There was plenty of smoke, my garage was foggy, and its a very large 4 car. Still smells from the exhaust today. I will play with the LSN until I can get it to run smoothly at 4K.

NOT SMOOTHLY! You want it to run really rich and rough during the 10 minute 4k period with GLOW ON THE WHOLE TIME. Same with the 10 minute 5k run, rich and rough except with glow power off. These two ten minute periods of break in are the most important.

If the engine won't run at 4000 with glow power on at the current needle settings you'll have to open the throttle more, to say 5k, and then bring it down to 4k by richening the lsn.

Better to see potential problems occuring sooner than later I say. No need to encourage wear either.

Since I'm not a idiot, I do know that since starting to use the OS gauge about 5 years ago no lash has ever increased enough to get the stock Saito gauge to slide in after the 50 minute break in period. If it were possible to find out I'd bet most Saito's have been run 100's of hours using the Saito provided gauge or no gauge at all.

Well with that thinking I should start smoking again. Why not? My Grandfather lived to age 94 and smoked like a freight train!

It already has ~30 minutes on it and 5 ounces of fuel through it. My garage stinks from castor now from that run last night. Even after that, with glow on, it wont go under 4800 RPM without quitting, so now I want to start smoothing it out and get a more reliable steady RPM. I also have to clean the back of my truck, the residue blew back onto the tailgate. yuck. I want to get it to run steady at 4K, then run it up in steps and use at least two tanks. I have a 22 ounce tank on the stand. Once I do that I can get the carb fine tuned, and work on the idle RPM, but for now just getting it steady at 4K without glow will make me happy.

Sorry, I didn't realize you had run it for 30 minutes already.
Yep, it's time to lean that bad boy some. After more run time slightly rich your cylinders will begin equalizing in compression and temp. You gotta know we're all green with envy and wish our garages were filled with that radial smoke.

Hey man, you're supposed to burn the castor, not drink it!

Sounds like you may want to relocate your test stand to somewhere outdoors in the opening for your own comfort.

The smell of castor loosening things up? Is that really a thing?

It is for me! Anytime I run castor based fuel in my planes I have rumbly in the tummy the next day. Probably the fine droplets sprayed up on my face because I can taste it. It's why I don't like castor based fuels and prefer Wildcat. Looks like 2/4 is no longer available now. That sucks

I just sold a120 R-3 in May with a Keleo ring, I shipped it in two boxes, it wouldn't fit in it's original box with the Keleo on it.

I say turn that engine 180 degrees so the head on the bottom is pointing up and start it, see then how it runs

Sweet deal, back then didn't have the money or had I known would have been all over it.

Anyway, turns out the LSN was too lean. Made a 3/16 turn CCW and it ran smoothly, and now idles well. I ran the 4K@ 10, 5K @ 10 and so on and have another 50 minutes and 22 ounces of fuel through it. With the glow on I see 1500 or so idle, without it was idling around 1650 with a cool little burble, and if I slowly advance throttle it will rev up OK, but will stall if I advance too fast. With glow on though I can rev it quickly from idle and it revs up and down nicely. Nice running engine now. It may take a bit to start on a flip though as it is still very rich.

idle no glow

peaked, but not fully peaked

Smokey

That is oil not water

I believe this was the 6K run, between 5 and 6K about 19 minutes of running, check the fuel level, it was topped off when I started and it ran about a minute or so before I started timing it with about 2 minutes between the first 10 minute timer and starting it for the second 10 minute run.

This is after peaking the HSN, haven't touched the LSN nor will I until I have a few gallons in if it even needs it. It was also without the glow on.

Oh, during the 4K run I switched the glow off after a minute and it ran like that about 3 minutes then RPM dropped. Switched glow back on and it came back up, so assume it was #3 dropping off. During the 5 K I tried again, still dropped off. After that I ran it with the glow off with no drops. Only time I needed glow on was at low idle, and it made no real change in RPM on or off, so I may have the LSN nailed just right.
