Well if ya want cheap ya could look on eBay for good cheap buggies I'm assuming you want a 1/8th scale which is a smart move because my first one was a 1/10th scale and it sucked. But anyways here is what i bought for my first 1/8th scale and it has taken a beating and still hasn't broke anything. Also the MACH .28 that comes on it is decent for a first time ride. If ya do decide to go with a rtr first thing first...... Replace servos and get a new radio either a 75 or the new great thing is the Spektrum System.

Cen matrix is a great RTR and comes with a great radio for the price, I have raced this car and I will say that it handles well out of the box. the engine isn't the best on the market but that is how the manufacturers are keeping RTR costs down, by using less expensive engines in the cars.
also the sportwerks turmoil rtr comes with a great radio and the mayhem is a great car that doesn't get the credit it deserves

Another Vote for the Matrix. All buggy does about the same top speed due to almost identical gearing, so handling is what counts. Matrix is definitley the best buggy in that category.. I shorten my lap time after switching to Matrix from my K car.

I'll say the Matrix, not the cheapest but its aimed more at racing where Mayhems (no the pro) and other buggies lean towards bashing.
I threw out the stock NX26 (unreliable IMO) and stuck a O.S Vspec in it, this thing is a rocket now and its got strong brakes and sharp handling as well.

If you get the cen matrix expect to replace a set of steering knuckles or two, the rear drive cups coming from the diff, the center drive cups, the bushings that fit into your hing pins and that piece of s**t engine. The buggy has great handling without a douibt but it doesn't last.
The mayhem is deffinatly the way to go if you want an RTR. Flawless radio (I race with the synthesised version), the servos are great for atleast a few months but they could use replacing, I race with the sportwerks .21 and the .26 that comes in the mayhem is no slower or less reliable and it has the most power for your money (its very closly matched to the RB S7). The parts quality is great and you can expect to run this buggy without replacing any worn out parts for quite a long time. The mayhem doesn't have the out of the box handling like the matrix but you can set it up to handle damn well like someone at our track did. It will just take some testing and tuning.

the best RTR bang for the buck, as stated is the RD Logics SHO. For a non RTR the Hyper 8 is a GREAT buggy for the money. (runs with the mugans and etc.)Loaded with pro parts, tremendous tunibilty and lighting accelaration ...I have one and love it. The only weal spot are the rear hub carriers but can be replace with Hyper 7's for 9 bucks.

cen matrix rtr has to be by far, the best package you can get. Very good electronics, and a buggy destined for the track.
If you really want to go cheap, duratrax raze. Its really a smartech vanguard though. We'll see how it holds up to the magazine critics.

My Matrix had a out of control Hyper 7 smash into it the other weekend, pretty much a full speed shunt (my car was stationary on the side of the track, not on the track), car suffered zero damage dispite getting launched 10 feet and landing on its roof (airfilter was ripped off, thankfully the impact stalled the motor), Hyper 7 had a broken suspension mount, broken front wishbone and a bent drive arm.
Get the Matrix ARR (cheaper than the Hyper 8) as the stock motor, while powerful is not really that competitive and boy it runs hot... I'm running a Thunder Tiger .21 pullstart in it, good bang for your buck.
My mate bought a Sho (RE: A rebadged Swift Pro) 2 months ago, not really sure what the fuss is about, the motor is only averege and while the car is built strong the handling is on the clumsy side, the shocks are not that great (tends to bounce a lot on the bumps even with soft setups) and while the company backs it up with full part support onlin e they charge a fortune to mail the bits to you.

I just bought a Smartech Vanguard Sports with the .21CXP motor and am still waiting on it to arrive. What is wrong with this car? From what I understand, it is a pretty good car and a good RTR deal for non-serious racers such as me, but the parts are hard to get. I am new at the nitro cars. Is there anything I can do to make this a more durable or better vehicle now that I have already bought it? I almost bought the Matrix, and after looking around quite a bit, I can see from some of the components and the radio and servos, why it costs more. Maybe I will bash this one for a while and then switch to that one. I just could not afford it right now, and didn't know what was good and what was not. Thanks guys

when going offroad you can't go cheap as the deamnds are too high for the cheap materials that are used on those buggies.. you may get away with the cheap onroads but you can't with offroad...Slightest jump will break something.

The turmoil and matrix are the best RTRs but not cheap.
The hyper 8 is the best value period.
But if your going cheap....and from the title you are otherwise you wouldn't have said it......The sho/swift is the best specced cheap buggy about
