or off. Could you post a few pictures of your engine set up??
Thanks

I used the stock ones that came with the DL you can get them at [link=http://www.dlusa.net/index.htm]DL USA[/link] . I set mine with the cowl off for better acsess runs the same with cowl on or off plus did not want more holes in the cowl . I am useing a Xoar Sword 22x8 at 7100 rpm has all the power you need on the plane mine came out at 16.4 lb .

Thanks a bunch, looks great. So your carb doesn't go into the fire box, I thought the stock stand off's were too short. I'll be getting ahole of DLusa for a set of stand off's. Thanks for the help.

Finally got my Ultra RC Yak 54 DL50out and in the air this week and what a blast had the engine a little rich the first couple flights. I leaned her out and she doesn't miss a beat.
I changed exhausts from the stock exhaust to an old KS can that I purchased about 10-12 years ago, it is super quiet but it robs a lot of rpm's. With the can I get 6860 rpm's
and the stock exhaust I was getting 7800-7900 on a 22x8 menz. I don't need any more power as I have unlimited vertical and great throttle response, this engine really kicks butt.

Bob, I know that you havethis same plane, so are you running a can? If yes how did you tighten it in the tunnel?

Thanks
Jeff

What's with Bob @ dlusa? Not answering support calls, My head gasket on the DL50 is blown after only 10, 12 min' flights, a couple of flyers in my club have had big problems with this engine and no support from BOB!!!
YET EVERYONE IS BRAGGING ABOUT BOB and his support, wher is it? not from here, he does not answer calls for support, I have had my muffler fixed twice already at t5he tune of$20.00 already, the pipe out of it keeps on falling off, but no answer from bob!!!!
maybe it's time to look for another distributor, is there any other besides the on in australia?

Ok.. I have a tank and a 1/2 of 40-1 thru my engine as of now... Wow!!!!

I leaned the Hi and Low to clean up the transition and then just left them.. The last full power blast yielded a 7200 rpm with a 22-8 Xoar prop! Idle solid at 1800...

My first Thrust measurement test yielded 25 pounds on my Walmart electronic fish scale.. (So take that for whats it worth..) :-)

I have a few little issues to address but I think the rest of the breakin will be done in the air! I can't wait till next weekend!!

Oh and on a side note....

You know that nasty sticky black stuff that comes out during breakin with Dino oil... You know the stuff that is like Tar and just as hard to come off....

Well the wife was watching me struggle with removing it with Window Cleaner... She went to her makeup chest brought out a bottle of Mabilene expert eyes moisurerizing Water Proof eye makeup remover.... A little squirt on a paper towel and it litterally wipes the stuff off like it was dust...! Great stuff! And you can pick it up at the drug store for about a buck 99 for 2.3oz's which should pretty much last you for a long time....

I have never had a problem with bob answering my calls or emails for that matter, so i do not know whats up. Any one else know of any problems with the DL's? If there have been alot of issues they have not been posted here. I know of one guy that had to have his repaired and Bob did it under warranty and got it back in a week.

Tom at ValleyView RC handles them as well.

Another products that works well for cleaning up the nasty black stuff is Simple Green. Wipes off like it was nothing and doesn't harm the covering. It can be diluted also. Just in case anyone wants to stay out of the makeup isle. Just kidding and excellent tip Hibrass.

Sorry, Jeff. I'm not running a canister. The canister tunnel is carrying my smoke tank.

I'll second the Simple Green! You can dilute to 50/50 and works great.

Head gasket for a DL50? The cylinder and the combustion chamber are cast as one unit, there is no head gasket. Maybe the part digtman is looking for is the base gasket between the cylinder and the crankcase. There is an exploded view of the engine on the dlaustralia.com parts page. Perhaps someone could put the picture up to help identify the parts needed. I always get an error when trying to post pics.

Ed,
It was funny when I did the first ground running of my motor. When I was done I brought it down in the basement to clean it up. I figured well I'll give the windex a try and all it did was smeared and I even tried rubbing alcohol and it helped but still smeared. I had simple green just sitting here from my nitro buggy days. I tried it on a little spot and I didn't even have to add pressure, just wiped the rag across. The stuff works awesome on nitro buggies and would be even better for the nitro plane guys.

Spadkun is right, there is no head gasket just the base gasket. I don't understand why he would have trouble getting ahold of Bob. I have never tried calling the guy but have emailed him on several occasions and he usually gets back to me the same day or the second. He is a busy man and he may have a regular full time job as well but I don't know if he does or not.

Hey NEDYOB,
I would contact Bob at DL for the stock standoffs. He prolly has sets of stock ones laying around. Maybe he could cut ya a deal. As for the muffler I think I would go with a jtec or bisson new. I think a used one is going to be hard to come by. What's wrong with your stocker? Is noise an issue for you?

Hello Aerbatx from Kalona Ia. Do you fly in Iowa City or in Cedar Rapids area mostly? My wife was born and raised in Iowa City and Im down there quit often. Maybe I might see you around down there.

NEDYOB
....yup, I've been flying with the Iowa City Aerohawks for almost 20 years. Just ask for Chad if you stop out there sometime. Also if you need any help with your DL, let me know!

So I've been very pleased with the way my DL 50 has been running. Broke it in on the Lawnboy (two gallons), then went to Amsoil 50:1. Broke it in on a Zinger Pro wood 20 x 8, then switched to a Mejzlik 20 x 8 somewhere down the line. Then, damaged the tips on the Mej, switched to a Xoar 20 x 8. Taking RPM readings I was a little disappointed that I was turning only about 6600rpm when many others are bragging of 7000 - 72000 on similar prop. Okay, then I learn you gotta run that Amsoil at at least 80:1. So, I switched to 80:1. Engine ran great, maybe a little cooler, but didn't seem to pick up much RPM. Then switched to a new plug (CM - 6 or whatever), no improvement (but the original plug was carboned up pretty bad - probably the rich fuel/oil ratio). Then a friend loaned me another Mejzlik 20 x 8 and I picked up about 400rpm! Next flight I lean the low needle a bit and the engine's running even stronger, but still a little rich, so I lean the top end a tad the next flight. Look out!!! This thing is running stronger than ever! Maybe the combination of all those factors, along with more time on the engine (10 - 15 gallons now?) added up to the RPM increase. The engine runs so strong now that I'm starting to think a little more about what I'm doing so as to not overstress the airframe. Doesn't matter though because the moment my engine started really comin' on I destroy the plane when I momentarily loose concentration and clip a tree with one of the wings (hey, I was doing an outside knife edge circle!). Of course, buddy's prop destroyed too.

Oh well, engine seems fine (spark plug cap split apart and won't stay together so I need a new ignition - on the way from ValleyView) and already have another Extra in progress.

Can't wait to get that engine and plane back into the air. It was running really strong!

Moral of the story; 80:1, Mejzlik prop.
