RE: Extra 2X2
Hi all,
Just got my Extra 2x2 today and all the parts weigh in at 7lb 2oz. I noticed that the wing tub is aluminum and it weighs in at 7.2 oz. Does anyone know of a good place here in the US to get a carbon fiber tube for this plane?
Thanks,
Pedro

RE: Extra 2X2
I Have placed an order for a 2x2 with the new colour scheme. I don't know how quickly this will reach Auzzie though? This is my first gas plane so I'm looking forward to a lower fuel bill and some serious power...

RE: Extra 2X2
Hi Guys,
We had our first really good spring day this weekend in the UK and I had a ball with my 2x2 - previously I'd only been able to test fly it and little else.
We went for an electric setup and power is via the new Model Motors AXI 5330/18 turning a 20x11 APC-E prop with a 10S3P TP 6000 lipo pack. AUW is 6.2 Kg. The manual suggested about 3 degrees of right thrust for a Plettenburg outrunner (which was our starting point) although I found that a little more was required even though the 20x11 is probably a slightly under-propped configuration for this motor. Model Motors actually recommend 20x13 for F3A type applications but for first flights we started out with the 20x11.
So far I've not been disapointed. It will prop hang at just under half-throttle. The model has a really "locked-in" feel in flight. Knife-edge flight is very good with no noticeable elevator coupling (motor has 1 degree up-thrust) and you don't have to put in much rudder before it will start to climb. It is absolutely brilliant and makes an average stick-twiddler like me look like I know what I'm doing. Snaps rolls are just awesome
So far I've only been putting the model up for about 7 minutes at a time and it looks like it's only been consuming around 3000mAh per flight. I recon a good 12 minutes of fairly spirited flying is not unreasonable to expect. I'll start to push it a little more over the coming weeks.
I love the way this thing flies - simply brilliant.

Phil,
Good news! Now all we need are a few more days like Saturday!!
How many packs do you have and what charger do you use?

At present I only have the one pack. I'll be getting a couple more as I'm planning on using a similar setup on some other models at some point. However, a new BVM Bobcat composite means we'll not be shelling out on any more batteries for a while.
I'm using a Schulze ISL 6-330d. Since it only cranks out 5 amps it takes a little longer to charge but it does the job. I'm not about to buy a new charger for the sake of 1 amp. For the money this little charger is hard to beat. For charging in the field I've had to gang two heavy duty car batteries in parellel together - it works although after the first charge they start to buckle under until you drop the current down to around 3 amps. I've got to have a look at some bigger car batteries.

Phil, what is your WOT amps. Thanks, Norm
Phil, what is your WOT amps. Thanks, Norm
I'm not completely sure at the moment. I'm guessing that since I've been putting around 3 amps back into my packs after a 7 minute flight that we're averaging around 25-30 amps throughout the entire flight. The 20x11 is under-propped and Model Motors seem to rate the AXI5330/18 at upto 65 amps with the 20x13. I've got an amp meter so I'll stick that on and do some tests with WOT static, hopefully this weekend.

Hi all 2x2 owners,
Is a 3" Tru Turn spinner large enough? If not what spinners are you using (can you recommend anything from Tower)?
Thanks

RE: Extra 2X2
Hi All
My 2x2 has flown. I built it with an OS140RX to keep it light so I could use it as a backup Pattern and backup IMAC model.
I put ALL the servos up front and used a bell crank pull pull for the elevator. The model weighs 5.4kg with a lipol and 300g of nose weight.
I took out the lipol and nose weight and replaced it with a 340g 6V 2400mah nicad.
How does it fly?...............beautifully!!!
It will fly F3A and IMAC. After flying it around to see how it rolls, loops, snaps and knife edge looped, I pulled vertical did a 2 of 4 and positive snap in opposite ..............easy!
It balanced well behind the recommended cg range. It will fly inverted hands off. I would prefer it to be a little nose heavier, but at this light wing loading it doesn't have a nasty bone, so I'll leave it.
Cheers

Thanks Gr Gaaaz,
Some useful information on that site. Furthermore, our club now has at least 2 flying 2x2's which is also veryt helpful for hints.
Cheers

RE: Extra 2X2
Here's what's left of my brothers 2x2 after a mid-air with a U-Can-Do 60. Both lost their planes. It was 13.5 lbs with a 50 and Pitts muffler. I'll let my brother post the rest about the plane (if he feels like it). His new one is on the way...

RE: Extra 2X2
Well, for the 3-3/4 flights I had on it, the plane was incredible. It was setup with the maximum throws we could get out of the surfaces and the roll rate put a shock flyer on high rate to shame!
I was finishing a knife edge loop when the UCan Do 3D came and cut through the rear of the fuse, of course, only the 2 of us in the air, and only 3 of us at the field that evening, all trying to get some flying in before dark.
The plane had 8611A's on all surfaces and Duralite 2800mah pack on the receiver, it all worked well. The DA50 was going great on a 23x8 Mejlik prop and it would hover at a few clicks of throttle.
Now I'm just waiting on the new kit to arrive and get going again!
Later,
Dave Shulman

Looks great Buzz!!
Are there any other pics or videos that anyone has of their 2x2? It's still 7-weeks until mine arrives.

If you go to www.composite-arf.co.uk and click on build threads you can see the build of my DA-50 powered "Prototype" scheme 2x2!!
Hope it helps get you through those 7 weeks!!

Thanks Mark,
Thats a great help. My plane and engine are now only a week away, but we have just had a first baby so no doubt there will be some delay in the commencement of building.
Thats a nice website.
Cheers

RE: Extra 2X2
For what it's worth for folk building an electric 2x2.
I've had an issue with TP 6000 packs that actually caught fire in the model whilst in use. I've recently taken delivery of some new Flight Power - 6450mAh 5S3P F3A Pro Short packs. I managed to get out and fly last night and initial impressions are very good. Flew for around 8 minutes on the first flight with no noticable drop in performance. Packs were reasonably warm after a routine consisting of vertical climb-out, large loops, plenty of fast knife edge passes, knife edge harrier, some snap rolls. Didn't want to go too mad on first flight with brand new packs.
Two packs combine to make for a very compact installation. They can actually be installed with the length of the battery installed across the width of the fuselage and they are wide enough that they fit with space to spare between the two main formers. This makes installation really easy, just suspending the two packs underneath the two graphite tubes with elastic, just using the spare piece of composite board between the packs and the tubes to spread the mass more evenly. This really helps to get the C of G a little further forward as the entire pack sits in front of the rear former. An ideal pack for this model.

Nice thread. Are you going to finish it with final details? I am interested in your final cg location. Also, I note that your engine has not been updated by DA. When they update it, the carb is rotated so the throttle is located on the other side. At least mine was.

Is it a performance 'update' of some sort? Can't see how?
As for the thread, yeah, I want to try and include the CofG, throws, mixes etc etc

RE: Extra 2X2
No first hand experience of this set up, but the DA-50 really is at the absolute top end of the power to weight ratio range for this model.
Anything around 40cc - 45cc is going to be superb.

Mark
