Friends,
many diesel fuels have been proposed and discussed in this site. Material is so abundant and disperse to be difficult to find, so, why not to collect and share those experiences in a short form?
Here I propose a simple form to report. Copy it and insert the report of a particular MIX you propose and have tested.
Everyone can add his experience and/or comments with a few words simply by using the proper spaces.
Thanks
Ugo

Here is my "Baker Black Brew mix" or bunker fuel oil mix
:
Late summer 2006 - present,
80% pump diesel.
18% Chevron Dello 400 diesel crank case oil (Used, out of my Cummins powered truck)
2% Amsoil cetane booster
This is mixed 5 parts to one part of Davis plane diesel giving about 6% ether. That is 6 gallons of Baker Black Brew for every 1 gallon of Davis used.
I have flown 7 - 8 gallons in my OS 40 LA with a Davis head and a 12 x 6 MAS. It hand starts but needs choking till warm. It gives about 3 minuets of flight time per oz. on a Big Stick .40. It idles very nicely.
I have also flown it on a .061 paw but it is hard to start without a starter.
I have also flown it without any Davis fuel as an etherless mix but it needs warm weather and is hard to start.
Thanks goes to Andy Woitowicz for his inspiration and the the cetane booster idea!
Treven Baker.

Sorry I didn't coppy your fomat. I just put it as simple as possible - to me - the way I mix it.
I never really figured out exactly what it is after the 5 to 1 mix with the Davis but the Amsiol cetane booster won't be 2% any more unless that is what Davis is using. Thanks for putting up the correction. That looks about right exept we don't really know the ignition improver he uses.
5 to 1 should come out to 1/6 Davis right?
As soon as I run out of Davis I will try adding 1 can of John Dere ether and then it will be really simple.
Treven.

The formula we used was very simple. Amsoil saber 2% and jp-8 fuel.
The engine modification we made was to replace the carb and inlet on the OS.91FS with a set from an OS.52OS. All that is required is to enlarge the mounting bolt holes, I do not remember the # drill I used, just large enough to allow the stock bolts to be used. Do yourself a favor and use the gasket here. We also removed the head shim and lapped the head to the cylinder. I use toothpaste.
For starting we used an inline tank with 50:1 regular gas and Amsoil Saber. This allowed the combustion area to become warm enough to sustain ignition.
Wee also have a C&H Ignition installed and used either a NGK or a Rimfire spark plug. I found no differance in performance or lonjevity between the plugs.
Once fully warmed up there was no noticable smoke coming from the exhaust at any throttle position. I have in fact held a white piece of cloth directly behind the muffler, but not touching and only had a lite brown/ tan bit of residue after 15-20 seconds.
Transition is responsive once the needles have been dialed in.
After long periods, 15+ minutes, of 2-3,000 opperation there is some coughing untill the engine reaches full rpm. While observing this transition in the dark I noticed red sparks fly out the exhaust. We determined the plug was fowling with carbon as well as arround the exhaust valve.
I am still working on developing a spark ignited diesel. By using a spark ignition there is a slight weight penalty and a power drain. I feel as these are easly offset by the ease of use and the engine will last much longer without raising the compression beyond the design limits of the engine.
I have over 100 hours on th OS, less with the Saito ( A bushed rod in the Saito would help dramatically).
As you can tell we were not flying standard RC aircraft. The plane is a SilverFox made by Advanced Ceramics Research.
Since the time of the OS ACR has gone to the Honda GX25 with many conversions and come up with a very user friendly and reliable engine. One of the major problems with the OS is trying to teach people to tune a needle.
If you have any questions or coments you can contact me directly @ [email protected]
Please do not send pictures as I have dial up and very little patience.

MIX NUMBER: 03.................SUGGESTED NAME: SLOPER's 10% Ether Mix .
.DATE: 01/04/07
ORIGINAL REPORTER: SLOPE- SOARER..
ADDITIONAL USERS:............................................ ..
FORMULA to make 1 litre of fuel with 10% ether content
2.5% ignition improver..... main ingredient 2-ethylexhyl nitrate (direct replacement for IPN)
12.5% semi synthetic engine oil for diesel car use.
16% of modified olive oil
10% ether
8% castor oil
kerosene (paraffin) to make total up to 1 litre
Method to make 1 litre.
Take 1/3 litre of commercial model diesel fuel with 30% ether content and 24% castor oil content.
Add to the 1/3 litre the following quantities...
25mls ignition improver
125mls synthetic engine oil
160mls of the modified olive oil
357mls of kerosene (paraffin)
You will now have 1 litre of the fuel which has a total kerosene content of approx 51 %. The 1/3 litre of commercial mix already contained some kerosene which gives the total kerosene content of 51% in the litre of fuel.
The castor oil is only in the mix because I dilute commercial fuel which already contains it, I haven't found a source for ether yet so have to rely on diluting the comercial fuel mixes to give me
an ether content.
ENGINES
1)PAW.2.49..CARBURETOR: RC /fixed.. RUN TIME: ...........STARTING: electric.
USER:slope-soarer
Comments:used in 5-25°C range. worked well. 20' running times. throttle very good
2)PAW.1.49.CARBURETOR:RC/ fixed...RUN TIME: ...........STARTING: electric
USER:slope soarer
Comments:used in 5-25°C range. worked well. The mix was tested in engines with fixed venturi as well as engines with RC carbs. Idle was very slow and steady. Throttle response was very good. After 4 minutes at a low idle the engines with RC carbs would repond smoothly to quick throttle opening without any "hiccups" The oil content is high but the mix works very well, perhaps due to the high oil content compression seal is improved ?
A PAW 1.49 with fixed venturi ran for some 23 minutes on a 2 ounce tank of this mix, the engine was set up for maximum revs and was attached to a 100 inch wingspan glider.
The mix has been extensively tested and my PAW diesels show no signs of distress or high temperatures when using it.
Other mixes using increased amounts of the synthetic engine oil without any modified olive oil, and also increased amounts of modified olive oil without any synthetic oil were tried. These mixes ran O.K but were not quite as good as when both olive oil and synthetic oil were incorporated in the mix. No doubt the ether and oil content of the 10% ether mix could be reduced, but as it stands this mix runs extremely well and has the benefit of being a lot cheaper than a normal high ether content fuel.
My engines start easily and quickly with just a "choke" prime and a spin of the starter motor. Compression is about half a turn LESS than when using mormal model diesel engine fuels.

OCTYL NITRATE cetane enhacer, such as AMSOIL may be difficult to find in europe, at least in pure form. Most brands sell it extremely diluted with kerosene, so its real price skyrockets. Here an useful way to have it by post in pure form and neat price.
Go to http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/products.html and you will find this
-Veggi-Boost combustion enhancer is available in 500ml cans for people to create their own specialty fuel. It is essential to anybody using vegetable oil as a diesel fuel and will improve performance and help protect both the engine and the environment. Veggi-boost is a cetane improver and is added at about 0.1 % volume. Just a tiny amount has a large effect. It contains nearly 100% 2-ethyl hexyl nitrate which aids detonation inside the engine combustion chamber, enabling vegetable oil to be used more readily in a diesel engine. Also great if you're thinning veg oil down with petrol - it will restore the cetane value of the blend-
CHEVRON says.
Cetane Number Improvers (Diesel Ignition Improvers) Cetane number improvers can reduce combustion noise and smoke. The magnitude of the benefit varies among engine designs and operating modes, ranging from no effect to readily perceptible improvement
2-Ethylhexyl nitrate (EHN) is the most widely used cetane number improver. It is sometimes also called octyl nitrate. EHN is thermally unstable and decomposes rapidly at the high temperatures in the combustion chamber. The products of decomposition help initiate fuel combustion and, thus, shorten the ignition delay period from that of the fuel without the additive.
The increase in cetane number from a given concentration of EHN varies from one fuel to another. It is greater for a fuel whose natural cetane number is already relatively high. The incremental increase gets smaller as more EHN is added, so there is little benefit to exceeding a certain concentration. EHN typically is used in the concentration range of 0.05% mass to 0.4% mass and may yield a 3 to 8 cetane number benefit

I am ordering a davis head for my TT pro 46 tomorrow. I am planning on running a blend like this
10 to 15% X brand cheap starting fluid 2% amsoil cetane boster 30% motor oil? and the rest kerosene.
I may leave out the amsoil.
Now the question is what types of motor oil will work well and blend with kerosene with out ether? I am planning on using like 10W 30 or 40 X brand cheap motor oil.
Will morgan cool power oil blend with kero and on ether? This will be similar to Baker Black Brew.
Thanks,
Grant

Motoroil will mix with kerosene, they are from same raw oil product.

Best thing is to start with commercial fuel... Diesels are hard enought to get running right with that. The only reason I can run my Baker Black Brew is because I'm super sensative to everything from alot of hard knocks expirence.
I can hand start my OS .40 on BBB but it is very trickey to do but I do it because I know just what to do. It is always just on the edge of hydrostatic lock while warming up - very easy to damage the engine.

Grant,
If your ordering a head from Davis get a quart or 2 of the recomended fuel from him as well. As chevy say's diesels have a learning curve that is much easier with good known fuel, once you can start your motor easily and adjust it then you can try mixing your own brew. Not mentioned in this thread is the availability of ether, easiest to find is John Deer starting fluid- its 80% Ether and the remaining 20% you can count as kerosine/parafin in your mix. as to oil , castor or a straight50-70wt motor oil is best in a diesel . Further to useing motor oils either mineral or synthetic, the results vary from oil to oil due to some of there aditives suppressing combustion.
Al;so dont overprime your motor , diesels are very difficult to start when flooded and the risk of hydraulic lock causeing damage increases.

Chevy43 and Stewart, Very well put I think the idea of powering planes is to go out and have fun flying whether glow , gas, diesel. and now electrics there too. If you just look at the
diesel engines, conversions, you have of course, PAW 2 generations of Burfords, Davis,Clutton, MVVS. and assorted other makers in Europe , the bottom line if you add this up it is in
excess of 200 years of experince and they all sell or recommend ether based fuel. for the "new guy on the blocK' the basic diesel idea is running a variety of prop sizes by just adjusting the compression and needle no glow plugs, batteries just flip and go and of course a long way on little fuel, quieter some of you out there can of course, machine ,make heads, modify engines but this not the average modeler If you follow the directions ( and a lot of folks do not) learning curve is simple. Some months ago I had davis ribbing me that I have forgotten how to run a glow engine, I have had glows quit in flight NEVER a diesel , One of my little cubs had an OS26 4stk neat littlle engine, quiet easy starter but after
some dead sticks, fiddled with, plugs tank height fuel replaced it with my MVVS 15 diesel and no more issues .
PAWs and Davis conversions are a great way to start for the new diesel modleler , and the chances of the glow owner are quite good that he has an engine that an be converted with a diesel head for 30 to 60$ he is there more or less, and yes a PAW great idea for a simple easy classic too martin

The paw 06 is very easy for me to adjust. it really came natural to me. I am an engine fanatic and I’ve had a lot of experience with different engines. I rebuilt a ford 289 V8 with a ford manual and installed a high lift cam and 351 heads when I was 16. it turned out to be a great engine. Drag raced it a little and sold the car. What interested me the most was rebuilding the engine. I’ve changed out the bearings in mt saito 82 and 91. Both started right up after the rebuilt. Trouble shoot many bad running engines and got them purring.
I do know ether is a good thing in the fuel and i do plan on using it.
I will be using a starter on the 46. I guess it boils down to the point that I want to experiment with the fuel and cheap X brand starting fliud just to see what happens and save money if it works. I will run it on the old english mix 1st to get everything set close. I ordered the head today!
Thanks for the tips. i will get some good heavy motor oil for my fuel experiments.

Comments: Good starting, easy setting, dependable fuels mixed from John Deere starting ether, campstove kero, SIG AA Castor and AN from Clutton (in USA). John Deere starting ether claims to be 80% high quality technical ether (diethyl?), and blends volume-adjusted for that % do well, dependably.
Additional user observations:

Observation: The high vapor pressure of the ether fraction complicates use with uniflow type tank venting in CL flying -characterized by long (up to 7+ minutes) running full-bore at optimum setting - most recent experience indicates non-uniflow tank venting works better.
