Hi VJ. That is one nice fuselage! Can you explain how you did the panel lines? I’m assuming you are modeling overlapping panels and the tape is on the underneath panel. But how do you handle the other end? Can you tape the whole plane and then spray the primer for panel lines?
Sorry SDP. I go all out for a double post.

out2pasture, the overlapping seams arereplicated with the tape as you stated. One of the drawbacks of using this method is that all of the seams can't be done in one shot, unlike using panel tape which can all be done in one application. Wasn't a big deal though, just mask off the areas that you don't want overspray to get on. When spraying you are concentrating the paint at the taped seam tying to fill the gap. I reduced the fan pattern on my gun to better focus the spray pattern at the seam. After letting the paint dry I lightly sanded the top of the tape before removing the tape from the fuse. Some minor sanding/blending may have to be done before taping off your next panel. I did my entire fuse in two applications. I was very happy with the results from only using one thickness of tape, the edge was very pronounced and should show well when paint is applied.

I would love to Gary but I don't want to risk knocking off any of my rivets until the paint is on, not to mention the coldtemperature causing things to contract.

Tom a good airbrush is on my list of things that I have to buy. It would have been a perfect application for it.
Today my tapes arrived from Pink-it, however my rib stitches did not come in yet. This was definitly poor planning on my part as I should have ordered them well in advance. I covered the rudder today and put a few more rivets in place. I am excited to put some color on this plane....
When the rib stitching arrives I will be sure to document the installation of the stitches and tapes for those of you that are not familiar with these products.

Vinny,
Good to see you out at the field today.
Whilst the crowd awaits the arrival of your stitching, I thought I'd throw a quick question out there. When it comes to installing the Robart hinges, is it preferable to epoxy them to the fixed side first, e.g. the stabilizer or fin, or the control surface first ? I was thinking it may be easier to get the hinges aligned to the control surfaces as they are more easily blocked up in a suitable orientation, but would appreciate any insight you all may have.
Good to see you too Tim!
In reference to your hinging question, for me I let the circumstance dictate which side I do first, however mosttimes I epoxy the contol side first. In some casesIhave evenepoxied both sides at once. Many are not comfortable doing both sides atonce , but with 30 minuteepoxy I never had an issue with time.
When epoxing the control side first, I lay the rudder/elevator flat on my work table with the hinge side on the tables edge soI can get the hinges intoposition by using a square to verify that the hingesare in proper alignment. As an example of letting the circumstance dictate, for my Ryan since the rudder/elevators are not flat I will not install the hinges on the table but rather to ensure proper alignment I will do it to the fin/ stab all at the same time. Hope this helps...

Ok, good, laying the control surfaces flat and at the edge of the table was what I was envisioning. Thanks for the confirmation.
...my ailerons taper towards the wingtip, so maybe I'll take your lead and try to hinge both sides together w/ the 30 min epoxy. Elevators and rudder are flat so I'll probably lay them on the table. Again, thanks...

I know in the past, I have installed them on the control surface, then, WITHOUT epoxying the fixed side, just slide them in a little ways into the existing holes on the stab/rudder while they are turned 90 degrees to the control surface. It ensures proper alignment and allows you to glue only one side at a time, which I prefer to do simply so I can ensure no epoxy seeps into the hinge area itself. This method also ensures that the hinges themselves are on the same pivot axis, since if one hinge is glued deeper in the control surface than the one next to it, the pivot point can be off a bit. this eliminates that issue.

So I purchased the second Aribrush. This one has a larger needle / nozzle size and is much better at painting small items like landing gear etc. Both have their uses but I'll admit the cheaper Iwata Revolution I purchased second gets more use. Sure, no fancy case like the Kustom line, but a ziplock bag and plastic bin work fine for that!

I'll second the Iwata, nice airbrush. I also have the Eclipse and it works great for detail work. I also like it for spraying the edge of masking with the base color to prevent bleeding of the trim color. A real must when masking over panel lines, rivets and pinked tapes.
If you ever want to get into weathering effects the Iwata Eclipse excells in this work.
Later!!

So am I to understand that when spraying panel lines, you end up with an effect similar to a lapped (shingles on a roof) kind of effect? Its just building up paint on one side of the tape and tapering it off, right?
Thanks,

Gotcha, thanks Vincent. I can also see where it would be difficult to plan it out so everything goes on in the correct sequence to get the desired effect. Just trying to picture how you would make a square-panel effect (such as where you would have 4 panels comeing together at a single point) if that makes sense. I will have to play with that effect on some scrap stuff first.
thanks,

Hi Cliff , thanks for asking. I have been paitently waiting for my stitchs to arrive so work can resume. As soon as I receive them I will get back to the task of finishing this project. The lesson that we should learn here is to have your supplies on hand well in advance or even before you startyour nextproject so delays like this can be avoided. If this product from Scale Stiching wasn't so good I would make them myself, but they're worth the wait...
Weather here has been up and down, cold one day and resonably warm the next. We are expecting the possibility of a substantial snow storm for Friday. The only thing that would make me mad about not having to go to work on Friday would benot putting that time inon my Ryan! I can tell you this though my shop is pretty clean.
