Went to range check everything today..put in my PPM RX and got to 90 feet before I started to get a few glitches..put my PCM RX in and stopped walking at 400' with no glitches at all..is that an acceptable result? With my PPM in and the engine off I only get about 120 feet so Im not too far off..

Depends on the radio...

Futaba states 100 feet with the antenna down on the 9C... some radios state with one (thickest) section pulled up. Consult your manual to be sure...

120 feet sounds more than adequate with the engine off... And I think they say that you can accpet 10 pecent less with engine on (or 90 feet)

Can't really go by the PCM as it would mask any issues, but I do believe that your range test is a pass.

Well I think I found another problem that is contributing to my range test..If I stand over the plane with the engine OFF and lightly tap the tip of the antenna..all the controls go crazy! I guess its time to send in my TX[]

If you havn't had it checked out lately it doesn't hurt to send it in but standing over the plane while tapping the antenna isn't proof of anything wrong and probably is a result of your body acting as an antenna itself.

90 feet with a ppm is about right. As for the pcm test....you want to walk away from the plane until you loose the signal and then walk back towards the plane. Once you reaquire control is where your range check is measured from.

Other factors such as the direction of the plane, whether it's on the ground or on a table, other radios in the area....will all effect your results.

I didn't want to discourage the man from sending his reciever in, but to be honest I have done a lot of flying with only 70 feet distance. I have never had a glitch. I like to set my throttle to idel in fail safe, that way I can tell if I get a glitch on PCM

Send it in and have it checked. Your assumption that something was wrong was flawed because the servos glitched when you stood over the plane and "tapped" the antenna. Read bassinbum's response to you again. I think you should send it in simply because you will never feel comfortable with this radio until you have it checked out. And, should anything happen when you're using the radio in the future, you'll always blame yourself for not having it checked out. Personally, I think every radio should be sent in for a check up and re-alighment at least every other year, and.......... every time if the plane has been crashed. you can't buy cheaper insurance.

Bob,
I don't know how hard you tend to crash but to effect your TX it must be pretty damn hard.

Well I really am at a loss now..I got a friends TX and tried and got the same effect....Now I can get only 20 feet with the engine OFF before I get glitches..***?? This is what Ive done:

I tried 3 different rx's..1 was brand new
tried different crystals
swapped batteries and regulators
unpluged everything and tried each servo on its own
swapped and eliminated extensions
removed the rx from the plane and placed outside of the fuse

What now??[:@]

you say you can get 90 feet from the plane before it glitches, Is that with your antenna all the way down or one length sticking up?

I really think your fine. The fact that it glitches when you stand over the plane and touch the antenna is of no concern to me. (maybe you) If your going to be laying on the back of the plane and holding the antenna while flying, then I'd say you have trouble. If you like me and you stay on the ground, I think you'll be fine. Set the failsafe on your throttle to idle and listen for the engine to change throttle position while flying. I'm not sure if your servo leads and extensions are the twisted type, if they are not twisted, put a twist in everything. One twist per 2 inches in plenty, don't go to crazy

I think you pretty much confirmed that your reciever is fine when you swaped it out with other ones.

Just for the heck of it, see what it does with one segment up. (the fat one)

wow.... this thread is still live .... why people have to own Extreme Flight not knowing when it will be here while about half dozen companies came out with 50cc yak.... I have EF yak and love it but I see no major difference between the other Yaks......granted..Chris's Yak has the best color scheme but if I crash mine.... not gonna wait and whine about it......

I did do that and the glitches stopped..in fact I just pulled up the first thin section and it stopped..When I put my PCM in I walked to almost 320 feet with zero glitches and that was with the engine running..

Bassinbum I have been a ham for a long time now and I've built a lot of the equipment that I've used over the years. Not so much now, but 30-40 yr's ago. Iimagine there are many reading this thread that have done the same. I think you'll find that anyone that understand the close relationship between "RF" and "IF" part of our equipment, will understand why it's always best to send the transmitter and reciever together when it's sent back to the mfg. for repair or "CHECK UP". I won't take the time to explain this on this thread because that was not the purpose of this thread. Suffice it to say that over time.......electrical components change tollerances, or even fail without showing up until something else in the chain also fails and then..........catastropic failure. (Crash) Also their is a couple other things called DRIFT, and ALIGNMENT. That's why I said in my other post,MY personal opinion is it's best to send both your Transmitter and Reciever together (as a unit) for checkup or repair. But........ It's your radio, and it's your call.

I'm done flying for the winter, I pickled my engine yesterday. I'll wait until feb-march for another EF Yak, if Chris can't produce one. I'll be forced to go elsewhere as well. The loyalty chris has is interesting to say the least. Usually there is a good reason for loyalty

The loyalty is simply because the product is as good as and better than most produced by other Mfgs. Question is........How long are you willing to wait?
