RE: balsa usa phaeton 90
I added ailerons to the uppers this way
At the trailing edge I sliced the lower ribs to allow a piece of flat stock underneath. I sliced in the upper trailing edge for a length of triangular stock (normally used for the T.E. for a flat-bottomed wing). I shortened the ribs just enough that they butted up nicely to a pre-formed solid aileron stock. The uppers are slaved to the lowers with trailing edge rods so only the lower wing has aileron servos, but a beefy one (69 oz in) on either side. I also thined the entire airfoil of the upper wing based on talking to a BUSA90 pilot who did it (following the attached article he passed along to me).

RE: balsa usa phaeton 90
Hey guys, I need some help. It seems after I put my Phaeton away two years ago that I misplaced the build directions. If someone could make me a copy I would be glad to cover the reasonable cost. If someone is able to send me a PM and let me know.
Thanks Alan

RE: balsa usa phaeton 90
Thanks so much Charlie,
The article explained what I had been thinking of doing and now I feel confident that it is really the way to go. I will make copies (ply) or more properly, templates of the lower ribs and match the larger uppers with the lower ribs, easy. I like to scratch build so it's the same thing as cutting a new rib but I already have the balsa. This plane is very much like a Lazy Ace I had and foolishly let some one fly once...............
I have flown a stock 90 and they are almost the same as the Lazy Ace, sluggish, and prone to one speed no matter the power but a really nice plane overall, especially on ski's. I do plan on a little bashing to possibly include a round cowel and different tail profile that is less square looking? I am using a TT 91 FS and will mount to balance w/o extra nose weight, a problem with these short nosed planes, at least from my experiance. Overall weight will be watched as closley as possible.
Thanks again, Ask and you shall receive!!!!!!!!!

Are you using Post Reply? I dont think you do images in Fast Reply.
Well cr@p!! My Phaeton 90 expiration date was yesterday. I noticed a little problem when I rolled inverted early in the second flight of the day. The plane would slowly loose altitude and it took quite a bit of elevator to level it off, which was unusual. So I rolled upright. Tried it again on the next pass and things seemed allright. Later in the flight I rolled inverted again (I kinda do that alot) and it did the same thing as earlier. Only this time I couldnt level off, it had a slight down incline. Then 2 seconds later it drove itself into the ground like it was commanded or servo went to the end of it stop, hard and inverted. Took me 5 minutes of pulling to get the engine out of the ground. The saito 120 has some superficial damage, bent pushrod tubes and broken high speed needle valve and spraybar. Theres no repairing the plane. Everything from the head rest forward is destroyed and the rest of the fuse is split to the tail. It tried to tell me there was a problem, I just didnt listen.
Too bad, it was a great flying plane. Lasted about 6 years and lots and lots of flights. The buds in the pit just rolled the garbage can out to me to bring the plane back. <g>

Oh well, NEXT!!!

(edit)- The only to get over a crash is to maiden another plane. Gonna go do my new zero sunday.

I have a NIB P90 kit w/some aftermarket accessories (FG cowl, Sig ABS pants, TNT alum gear) that I'm looking to sell if anyone's interested. I've moved on (back?) to old timers and gliders. Let me know and I'll post an ad on Market Place.

Thanks cubdriver, but I have the plans and will scratch out the next. Got some ideas I want to try. The main one being, adding about +1deg incedence to the stab. I've got two 1/4 scale cubs and a TF giant P-47 to finish building before I take on any new projects. The zero flew today. Very sucessful flight. Stalls straight ahead, and very predictable on the landing descent. Had a small issue with a retract mount but a quick fix. A good plane.
Yes, I did get the big Sig Sun Dancer at the swapmeet. Today, Robin flew behind the cedar tree line and split his ugly stick into 5 big pieces. So I have some competition for utltimate dumb thumb. I think I'll be railroaded at the meeting next week. They all watched while I practically dug the engine out of that hole in the ground. Never did find the pilot. MIA!

[8D]Whatwind, nice finishing work. I have one question regarding the bracing that
you added to the stock landing gear. At first glance, it looks like the bracing will
result with the gear having no play at all. Am I right or wrong?? I am just
finishing up my Phaeton 90 and want to strengthen the gear, also, but I would
like some play in it, not total rigidity. What's your opinion?? Thanks.

RE: balsa usa phaeton 90
after reading your post I went out and did a drop test on it the cross rods came out of the joint after the repair I tried agan same thing happened. I afraid I made it to rigid so you were right I had a fiberglass landing gear in my spare parts it's the same width and only 1/2 inch shorter anyway the best laid plans. Did you go ahead and thin your top wing down? I was hoping to post pic of a finished plane but the landing gear debockel and runing out of clear coat . I was having a real hard time tuning the engine when I realized I had another 120 that was broke in and had been sitting in it's for 2 years put it on runs great . I guess I'll have to break the outher one in on a test stand. On the landing gear I guess you would have to put a spring from ont side to the other.
FINNISHING LIST.
clear coat wings
install remote glow connection
hook top and bottom ails together.
FLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[8D]For the landing gear, one option that I'm considering is soldering an inverted v shaped (^) piano wire brace
between the two main gears. This would give the main gear a little more rigidity and also some play.
What do you mean by "thinning the top wing down" ??

RE: balsa usa phaeton 90
thats the way my birdi big bee is done only with rubberbands to attached to the fuse at the top of the ^ to act as a spring. sorry it was Charlie P who posted the article. start at the top of this page and you will find it. no I did not do it to mine. AA5BY the blue and white one on page two looks like he added a leading set to the stock ones.

RE: balsa usa phaeton 90
I had a 3.5 lb gas weed whacker conversion on my Phaeton 90 hence why it was a must to beef the landing gear. The stock struts were used with the addition of a spreader wire. The wire was constructed of 1/16 stainless aircraft cable using wire crimps. Two pieces are sized and made up with loops on the ends with one end having a slightly larger loop. The larger loop goes over the axle and then the wire is run over the soldered joint of the two struts giving the wire reasonable ground clearance. The two smaller loops are joined in the middle by a small stiff spring from Lowes Building Suppy. A piece of heat shrink over the spring and cable clamps provides a reasonable appearance.
btw... I was going to fly the Phaeton last Sunday and the conversion engine wouldn't start. Test show the magneto CDI ignition has cratered. I've been flying the plane with the conversion for about a year and a half on the $12 (carb kit) motor. I doubt I could find another ignition considering I don't even know what model of motor it is. I'd have to go battery ignition and I don't know if the motor is worth that effort or cost. The motor produces 7,400 max rpm on a MAS 16-6 prop in comparison to a Zenoah G-20 that is lighter and will produce 9,000 on a APC 16-6. The conversion yields realistic performance only... and I believe the Phaeton would provide a little more fun with a bit more go.
I'm leaning towards the G-20. Either way should allow fitting the cowl, not doable with the flywheel ignition.

I havent tried one yet, but there is a thread on it here on rcu,

Initial reports a fairly positive.

RE: balsa usa phaeton 90
Edwin, Thanks for the heads up on the ignition. Looks like a reasonable way to go. I made the decision to repower with a Zenoah G-20 to increase performance and reduce weight.
