Thanks for the info Richard. I am aware that a 5 cell would cook the ignition. Thanks. I just wasn't sure of what capacity I needed.

Thanks again

Most of the new RCEXL Ignitions are OK with 5 cells. All of the newer C&H Ignitions are OK u p to 6.6 volts.
I can build them for anything up to 12 volts If I am ever able to do this again on a small scale.

Guys, What is best to use to extend the stock muffler pipe? I am putting a dle30 in a RC Guys decathlon and need about three more inches to clear the cowl. I saw one on another thread with a silicone extension but haven't been able to find one that big anywhere.

Thanks, Yours is the one I saw on the other thread I think. One other question. The user manual that came with my dle30 is pretty lame and includes nothing about setting the ignition up or breakin. Someone who has no expierience with a gas engine would be kind of lost. Anyone else feel this way?

Checkout the manual from tower. It's a bit more detailed.

The 3/4 to 1 inch silicone is hard to find.... I need some also...

As for the 3 inch extension... I am using aluminum tubing cut from a lawn chair... works great on 1 1/2 inch extension... pick up old lawn chairs on the streets near your home... they are always being thrown away or at yard sales...

My question on the 3 inch extension is.... will that cause too much back pressure and some way affect the engine...

Thanks....

Somebody from Tower should actually RUN a DLE 30 timed at 46....Correct timing is 28 -30 BTDC....

That's only one of several errors in their manual that could cause grief for the inexperienced.

When? Usually just once when it's taken out of the box for the first time, but any time an ignition module, hall sensor, propeller hub, crankcase, or crankshaft is replaced it's a good idea also.

Everyspark ignitionengine user should know how tocheck and set the timing on their engine, it's part of engine tuning and troubleshooting.

Thanks Jody.... from what I am hearing and seeing on this timing is that some or all gas engines will need to be set up with the timing before running..

I have not checked my DLE 30 but it seems to run and perform well... should I stop running and check everything per the video?

Not necessarily but if you want to just for peace of mind it can't hurt and you can gain valuable experience in doing just that. If it runs good then it most likely isn't a problem though.

Myself personally though, it's the first thing I do on any engine I plan on putting on one of my own planes, before I run it for the first time. There is no sense running it and adjusting the carburetor if the timing is all out of whack.

Now I don't want people to misconstrue that to mean all DLE engines, or any other for that matter, come with the timing way out  of spec. It's just the way I do things and when done correctly never does any harm, it can only help insure success.

Been a while since I posted, read his thread about a year ago before purchasing my DLE-30. I have a question, I have the older version with the side mount carb mounted about 9deg angled down in a 18lb Super Decathlon and it flies great with planty of power. Last year during the summer and fall months it would start up pretty easy and was very reliable. However, I have flown it on two occasions this year and it is hard to start and I have found that it takes a long time to get running without it being choked. If I open up the choke slightly, it will speed up for a short while then slow down and die. I thought maybe the low end is too lean so I opened it up about 1/16 - 1/8 of a turn and found it would run longer and was able to fly with it. The next time out it seemed like the low end was doing the same but I didn't want to open it up much more so I closed it the same amount and it again seemed to work OK and flew it without any problems. The question is, why is this motor starting to get finicky after less than a year of flying. Does the fuel tubing go bad after a year? Do people rebuild their carbs every season? Is the weather affecting it this much? Hope somebody has some insight for me.

Been flying Rc for about 25 years, this is my first gas engine.

Thanks....

You should replace all the tubing every year

Jody!
I have a DLE 30 that has five gals of gas run thru it.
It starts easy and runs good.
The problem is I am still getting a lot of black exhaust showing up on the plane.
The oil mix is 40  to 1
I have not taken the engine apart at this point.
What do you think the reason for the excess black in the exhaust is.
Any thoughts will be welcome
Thanks

Combustion creates carbon, carbon is black, I'd be a little more concerned about no color in the exhaust residue. Pretty much any oil residue should be dark, that means the oil is doing it's job by carrying carbon away and not letting it build up inside the engine. If you want the oil residue to be cleaner use more oil. What oil are you using?

I run Stihl @ 32:1, the residue on the bottom of my planes is a dark brownish green. Cleans off very easy with a little windex and a couple paper towels. There is no such thing as a clean burning fossil fuel.

The Stihl oil you use, can you tell me what it is EXACTLY as I am having trouble finding it locally.

Thanks!
