I agree with Ken.
GumHead you really do build nice looking airplanes.
I wish you were close enough I could talk you into painting mine.
Ken, did you ever get the Slow Poke Bipe underway ?

Outstanding planes guys!!! This is my first build and I did a Hog Bipe. Should be ready by next week. Just started flying in Oct, and started building in DEC. Just can't figure out these guys that don't build. I've only been in the hobby for a few months, but I love to build my own stuff.

My first plane was a kit built Sig LT-40. Built a Sig Somethin' Extra right after that. Jones'n to get a Sig Hog on my building board.

If folks are intimidated by building, they should start a thread on the beginner area. Lotta folks to help over there. I know for a fact that my finished planes were better due to folk's help on this message board.

It really has been a fun build. Much less stress than the Corsair, but then again, I am not concerned with scale accuracies like I am on the Corsair. The Hog bipe will be one of my fun planes, and not taken seriously. heck, I have handed over the color sceme decisions to my 7 year old nephew. I don't know what he has chosen yet, but I am sure it will be VERY colorfull. The last drawing I saw had every part a different color.

Gumhead, looks great. What did you cover with before painting? That looks easier and better than cutting covering for designs and stripes.

Thanks chashint,
I really appreciate that. I have had some help, but I've done most of it on my own. A friend of mine I work with has been building and flying for about 30 years. He just told me to really enjoy the hobby you really needed to build. He just asked me to the field one day he was going flying. The rest is as they say downhill. A few days later I went over to see his "hangar" of aircraft. He just happened to be almost finished with a Hog Bipe. So, I went to the hobby store and ordered one. I really appreciate all the great people in the R/C world for all the encouragement and help along the way. You guys are great.

Great looking plane Bipeluver. If yours flies anything like mine you'll love it. Unfortunately a bad, new computer radio cut her loose into the woods after about 7 flights. A new one came in the mail today so I hope to start on it soon. Just finished an Astro Hog and as soon as the radio situation is resolved it'll be in the air. Yes, there are some great people in this hobby and many, many sharing helpful ones online. Just ask a question and you'll get at least three ways to handle something, all of them good!
Cubfloater "Jim", hoping to soon be astro hog flyin and hog bipe building in NC.

I tried to check the balance of my plane with the Great Planes CG machine and the landing gear hits the support rods.
Other than the finger method how do you do it ?

I don't know how some of you guys manage to build planes that weigh so little.
My Hog Bipe is ready to be covered.
The engine and flight pack are installed for pictures and CG check.
Being curious how much Koverall and dope will add to the all up weight I hung it on the fish scale and it is 7lbs 15oz.
It may hit 8 1/2lbs flying weight by the time it is covered and painted.
I have seen many posts stating ready to fly weight at 7 1/2 lbs, I just don't see how you can do it without major material substitution.
I resisted the urge to beef up anything with the exception of some triangle stock at the gear mount plate and I went easy on the epoxy this time.
Maybe I will switch back to the aluminum landing gear since the Dubro weighs more but even then I am still well above many people's flying weight.

Chashint, Mine was 7 lbs exactly. Saito 72, standard futaba gear, fiberglass gear and the only other thing was that as I was building and reading the earlier posts of this thread lots of guys were complaining about their planes being tail heavy and having to add nose weight so I sanded the tail really good. And I use lots of glue on everything. I just finished an astro hog and it balanced without weight too but it seems really heavy and I haven't weighed it yet. Of course I'm sure it won't matter with that big wing. Once I clean up my shop I'm putting another Hog Bipe on the board to replace mine that I lost.

Sig tends to put a lot of heavy balsa in there kits but a 8 1/2 lbs Hog Bipe will be fine, It can handle the weight with the 2 wings, I think mine came out around 8 1/2 lbs and it flies great so use the new landing gear because alum. gear always seems to get bent on the not so perfect landing (for me any way)

The wings are covered and I am almost finished with the nitrate dope.
I thought the fuselage was ready to cover but there was so much hanger rash on it I had to get the wood putty out again so it is still bare wood right now.

How many people are flying their Hog Bipes without any right thrust ?
I have poured over the Hog Bipe threads and found some references but nothing that I really consider factual.

Well I finally finished painting the top wing...
Its still cold in the shop, hopefully things will start to move a little faster with some warm weather.
Next is to tape off and paint the body.
Heres a couple of pics...
