Rob:

You may want to try what Mark suggested, but if still intermittently fails to light up, look inside the front cover, you'll most likely see that one tiny metallic spot on the wire. This has been a problem for some of the older K80s, but not all. The repair is quite simple, or I could send you an upgrade kit and you can DYI. The upgrade kit is $90 plus shipping.

Good Luck,
Barry

hey Guys,

I have a New K80 I bought couple days ago from a friend who bought it for a TBM shock Jet. He ended up buying a P60 for it because he didn't like the way the K80 was running. At first it looked like the thermocouple was going out. it would read 4 to 6 degrees when the ambient was around 30 something. so we boxed it up and was going to send it to a Dream Works representative in Panama to have it check. 4 days ago when he told me he wanted to sell it but wanted to fix it first i told him we should just give it another try. so we did and the Turbine is running great no more Temp fail on start up. this is my first turbine ever and I ordered a Shock Jet for it. I have little to none knowledge on turbines. We Started the turbine couple times, but when its doing the Ramp Up after it starts igniting on the kero fuel, it spits out a yellow flame until it gets closer to 40Krpm it stops. this is not excessive in my opinion but not normal compering it to some videos on youtube. I was going to try to record it and post it on youtube so you guys could see what I'm talking about, but when we decided to do that the Power Max can was empty[:@] but as soon as I get a full can Ill do it probably in 2 days or so. like I said when the turbine is running it does perfectly its just that Ramp Up flame that have us Puzzle. My friend witch is the previous owner thinks it is the Pump messing up. so please let me know what you guys think, the shock Jet is going to be here this week and want to get it flying ASAP,

Thanks!

Might try lowering the pump start point by 1 and see if that helps.

That's from the red glow wire underneath the multiplex connector rubbing against the casing, and the insulation or heat shrink wears out to expose a tiny spot of the actual wire or solder joint.

Rob,

Just remember the hotter the plug the more likely it will burn out, perhaps dial down glow setting for it to last a bit longer. For example, I have been using surplus Fox long medium-hot plugs, and I would dial it down to anywhere between 18 to 25 and still able to give me a good start.

Kenric:

A little flame spitting out like what you described during ramp up is very normal. Depends on ambient lighting and angle, sometimes flames don't show well on video. Next time, please keep a close attention on its temperature, if it doesn't spike over say 780 I would not worry about it at all.

Hey Todd sorry for that mistake about the representative I understood wrong, I stand corrected by Swasey about that, my bad!. getting back to the turbine we are awaiting a regulator valve, (i think he ordered it from you), so we can use the Colman's green propane bottles since its really easy to get around here, I also read some where on here that they are going to stop making the power max so we better just change to the Colman's green tanks from now on. As soon as we can get some gas to start it up again ill take a video and post it up so you can see what we are talking about.

Thanks!

I was able to get A few more flights on the F-86 this past weekend. I have been busy with school so flying has been curb to a point. The K-80 is working great and I still can't get over the push it has for the Sabre. I have approx 65 flights on her now.

JetPilot24,

Which Sabre are you flying your K80 in? I was looking at a Sabre as the new home for my K80.

It is a HP Jets From South Africa. I don't believe it is made any more but if you can Find A Trim F-86, I had one of those at one time, It is the same Jet and it flies so good. I went as far to install the speed brakes.

Hi,
did anyone tried operating the xicoy FADAC with 2cell A123 batteries?
although the manual states that the minimum voltage is 7.2V, i'm trying to avoid working with LiPo batteries.

On both my RAM turbines, there is no problem working it from a 6.6V supply (2s A123).

thanks.

As far as I understand from Gaspar on the JetsMunt's its the ancilleries that are the problem not the FADAC, Kero start will not work at that low a voltage and three cell is too much for the valves and starter motor, this may be the case with the KingTech.

well, if the FADAC will work with 6.6V, and the valves and starter have no problem with that voltage level, and there is no kerostart on this engine...
i guess it will work but will have to have a slight tweak to the parameters (mainly glow plug value).

Kingtech K-80e DIY Upgrade Kit

Kingtech are offering a very nice upgrade kit for the K-80e.
Parts are:
new front cover.
new internal PCB with data connector - this PCB have the hall sensor on it and a quick connection to the thermal probe
new wiring.

the upgrade kit combines both the RPM cable and thermal probe cable on a single, telephone like, cable with a pre-soldered connector that plugs into the xicoy FADAC.
the DIY process is very easy (as long as you know what you are doing), i converted my brad new K-80 like so:
1. remove the front cover by unscrewing the surrounding hex screws.
2. for better accessibility, de-solder the starter motor wiring so the front cover will come off completely.
3. remove the old hall sensor PCB by unscrewing the two hex screws.
4. bolt the new PCB into place, u need to use a shorter 3mm bolts for it, the original ones are too long.
5. the new front cover didnt had an appropriate hole for the thermocoupler wire, so i drilled a 4mm hole to the new front cover and used one of the rubber grommets that used to attached the old hall sensor PCB.
6. inset the thermocoupler wire into the hole through the grommet, shorten it to the appropriate length and connect it to the easy connector on the new PCB (red wire goes to the + marking).
7. close the new front cover (have a special cut to it for the connector) with all the surrounding hex screws.

thats it, the turbine is converted.
now there are only two lines running from the ECU to the turbine - one for the starter and glow plug, with MPX connector (the green one) and one for the RPM and thermal probe - a telephone like connector.
it saves the mess of two wires, it looks neater and easier to run the wires.

sorry for the low quality pictures, were taken with my lame-***** cellphone.

thanks to Lior "i3dm" Zahavi for the help.
