doing good, pat.
i do not think i would ever want to hang all those draggy things under my wings. gotta have some effect of the flight profile.
and add in the installation of the hard points and getting the locations right...
way lotta work to do, and decisions to make.
will be neat looking, though.

The printed parts weigh 5.4 oz. Add another 1.6 oz for paint, wood mount blocks and glue and we are at 7 oz. Twelve of these would add 5.25 lbs to the model. I've seen how this thing absolutely floats in the air, so 5 more pounds and some extra drag should not hinder performance.
Yes, lots of work to get it done, and I will make a final decision once I get the model.
Below is the bottom section of the Skunkmodels 1/48 plastic kit. Shows me good locations for the hardpoints. I will attempt to use the ones circled.

might have interference from the aft wing spar with the 2 aft most locations on the wing.
and, all of this is why i chose the blue/red over white NASA scheme. no temptation to load out any ordnance...
and yeah, i know about the 2 seat v 1 seat difference.
too old to be going for every detail anymore.

civilian duty, nor ord attached, for the most part.

Yep, that is one of many pics I've downloaded recently. Not many to be had of the Ferris-Heater scheme (the striped one). And yes, that one was the 2-seater. Not sure what the paint looks like on the bottom of this model, but if the false canopy, refueling guides and vertical stab with shadow are not there, I will add them.

Its a beautiful set up and little to no mechanical "drag"
Might be worth the mod/upgrade to eliminate wearing the wood. Even a 3d printed "race" would be better than metal on wood. Other than that, its a very similar setup to skymaster kits.
I stumbled on y'alls thread by pure accident and started post one. Love the XL, had more payload than the Eagle E. Its upgraded engine and a clean wing, it would supercruise.
On the cockpit...perhaps Jiri at JPWarbirds could do up the analog panel that would be XL correct.
Pylons and resin bomb load as well, for those wanting to do so. Right up his alley.
Good to see a Cranked Arrow in RC.
Mike, if interested, theres another subject aircraft that might be up your team's alley.
Check out the xfv-12
You guys might be the ines who could figure out the rhrust assisted STOL ducting in the wings to work with an rc turbine..just don't miscalculate lije Pratt and Whitney did :-)
Its a beautiful bird, like the XL.
If you decide to do it, count me in for Kit 1. :-)

Can you post lot of pics of the inside before you start the build. l'd really like to see what was changed, especially the nose gear mount and vertical fin structure.
Thanks,

Gary,
Mike said it should be built in time to make the container they have going out next month. Then it's just waiting on the slow boat across, clearing customs, and shipping to Florida.
I plan to take tons of pics for the build, especially in the areas where you've had issues on V1 (nose gear mount, wing mount, etc.).

Hi all… finally had a window of good weather between the floods here and have had several successful and enjoyable flights with my XL. Wow… just wow… what a joy to own. It’s a machine that begs to be flown and has not let me down in any way (well, not the jet… but did have issues with my JM166… only minor, my fault, and all fixed now).
I have dialled in my control throws and mixes… still running with CG at 280mm aft of the fuse split on landing fuel and 290 full fuel (now with extra tank located right in front of my turbine after moving it back 30mm). Ailerons are 45mm up and 40mm down (measured inboard trailing edge… neutral pos just above the mould marks on the servo housing), elevators 65mm up and down (measured inboard trailing edge… neutral pos 4mm above the fuselage lower line closest to the elevators). Running Jeti Assist at standard jet setup… no extra gain and 30% expo on all surfaces. She is so locked in at both high and super low speed and turns on a dime (as you have seen from the examples flying over there). Landings are just ridiculously easy and fun.
I changed my wing servo plugs to one MPX6 plug for easy assembly at the field and find the whole process from pulling the fuselage out of my car popping the wheels down, fitting the wings to flight ready so streamline and fast… very easy to live with.
I have fitted a pilot and always fly with the AIM-9s on the tips. Just awesome…
zero issues with the undercarriage and brakes are sweet… all standard JP controllers on 7.4 lipo.
I have posted a few videos and photos of the undercarriage and other stuff on my F B page (so much more simple than trying to upload to these sites)… just search Jason Reid Yoda and you will find me.
Air Knight have completed all the mods and changes I (and others ) have recommended and are ready for full production of the v2 Pro PNP… see attached PDF (hopefully it loads haha)… you will see stuff on F B or it’s up on my Thread on RCGROUPS if it does not take it here.
obviously Mike will be able to supply you guys so no issues there… Hope to see many more of these wonderful machines flying soon. All the best and happy flying to you all.

I've spoken to the Air Knight people and they seem to want to provide a quality v2 XL, biggest issue is purchasing one from them directly is shipping cost. You would end up spending very close to the cost of the XL purchase price on just shipping alone to the US due to it comes in 2 boxes. I'd be interested in purchasing the newest version with a different scheme but not making a whole lot of sense right now due to shipping costs, but its a great flying jet, easy to fly and non event landings.

Hi Yoda, Thank you for sharing the technical infos. Have you try mixing the elevators with ailerons? I use 3 trim sets on Jeti - Clean, Smoke, and Odnance trim for different flight config.
right now the shipping boxes are in 3 boxes. This would include the freight a bit but I like the plywood crates. The Ocean freight of $450 is just the shipping, not counting the custom clearance and ground shipping, a range of $800-900 shipped is a better estimate for your project.

Hi Mike,
yes, I mix both aileron to elevators and elevators to aileron at 40% and I find both work very well for the full flight envelope… no need to change flight modes. I found the ail to elev mix cleaned up the roll with improvements in how straight she rolls around the nose (no corkscrew).
thanks for the info on the freight too.
All the best mate.

I've been using combined aileron and elevon mix from the start. It copies the full scale jet and I think it has less flight control drag than with separate ailerons and elevons, although I have no real way to measure it. See my post #207 and #212 above.
I have no idea where my current CG is. I've moved batteries around and settled on the current spot. It was nose heavy with all batteries in nose. With all the batteries behind the cockpit It flew really great but was hard to land because the nose would hang up and it did not want to descend on final. So now the ECU and one 4000 3S is behind the cockpit and the other 4000 3S is under the canopy.
I use 2 flight modes, gear up and gear down, which only increases gyro gain when gear is down for take off and landing. I rarely change rates since I can get everything I need at my low rate. Just keeps it simple for me. I don't remember the radio settings or deflection angles at low and high rates but bat turns and tail dragging landings are no problem.
Best,
Gary

F-16 XL flying again!

My F-16 XL flew great all weekend at the Jason Jordan Jet Jam at the Firetower RC Club in SC. The nose gear stayed in all weekend! I really like the XL. My new F-86 did well also.

love this beauty… smiles all round.
just to clarify, when talking about flight controls I am focussed only on elevators. I now have them separated from the ailerons, but retain a mix of ailerons to elevators for a crisp roll.
enjoy the vid…

Sorry guys, new content on RCGROUPS as I’m still finding this platform difficult. Most likely my fault. Some updates and photos for Pat… couple of minor issues to report.

PS great results at the meet👍
